Short answer: Wube publishes 4 GB RAM and a dual-core 3 GHz or faster CPU as minimum requirements for the Factorio PC game, and 8 GB RAM with a quad-core 3 GHz or faster CPU as recommended PC hardware. Those figures are not dedicated-server benchmarks. Factorio’s official material does not provide a tested RAM or CPU formula for a particular player count, map, save, or mod set, so a responsible server plan starts with the published client requirements and then validates the actual workload.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Factorio servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
For a small private game, hosting from a computer that is already running Factorio may be enough. A dedicated headless server is better when the world should remain available while nobody is playing, and managed hosting is the convenience choice when you do not want to maintain an operating system, network, updates, saves, or mods.

What the published requirements actually mean
Factorio’s FAQ lists requirements for the PC game. They are useful as a baseline for a machine that runs the graphical client, but they do not establish how much memory or processor time a dedicated server needs under a particular simulation load.
| Published figure | What it describes | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB RAM | Minimum PC game requirement | A guaranteed minimum for every headless server |
| Dual-core, 3 GHz or faster CPU | Minimum PC game processor | That any dual-core machine will maintain a target update rate with your save |
| 3 GB disk space | Minimum PC game storage requirement | Complete capacity for saves, mods, logs, backups, and operating-system files |
| 8 GB RAM | Recommended PC game memory | A universal dedicated-server size |
| Quad-core, 3 GHz or faster CPU | Recommended PC game processor | A guarantee for a 500-player game or a heavily modded factory |
The FAQ also says multiplayer supports up to 500 players in one game. That is a product capability statement, not a promise that a particular virtual machine, home connection, map, or mod collection can run 500 players smoothly. Treat the number as an upper-limit feature description, not as a shopping specification.

How much RAM and CPU should a server have?
There is no official workload table that maps player count, factory size, simulation speed, or mods to a required amount of RAM and CPU. Do not turn the 4 GB or 8 GB PC figures into a supposedly precise “server tier.” Instead, use them as a starting point and leave headroom for the operating system and everything around the game process.
For a small private world
A lightly used server with a few players and an uncomplicated save can be attempted on hardware around the published recommended PC baseline. The practical question is whether the machine keeps the simulation responsive while it is also performing backups, updates, remote administration, or other work. A computer that barely meets the game minimum leaves little room for those tasks.

As a world grows, its save data, entity count, logistics activity, and mod logic become the workload you must observe. More players can create more simultaneous activity, but player count alone is not a reliable sizing equation. A large, automated factory with a small group may be more demanding than a quiet map with more connected clients. Mods can add their own memory and simulation costs.

Because no official benchmark is supplied, select a machine with spare capacity, then monitor CPU utilization, memory pressure, swap activity, disk space, and the game’s simulation performance during your busiest sessions. Increase resources only when measurements show a bottleneck; adding RAM cannot fix a CPU-bound simulation, and adding cores does not automatically make every part of a game tick parallel.
Storage
Wube’s 3 GB figure is for the PC game and should not be treated as a complete server-storage plan. Reserve space for the server package, operating-system updates, saves, mod files, logs, and several backup generations. An SSD is a sensible storage option for a self-hosted installation and save files, but the official material does not establish that one is mandatory or quantify a simulation-speed benefit.
Choose how the game will be hosted
| Mode | Computer availability | Administration | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host while playing | The host machine must be running, and its owner normally plays | You manage the game and connection from the client | Short sessions with a small group |
| Self-managed dedicated server | A separate machine or instance stays online | You handle the OS, Factorio version, mods, saves, backups, firewall, and settings | A persistent world and full control |
| Managed game hosting | The provider keeps the service online | The provider handles much of the machine and network administration; you still manage game-level choices according to its controls | Convenience when you do not want to run a server |
Location matters in every model. Put the server near the players when possible and consider upload capacity, latency, packet loss, and whether your connection permits inbound traffic. A powerful CPU cannot compensate for an unreliable route to the players.

Factorio headless server options
Factorio provides a free Linux x64 headless package without graphics or audio. The official FAQ says that Windows can use the normal Windows game package as a headless server. The download page displayed stable version 2.0.77 on October 13, 2026; releases change, so check the download page for the version you intend to run and keep every client and mod aligned with it.
Headless mode does not initialize graphics, works without a display, starts faster, and uses less memory than graphical operation. It starts with the save you supply, has no in-game character, pauses when no players are connected by default unless you change that behavior, saves when it exits, and continues to autosave normally.
Start a dedicated server
The dedicated-server command uses --start-server and requires a save file. If you do not have one, Factorio can create it with --create. Exact executable paths differ by installation, so run the command from the directory containing your Factorio executable or provide its full path.

