When an assembler ignores a Set recipe signal in Factorio, the cause is usually one of five things: the signal is filtered out, another positive signal wins after red and green wires are added together, the recipe is not researched or compatible with that machine, ingredients are still sitting in the assembler’s input or trash slots, or a requester chest is being disabled separately. Use the checks below in order; each isolates one part of the circuit instead of guessing at combinator settings.

How Set recipe selection actually works
A crafting machine does not treat every circuit signal as a recipe command. Its Set recipe input applies filters and priorities before it changes the recipe. Understanding that order explains most apparent failures.

- Signals with a value of zero or less are ignored.
- Virtual signals, space-location signals, asteroid-chunk signals, and quality signals are ignored for recipe selection.
- The signal must represent a recipe the game has already researched and that the connected machine can craft.
A constant combinator displaying the right icon is therefore not sufficient by itself. Its value must be positive, the icon must be a supported recipe signal, and the technology must be available to that force.
Red and green wires are added together
Factorio sums signals carried by the red and green circuit networks. If a machine receives the same signal on both colors, or receives an extra positive signal from another combinator, that input is part of the machine’s final network state. A second combinator can therefore change the selected recipe even when the first combinator is configured correctly.

Machines can also expose circuit information such as the ingredients of their current recipe. A wire connected to another machine may consequently feed item signals back into the recipe-selection network. Treat every connected device as a possible source until you have isolated the input.
Priority is more specific than “pick the icon I intended”
The documented resolution order is:
- A positive signal for a researched, compatible recipe is considered first.
- If no direct recipe signal qualifies, item signals are considered.
- If no item signal resolves the recipe, entity signals are considered.
- Fluid signals are considered after those categories.
Within that process, the machine works from the complete, summed red-and-green network. An unintended positive signal can therefore produce a different valid recipe, while an unsupported or unresearched signal is discarded.

Perform these checks in order. Do not change several combinators at once; you want to know which condition corrected the machine.
1. Confirm the assembler control and recipe technology
- Open the assembling machine.
- Verify that its circuit option is set to Set recipe, rather than a mode that only enables or disables the machine.
- Check that the intended recipe’s technology has been researched by the force using the assembler.
- Confirm that the recipe belongs to the machine category and tier. A recipe that requires a different crafting machine cannot be selected here.
If the recipe was placed through an old blueprint or copied before research was completed, research the technology first and then set or paste the recipe again. Factorio staff member Rseding91 explained on 28 February 2019: “Thanks for the report however this is working as intended: you can’t set a recipe without having it researched. To set a recipe means to use it and to use any recipe means it should be researched otherwise it bypasses the entire research system.”
2. Reduce the network to one known signal
- Disconnect the red wire and observe the assembler.
- Reconnect red, disconnect green, and observe it again.
- If either color changes the result, trace that wire to every combinator, machine, belt, inserter, and power-switch connection.
- For a clean test, disconnect the existing network and attach one constant combinator that sends only the intended recipe signal at a positive value.
- Once the recipe changes correctly, reconnect devices one at a time until the unwanted input appears.
This test distinguishes a recipe problem from a network problem. If the single-combinator test works, the assembler is capable of accepting the recipe and the original fault is an additional signal or a wire topology issue.

3. Inspect value, icon, and signal class
- Set the intended signal to a positive integer. A value of zero or a negative value is ignored.
- Use the actual recipe signal when available, not a virtual signal that merely resembles the item.
- Remove space-location, asteroid-chunk, and quality signals from the test network; those classes do not participate in Set recipe selection.
- Check both the red and green columns in the circuit network monitor. A value visible on either wire contributes to the combined network.
Do not infer that a visible icon is active simply because it is displayed in a combinator. The assembler evaluates the signal class and value before it considers recipe compatibility.
4. Look for a valid signal that is winning instead
If the assembler selects a different recipe rather than showing no recipe, inspect all item, entity, and fluid icons on the network. A direct researched recipe signal has priority, but when no qualifying direct recipe signal remains, those fallback categories are resolved in their documented order. A positive signal from a second combinator can therefore select a legitimate recipe that you did not intend.
Temporarily remove every fallback icon and leave only one direct recipe signal. If the intended recipe then appears, reintroduce the item, entity, or fluid signals one group at a time. This reveals whether the conflict comes from a monitoring combinator, a memory cell, or a machine that is outputting its own contents.
5. Empty the assembler before changing recipes
Open the machine and remove materials from both its input inventory and its trash inventory. A recipe change can be blocked when leftover ingredients from the previous recipe remain in those slots. This is especially common when a recipe is switched while the assembler is partway through a craft or when an ingredient is no longer used by the new recipe.
Factorio developer boskid described the behavior on 18 December 2024: “That is not a bug. Reason why assembler circuit set recipe works that way is two-fold: first it solves issue of infinite trash storage where amount of trash would accumulate in the trash inventory every time a recipe is changed or cleared, and second is that it forces players to take a look and realize there are items to be taken out that need to be handled.”

