If required fields, business rules, or the destination’s response cannot be verified, the workflow stops the write and routes the record for investigation instead of guessing or blindly retrying. In a Conta pilot, start in the documented sandbox and keep consequential actions such as sending invoices or posting transactions behind a human review boundary.
What “fail closed” means for accounting automation
In a fail-closed design, the default is no write. A record proceeds only when the workflow can establish that its input is well-formed, complete, internally consistent, authorized for the intended organization, and safe to process. This matters because a request can succeed technically while still creating the wrong customer, amount, currency, invoice, or bookkeeping entry.

Keep three outcomes distinct:
- Validation failure: the source record is missing information or violates a business rule. Do not call the accounting API; send it for correction or review.
- Transient service or infrastructure failure: the destination is unavailable or returns an error that may clear. Retry only when the failure is known to be transient, with controls against duplicate creation.
- Unverified or inconsistent result: the request appears to have completed, but the response or subsequent state does not establish the expected outcome. Stop further writes and investigate or reconcile.
That distinction prevents a common failure mode: treating every problem as retryable. Retrying invalid business data cannot fix it, and replaying a create request after an ambiguous response may produce duplicates.

Use n8n to coordinate the flow, but put explicit gates before every accounting write. A useful sequence is:
#1 Best Overall
- Receive the source record. An n8n Webhook can receive a request and process data as an API-like endpoint; see the Webhook node documentation. For other sources, begin with the relevant trigger or input node.
- Parse and validate the payload. Check the shape and types of fields, required identifiers, amount and currency rules, and any accounting-specific invariants. Reject missing, malformed, or inconsistent data before the API node.
- Normalize the accepted data. Convert source-specific names and formats into one internal representation so later nodes do not make assumptions about the original payload.
- Check authorization and duplicate conditions. Confirm the intended organization and any required account identifiers. Check whether the event or source record has already been processed before attempting a create.
- Write only after all gates pass. Keep the write node downstream of the validation and duplicate checks. Do not let an error branch or fallback path bypass them.
- Inspect the result. Check both the HTTP outcome and the response body for the expected identifiers and state. Where the API and business process allow, reconcile the returned result against the persisted record before treating the workflow as complete.
For implementation details specific to a particular Conta account or plan, confirm the endpoint and behavior in the current vendor documentation and account before building the write path.
How TypeScript can make the boundary safer
TypeScript helps express what validated data should look like, but its types do not prove that an external webhook or API response is valid at runtime. Treat incoming JSON as unknown, parse it at the boundary, and produce an explicit validation result. Only the validated domain representation should be accepted by functions that create accounting records.

type Validation<T> =
| { ok: true; value: T }
| { ok: false; issues: string[] };
async function createInvoice(input: ValidatedInvoice): Promise<CreateResult> {
// The write function accepts domain data only after runtime validation.
return accountingApi.createInvoice(input);
}
The names are illustrative: a real implementation still needs runtime checks for required fields, numeric ranges, currency handling, identifier formats, and business rules. Keep validation errors structured so the workflow can route them for correction without misclassifying them as network failures. Similarly, validate the destination response before interpreting it as a completed business operation.
How do I handle errors in an n8n accounting workflow?
n8n supports workflow-level error handling through an Error Trigger workflow. Assign the error workflow in the main workflow’s settings, start the handler with an Error Trigger, and use it to alert an operator or route execution details for investigation. n8n documents this approach in its error-handling guide.
Rank #3
Error handling should preserve enough context to diagnose the failure: a safe reference to the source record, the stage that failed, the error category, and any destination request or response identifiers that can be retained without exposing secrets or unnecessary sensitive data. Use n8n execution history to inspect failed runs. Do not assume the Error Trigger catches a response that is technically successful but wrong in business terms; explicit assertions and reconciliation checks must raise that condition themselves.
Route failures by what can resolve them
- Bad or incomplete business data: hold the record and request correction. Do not retry unchanged input.
- Potentially transient transport or service error: retry selectively and safely. For create operations, use an idempotency mechanism if the API supports one, or maintain a durable processed-record key and check it before replay.
- Ambiguous completion: do not immediately resend. First determine whether the destination created the record; reconcile using available identifiers or send the item for human review.
Can I test the Conta API without changing live accounting data?
The reviewed Conta API guide describes both production and sandbox API gateways and says the free sandbox is intended for testing. It also says sandbox email and EHF invoices cannot be sent. Sandbox testing therefore helps exercise request construction and workflow logic, but it does not demonstrate that those delivery actions work in production.
Rank #4
The guide states that API access requires an active subscription, that API keys inherit the access level of the user who created them, and that most routes require an organization ID. It also describes registration and support-assisted email verification for access to the free sandbox. Before a pilot, verify the current requirements, account permissions, available endpoints, and intended organization in Conta’s API guide and the current Swagger specification. Avoid placing production credentials in a test workflow.

What should a Conta pilot write—and what should it leave for review?
Conta’s guide describes creating invoice drafts that can later be reviewed and sent from the web interface. It also says Conta Regnskap users can create bookkeeping transactions through an advanced transactions API. Those capabilities support a conservative pilot boundary: automate validated draft creation first, then let a person review before sending or posting. The appropriate boundary depends on the account, plan, permissions, and current API behavior.

Do not assume that “Conta” identifies a single product in every context. The API guide cited here is for Norway’s web-based Conta accounting service. Conta Azul is a separate product; a community n8n node for Conta Azul is not evidence of official support for Norway’s Conta or proof that the products share endpoints, authentication, or behavior. Confirm the exact vendor and jurisdiction before choosing credentials, nodes, or API documentation.
Quick Recap
What to verify before enabling live writes
- The source payload is parsed at runtime and rejected on missing or inconsistent required data.
- Amount, currency, identifiers, and accounting-specific invariants have explicit rules.
- Only validated domain values can reach write operations, and no fallback branch bypasses the checks.
- Duplicate detection and safe replay behavior are defined for each create operation.
- HTTP status and response content are both checked; ambiguous outcomes stop the workflow.
- Error handling distinguishes correctable data problems from retryable service failures and alerts on unresolved cases.
- Sandbox limitations, API-key scope, organization access, subscription requirements, and account-plan permissions have been checked for the actual Conta service being piloted.
- Live sending or posting remains disabled until draft behavior, reconciliation, and human review are working as intended.