- Install a matching build. Download the Linux headless package or the regular Windows package, then note the exact game version.
- Create or copy a save. A new world can be generated with
--create; an existing save must be available to the account that runs the server. - Launch the save. Start the server with
--start-serverfollowed by the save-file path. For example:factorio --start-server saves/my-world.zip. - Apply settings when needed. The command reference supports options for server settings, port, bind address, RCON, whitelist, ban list, admin list, and console logging. Keep configuration files readable only by administrators.
- Connect a client. Have players use the server address and port, then verify that their Factorio version and mods match the server.
- Stop cleanly. Use the server’s normal shutdown procedure so the game can save on exit. Abrupt power loss is a backup and data-integrity risk.
Linux requirements beyond CPU and RAM
A Linux deployment is also an operating-system and security project. The official Wiki guide recommends creating a separate service account, commonly named factorio, instead of running the game as root. Give that account ownership only of the files it needs and keep administrative credentials separate.
The guide states that Factorio requires glibc 2.31. Its example notes that CentOS/RHEL 7 ships glibc 2.17, which does not meet that requirement without a separately compiled newer library. The procedure is based on older CentOS/RHEL installations, so it should not be read as certification for every current distribution. Verify the chosen operating system, architecture, libraries, and Factorio release before deployment; upgrading or replacing system glibc can affect other software and should not be improvised on a production machine.
The Wiki setup does not configure your firewall or port forwarding. You must do that for your own network and provider. Open only the required game port, restrict administrative interfaces such as RCON, and test access from outside the local network rather than assuming that a local connection proves Internet reachability.

Network, account and server settings
Factorio’s server settings can define the server name, description, tags, maximum players, browser visibility, authentication, and a game password. Visibility can be public, LAN-only, or hidden. A public listing requires credentials. Authentication tokens are sensitive: the Wiki warns that the settings file is plain text, so protect its permissions and do not paste it into tickets, chat, or public repositories.
Use a whitelist when the world is private, an administrator list for trusted operators, and a ban list when necessary. Set a non-obvious game password for groups that do not need public discovery. If you use a bind address, choose the interface that should accept game traffic rather than exposing every interface by default.

Server and client versions must match, and the same applies to mods and their versions. Before an upgrade, make a dated copy of the save and record the active mod list. Test a copy first when the world is valuable. Keep backups on storage separate from the live game directory so a bad update, accidental deletion, or disk failure does not remove both the server and its recovery copy.
Plan maintenance around the game’s pause and save behavior. A server that pauses while empty reduces unattended simulation, while a continuously running world may be appropriate for a group that expects the factory to advance between sessions. Whichever policy you choose, communicate restart windows and confirm that the latest backup completed before changing versions.
Diagnose a slow or unreachable server
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on the configured port.
- Check the host firewall, cloud firewall, router port forwarding, and the bind address.
- Test from a different network; a successful LAN test does not verify Internet routing.
- Confirm that the client is using the same Factorio version, mods, and password.
The simulation slows during busy periods
- Observe CPU use and memory pressure during the slowdown, not while the map is idle.
- Check whether another process, backup, update, or scheduled job is competing for resources.
- Compare behavior with mods disabled only on a copy of the save; never experiment on the sole production save.
- If the host is CPU-bound, move the server to faster hardware or reduce competing work. If it is paging or running out of memory, add memory and verify that the operating system has adequate disk space.
The server stops after a reboot
- Run it under the dedicated service account and configure the operating system’s service manager to start it after networking is available.
- Review console logs and exit status rather than launching repeatedly by hand.
- Check that the save path, permissions, library requirements, and mounted storage are available at boot.
When managed hosting is the better choice
Managed Factorio hosting trades control for convenience. It can be appropriate when you do not want to patch an operating system, maintain firewall rules, keep a home computer online, or build your own backup and restart routine. You should still inspect a provider’s current documentation for its actual CPU and RAM allocation, storage policy, backup retention, mod support, version controls, location choices, access to logs, and rules for moving your save. The official material reviewed here does not establish provider prices, performance tiers, or feature comparisons, so do not choose a plan from a generic player-count label alone.
Self-hosting remains attractive when you already have a reliable always-on machine, understand network administration, need complete control of files and mods, or want to keep the save on hardware you manage. Hosting from the same PC used to play is the simplest option, but the world disappears when that computer sleeps, reboots, or loses its connection.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose host-while-playing for occasional sessions where availability between games does not matter.
- Choose a dedicated self-managed server when persistence, customization, and administrative control outweigh setup work.
- Choose managed hosting when uptime and convenience matter more than direct OS and network control.
- Start capacity planning with the published 4 GB/dual-core minimum and 8 GB/quad-core recommendation as PC baselines, not server guarantees.
- Reserve storage beyond the 3 GB PC requirement for saves, mods, logs, backups, and system files.
- Verify glibc and distribution compatibility on Linux, use a separate service account, and secure the firewall and plain-text settings file.
- Measure the real save and mod workload before scaling; official sources do not provide a universal RAM or CPU number for a given player count.
