When Factorio cannot connect to a server, the cause is usually one of four boundaries: the game and mod versions do not match, the wrong join method or address is being used, the host is not reachable through UDP, or the dedicated-server process is misconfigured. Check compatibility first, then use the least complicated connection path available, and only afterward troubleshoot router and firewall rules.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start with a quick triage
Use the symptom that best matches your situation before changing settings. This prevents you from changing a router rule when the real problem is a mismatched mod or a stopped server process.

1. Make every game instance identical
Factorio’s official guidance treats exact compatibility as a requirement: all participating instances must use the same game version and the same mods. A connection can fail even when the server address is correct if one player is on a different release, has a mod enabled that the server lacks, or has a different version of a shared mod.
- On the server and every client, record the complete Factorio version, not merely the major release.
- Compare the enabled-mod list item by item. Check both whether each mod is present and which version it uses.
- Disable an extra client-only mod or install the server’s exact mod set before attempting another join.
- Restart Factorio after changing versions or mods so the running instance actually loads the corrected set.
- Have the host confirm the save was created for the same game and mod combination. If the server process reports a compatibility error, fix that before investigating networking.
Do this comparison before port forwarding. Network changes cannot make incompatible game data communicate.

2. Choose the least fragile way to join
Factorio supports several connection paths. Pick the one that matches the host’s network rather than defaulting to a direct address.
| Method | Use it when | What must be true | Typical failure boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam invite | The host and players can use Steam and the session is being hosted through the normal game flow. | The invite reaches the intended Factorio session and each player passes the compatibility check. | Steam status, local filtering, or a host that is not actually running the session. |
| Public server browser | The server is published for browser discovery. | The listing is current and the server accepts the subsequent UDP connection. | A server can be listed even when NAT traversal or UDP acceptance fails. |
| Play on LAN | Everyone is on the same local network. | Players can reach the host on that LAN and the host firewall permits Factorio traffic. | Local firewall rules, a different network segment, or a server bound to the wrong interface. |
| Direct IP and port | You know the server’s reachable address and configured port. | Internet players use the host’s public IP; LAN players use the appropriate local address; the port matches the server. | Wrong address, wrong port, NAT, router forwarding, or firewall filtering. |
| Virtual LAN | The host cannot configure router forwarding but all players can use the same virtual network. | Every participant joins the virtual network and connects through the virtual-LAN address. | Virtual-network membership, local firewall policy, or an incorrectly selected address. |
For a simple home session, try a Steam invite first, then LAN if everyone is physically on the same network. Use direct IP and port when you control the endpoint. A virtual-LAN method is the practical fallback when the router cannot expose the host.
3. Make an Internet-hosted game reachable
Factorio uses UDP only. The default server port is UDP 34197, although the host can change it. The external address and the configured port must point to the same running server.
- Find the intended endpoint. The host should give Internet players the host’s public IP address and the server’s configured port. Do not send a private router address to someone outside the home network.
- Confirm the server port. Read the host or dedicated-server configuration and note the actual value. If it was changed from the default, use the changed value everywhere.
- Create a router forwarding rule. In the router’s port-forwarding screen, create a rule for protocol UDP, with the external port set to the server port and the destination set to the host computer’s local IP and the same internal port. Save or apply the rule.
- Forward to the correct machine. If several computers are connected, make sure the destination is the machine running Factorio, not another desktop, console, or the router itself.
- Allow the traffic on the host. The operating-system firewall and any antivirus or security suite must allow the Factorio client or server process and the selected UDP port. A router rule cannot override a host-level block.
- Retry with the exact address. Have the remote player use the public IP and configured port in Factorio’s direct-connect option. A typo in either field produces the same timeout-like symptom as a blocked port.
LAN and Internet players can coexist in Factorio’s client-server mode. The outside player still depends on the host’s public reachability, while the LAN player can use the local path; traffic is relayed through the server and may involve an additional network hop.
4. If router forwarding is not possible
A server behind NAT needs a publicly reachable address for ordinary Internet connections unless every player is on the same LAN. If you cannot configure forwarding on the router, use a virtual-LAN tool such as Hamachi as the documented workaround.
- Install the same virtual-LAN software for the host and every player.
- Have everyone join the same virtual network and confirm that each participant appears as connected.
- Start or host the Factorio game on the host machine.
- Give players the host’s virtual-LAN address rather than the home router’s public address.
- Keep the compatibility, Factorio port, and host-firewall checks in place; a virtual network does not correct a mismatched mod set or a stopped server.
This approach changes the network path, not the Factorio session itself. If the virtual-LAN connection works while the public connection does not, the original fault is at the router or NAT boundary.