After clearing both inventories, send the single known-good signal again. If the recipe changes only after removal, the circuit was functioning and the inventory-safety rule was the blocker.
Why a recipe flickers or changes to the wrong item
Flicker caused by competing updates
A recipe that alternates between two choices is usually seeing changing network values. Common sources include combinators whose outputs depend on chest contents, inserters that add or remove items, and a second wire color carrying a different state. Because the two wire colors are summed, a brief positive pulse can make another recipe qualify during one update and disappear on the next.
- Open the circuit network display while the flicker is occurring.
- Note which signal appears or changes at the same moment as the recipe.
- Disconnect the suspected branch, then repeat the test with only the constant combinator.
- Add the branch back with its condition disabled, and enable its conditions one at a time.
Use a stable positive value for the recipe signal during testing. Do not combine the recipe command with a condition signal until the machine holds the desired recipe reliably.
Wrong item caused by fallback signal priority
If the assembler consistently chooses a different item, inspect the network for item signals first, then entity and fluid signals. These categories are considered when a qualifying direct recipe signal is absent. Remove them rather than trying to compensate by making the desired icon visually prominent; the machine reads signal data, not the order in which icons appear in a combinator interface.

A signal can look correct while being unusable because it is a virtual, space-location, asteroid-chunk, or quality signal, or because its value is non-positive. Replace it with a positive, researched recipe signal that the assembler’s machine type supports.

Assembler recipe switching and leftover materials

Clearing the machine is not a workaround for a broken circuit. It is part of the assembler’s protection against silently accumulating materials that no longer belong to the active recipe.

A requester chest can make a working assembler appear broken because ingredient supply has its own conditions. Diagnose the chest after the assembler holds the intended recipe.
Check logistic coverage and requests
- Confirm that the chest is inside a functioning logistic network and that the required provider storage is available to that network.
- Open the requester configuration and verify that the requested ingredients match the current recipe.
- When you copy an assembler recipe to a requester chest, the game configures approximately enough ingredients for 30 seconds of continuous crafting.
- If the assembler’s recipe changes, recopy the recipe or update the request quantities so the chest is not still requesting the previous ingredients.
Check the requester’s circuit enable condition
A requester chest that is disabled by its circuit condition does not request items. Inspect its enable/disable setting and the signals feeding that condition. Disconnect the condition temporarily; if requests resume, repair the threshold, signal type, or wire source before reconnecting the assembler.
Do not treat an empty requester chest as proof that Set recipe failed. First check whether the assembler has a recipe, then whether the chest is enabled, and finally whether the logistic network can deliver the requested materials.
Assembler-only versus assembler-plus-requester designs

Build and test the assembler-only path first. Add the requester chest after the recipe remains stable, then test logistics and chest conditions separately.
Blueprints, research, and copied settings
A blueprint can preserve a recipe configuration that was created before the relevant technology was researched. Placing that blueprint does not bypass the research requirement. Research the technology, select a compatible assembler, and set or paste the recipe again after the technology is available.

If a blueprint still behaves unexpectedly, perform the one-combinator test on the placed machine rather than editing the blueprint immediately. This separates an outdated recipe assignment from a live network conflict. Once the machine works, recreate or update the blueprint with the researched recipe and the intended wire connections.
Common symptoms and exact fixes

A reliable test circuit
Use this minimal arrangement when troubleshooting a complex factory:
- Place one assembler that is known to support the target recipe.
- Research the recipe technology with the current force.
- Remove all materials from the assembler’s input and trash slots.
- Place one constant combinator and configure only the target recipe signal with a positive value.
- Connect one wire color from the combinator to the assembler; leave the other color disconnected.
- Enable Set recipe and observe whether the recipe appears.
- If it fails, replace the signal with a different researched recipe that the same machine can craft. This tests whether the original recipe, rather than the circuit, is the issue.
- If it succeeds, reconnect the factory network one branch at a time and watch for the first change.
Once the minimal circuit works, add requester logistics separately. Keep recipe signals, enable conditions, and ingredient-supply signals on clearly separated branches so a later redesign does not silently feed an item or fluid signal into Set recipe.
What the behavior means
Set recipe is deliberately constrained: it cannot use unresearched technology, unsupported signal classes, non-positive values, or a machine whose inventories still contain materials that would become unmanaged trash. Red and green networks are one summed input, not two independent recipe channels. A requester chest adds another independent state machine with its own logistic and circuit rules.

Consequently, the dependable fix is not to increase a signal value at random. Strip the network to one positive researched recipe, clear the assembler, confirm the machine category, and then restore the rest of the factory while observing which branch changes the result.
