To sign out of FaceTime, use the FaceTime-specific control on your device: on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > FaceTime, tap the Apple Account shown, then tap Sign Out; on Mac, choose FaceTime > Settings > General > Sign Out. If you joined a call in a browser, choose Leave to exit the call—Apple’s browser instructions describe leaving a call, not signing out of a FaceTime account.
Choose the action that matches what you want to do
| Your goal | Use this control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Stop FaceTime calls on iPhone or iPad | Turn FaceTime off in Settings > Apps > FaceTime | Disables FaceTime calling on that device. |
| Sign out of FaceTime on iPhone or iPad | Tap the Apple Account in FaceTime settings, then tap Sign Out | Signs the account out of FaceTime. |
| Sign out of FaceTime on Mac | FaceTime > Settings > General > Sign Out | Stops FaceTime account use on the Mac until you sign in again. |
| Exit a browser call | Choose Leave in the call | Leaves the active call; it is not an account sign-out. |
| Stop FaceTime alerts on Mac | Change or turn off FaceTime notifications | Addresses interruptions without signing out of FaceTime. |
Signing out of the entire Apple Account is a broader device-level action, not the usual FaceTime-only solution.

How to sign out of FaceTime on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then FaceTime.
- Tap the Apple Account shown on the FaceTime screen.
- Tap Sign Out.
If you only want to stop making and receiving FaceTime calls on this iPhone, switch FaceTime off on the same screen instead. Apple also allows FaceTime to use a phone number as a contact method without signing in to an Apple Account, so the account sign-out option and the FaceTime on/off switch serve different purposes.

How to sign out of FaceTime on Mac
- Open the FaceTime app.
- In the menu bar, choose FaceTime > Settings. Some older instructions call this window Preferences.
- Click General, then click Sign Out.
While signed out, you cannot make or receive FaceTime calls, change FaceTime settings, or view previous calls until you sign in again. If the issue is unwanted interruptions rather than account use, adjust or turn off FaceTime notifications instead.
How to leave FaceTime in a browser
A browser participant joins a FaceTime call from a link; this workflow is different from signing out of the FaceTime app on an Apple device.

Apple’s browser instructions explain how to join and leave a linked call, but do not describe a browser-based FaceTime account session to sign out of. Android and Windows participants need an internet connection and a current Chrome or Edge browser. A Mac running macOS 12 or later joins through the FaceTime app; other received links may be joined in a browser without signing in.

Signing out of the Apple Account at device level also signs you out of FaceTime, the App Store, iMessage, and other Apple services. Apple says information remains available in iCloud, but synced data may be removed from the device unless you choose to keep a copy. Use the FaceTime-specific sign-out control unless you intend to sign out of the device’s Apple Account and understand the wider effects.

If Sign Out is missing or FaceTime will not activate
For FaceTime sign-in or activation trouble, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance includes turning FaceTime off, restarting the device, then returning to the FaceTime settings to try again. On iPad, the setting is Settings > Apps > FaceTime; on Mac, use FaceTime > Settings (or Preferences) > General. If the control is unavailable or the account still will not activate, follow Apple’s full FaceTime sign-in troubleshooting steps; these actions are not a guarantee that every restriction or account problem will be resolved.