5. Run and test a dedicated or headless server
A headless server has no game window, so a successful launch and a successful network connection are separate checks. Start the process with a save, verify its port and bind settings, and then test a client connection.
Start with a save
Launch the server with the documented --start-server option and the save file, for example factorio --start-server SAVE. Replace SAVE with the actual save path or filename used by the installation. If the process starts without a save, players have nothing to join even though a server executable may be running.
Check the port and bind options
Inspect the server’s --port setting and its --bind setting. The port must match the router rule and the address supplied to clients. The bind value must expose the interface on which players are expected to reach the server; an overly specific or incorrect bind can leave the process listening somewhere clients cannot use.
Test from a client
Use Factorio’s command-line connection test with --mp-connect ADDRESS, replacing ADDRESS with the target address and port in the format required by the server configuration. Test from outside the host’s local network when you are checking Internet reachability. A successful local test does not prove that router forwarding works for remote players.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSeparate process errors from network errors
If the dedicated process exits, cannot load the save, or reports a bind or port error, correct that first. If it remains running and local clients connect but remote clients do not, return to the NAT, forwarding, and firewall checks rather than changing the save.

Factorio can use matching-server discovery, keepalives, and NAT punching to help peers find one another. Discovery is not a guarantee that the final game connection will succeed. The Factorio development team’s Friday Facts #143 described an expected NAT-punching success rate of about 70 percent under the conditions they tested in 2016. That figure is historical, not a current universal reliability guarantee.

Therefore, a server shown in the public list may still reject the connection. If the listing appears but joining fails, test a direct reachable endpoint, a Steam invite, or a virtual-LAN path and verify that the host accepts the configured UDP traffic.

Nobody can join
Have the host confirm that the session or headless process is still running and that the intended save is loaded. Next, perform the exact version and mod comparison. If compatibility is correct, check the configured UDP port, the router’s destination host, and the host firewall. A failure for every player points to the shared server path rather than one person’s client.
LAN players connect but Internet players time out
The local game proves that Factorio is running and that at least one path to the host works. Concentrate on the public boundary: use the public IP for remote players, verify the forwarding rule targets the host machine, and permit the same UDP port through the host firewall. If router changes are unavailable, move all participants to a virtual-LAN path or use a Steam-based session.
Only one player cannot join
Compare that player’s exact game version and enabled mods with a working player. Then check the local firewall or antivirus policy and re-enter the address and port manually. If everyone else can connect through the same method, do not change the server’s router rule until this local comparison is complete.
The server is visible but the connection fails
Visibility confirms that the server was discovered, not that the game traffic can complete. Try direct connection to the configured endpoint. If that fails too, inspect NAT traversal, UDP forwarding, and host filtering. If direct connection works, the discovery path rather than the Factorio server itself is the failing component.
The message says network communication could not be established
Treat this as a transport failure first. Recheck the address format, confirm that the server is listening on the selected port, and make sure the host firewall and router both allow UDP. Once transport works, any remaining error is more likely to be version, mod, or save compatibility.
A dedicated server works locally but not remotely
Use the same address and port in the remote test that you used in the server’s configuration. Check --port and --bind, then verify that the router forwards that port to the headless host. Do not assume a successful connection from the host computer proves that Internet players can reach it.
Quick Recap
8. A clean order for the next attempt
- Stop all stale Factorio clients and server processes.
- Make the game version and mod set identical for the host and every player.
- Choose the least fragile available path: Steam, LAN, direct endpoint, or virtual LAN according to the network conditions.
- If the path crosses the Internet, write down the server’s configured UDP port, public address, forwarding destination, and firewall allowance.
- Start the session or dedicated process with the intended save.
- Test first from a player on the same network, then from a remote player if Internet access is required.
- Change one boundary at a time and record whether the result changes. That isolates compatibility, process, NAT, and firewall faults instead of mixing them together.
