Fail a GitHub Actions Job When a Vendor Page Changes

A scheduled workflow can fail when a vendor page changes by comparing selected page content with an accepted baseline and exiting nonzero on a difference.

Use a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow to fetch the vendor page, compare the relevant content with an accepted baseline, and exit nonzero when it differs. The nonzero exit makes the comparison step fail—and, unless failure is explicitly allowed, makes the job fail too. The key design choice is what content to compare: a whole HTML document can change for reasons that do not matter, so prefer a stable section or a deliberate normalization when the page warrants it.

Build the check around a baseline

A reliable check has four parts: a schedule, a fetch that reports request errors, a comparison against expected content, and a nonzero exit when the comparison detects a difference. GitHub does not prescribe how to fetch or interpret a particular vendor page; the right extraction depends on the page and on what change you care about.

  1. Schedule the workflow. Add a schedule trigger using POSIX cron syntax. GitHub schedules use UTC by default unless a time zone is specified, and the documented shortest interval is once every five minutes. Scheduled workflows run against the latest commit on the repository’s default branch. See GitHub’s workflow syntax for scheduled workflows.
  2. Fetch the page. Retrieve the URL and make the retrieval step fail clearly if the request cannot be completed. If the page requires authentication, provide credentials through supported secret contexts rather than embedding them in command text or logs. The exact fetch method depends on whether the page is public and whether it requires browser rendering.
  3. Choose and compare the content. Extract the section that matters, or normalize known dynamic fields, then compare it with a baseline stored in the repository or another deliberate location. A whole-page HTML comparison is simple, but may report unrelated changes such as timestamps, rotating content, or markup edits.
  4. Fail on a difference. Have the comparison command or script exit with a nonzero status when the selected content differs. GitHub uses the exit code from a shell run step to determine whether it succeeds or fails. Leave continue-on-error unset on this step if the detected change should fail the job. See the step-level continue-on-error setting.

Decide how the baseline is updated before relying on the alert. When a change is reviewed and accepted, update the expected content or digest in a controlled commit or approved storage location. That gives the team a reviewable record of what changed and when it became the new expectation.

Choose what counts as a change

The check should detect the change you care about, not every byte that happens to differ. Inspect the page and select an approach based on its behavior:

  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
  • Compare a stable section when only a particular specification, policy, or announcement matters. This can avoid unrelated navigation and layout edits.
  • Normalize known dynamic content when fields such as timestamps or rotating elements change routinely but are not part of the signal you want.
  • Consider page-provided validators or structured data if the vendor exposes them and they cover the change of interest. Their availability and suitability are specific to the page.
  • Use browser rendering only if needed. If the relevant content is created by client-side JavaScript, a plain HTTP fetch may not contain it. Whether rendering or authentication is required cannot be determined without examining the target page.

Before scheduling the workflow, test the extraction against the current page and a known changed example if you have one. A comparison that is too broad creates noisy failures; one that is too narrow can miss the change that matters.

Account for schedule delays

GitHub documents that scheduled runs can be delayed during periods of high Actions load, especially near the start of an hour, and that some queued jobs may be dropped. Choose a minute away from the top of the hour where practical, but do not treat a scheduled workflow as precise or guaranteed real-time monitoring. If detection must be timely or guaranteed, evaluate an event-driven or external monitoring design suited to how the vendor publishes updates. See GitHub’s scheduled-workflow troubleshooting guidance.

There are also repository-specific constraints: the schedule event runs only on the default branch, and GitHub automatically disables scheduled workflows in public repositories after 60 days without repository activity. See the schedule event documentation.

Surface failures and optional notifications

A failed run can be the alert: GitHub Actions notifications include the workflow run status, and users can configure notifications to receive only failed-run notifications. Delivery depends on each user’s notification settings. See GitHub Actions notification settings.

  • Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal

If you add a third-party action for notification or comparison, GitHub strongly recommends pinning the action to a version using a Git ref, SHA, or Docker tag. A shell-based fetch-and-compare design avoids an extra action dependency for the basic check, though it still requires you to maintain the script and its page-specific assumptions.
