It can add a border, frame, nameplate, logo, glow, or themed decoration, but it does not improve the camera itself or remove the room behind you. In the usual setup, a webcam source sits below a transparent PNG or WEBM source in the scene’s layer stack.
What a facecam overlay actually does
A facecam overlay changes the presentation of a camera feed, not the camera image or its quality. Common designs include:
- A simple border around a rectangular camera
- A decorative frame with a transparent center
- A lower-third containing your name, role, or social handle
- An animated themed frame
- A shadow, glow, or accent behind the camera
- A combined camera, label, and branding layout
- A mask-and-frame combination for a circle, rounded rectangle, or custom shape
The visible artwork and the camera crop are separate. A circular border by itself does not make the video circular; without a mask, the webcam remains rectangular inside the artwork.
Overlay, mask, and background removal compared

Why use one—and when not to
A well-designed frame makes the camera position obvious, creates consistent branding, separates your face from busy gameplay, and leaves room for a name, sponsor, or social handle. It can make a small camera window feel deliberate without buying a new camera.

The trade-offs are practical: the frame consumes screen space, thick or moving artwork can distract from speech or gameplay, and a mismatched design can reveal empty margins or black bars. An overlay cannot fix poor lighting, focus, framing, or camera exposure. If your camera is tiny or the content should remain unobstructed, no overlay may be the better choice.
Choose the right file

For static transparent artwork, PNG is the usual choice; Elgato’s overlay guidance identifies WEBM for animated transparency and notes that non-rectangular designs may need a separate mask (Elgato overlay documentation). Inspect a downloaded file in an editor with a checkerboard background rather than trusting a preview thumbnail.
Add a frame to OBS Studio
Basic frame-over-camera setup
- Open OBS Studio and select or create the scene.
- In Sources, click + and choose Video Capture Device. Select your webcam and confirm it.
- Resize and position the webcam in the preview.
- Click + again and choose Image for a static file, or the appropriate media source for an animation.
- Select the PNG or animated asset.
- Move the frame source above the webcam source in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear on top (OBS Studio overview).
- Align the camera inside the frame and lock both sources when finished.
OBS lets you position and resize sources directly in the preview. Useful shortcuts documented by OBS include Ctrl to temporarily disable snapping, Alt while dragging an edge to crop, Ctrl+F to fit to screen, Ctrl+S to stretch to screen, Ctrl+D to center, and Ctrl+R to reset size and position. Stretching can distort faces, so crop or resize proportionally whenever possible (OBS Studio overview).

Make a circular or custom-shaped camera
- Add the webcam as a Video Capture Device.
- Right-click the webcam source and choose Filters.
- Add an Image Mask/Blend filter and load the supplied mask.
- Select the appropriate mask type and adjust alignment.
- Add the decorative frame as a separate image source above the masked camera.
- Check the result against both light and dark backgrounds and test movement near every edge.
OBS also documents Crop/Pad, Color Correction, Scaling/Aspect Ratio, Color Key, and Chroma Key filters. The result depends on the mask’s shape and alpha channel (OBS Studio overview).

Align the frame without distortion
- Temporarily make the frame easy to see, or add it before fine-tuning the camera.
- Resize the webcam until its visible edges fit the frame opening.
- Crop unwanted edges instead of stretching the source.
- Check the top of your head, shoulders, and both sides.
- Lean toward each edge to ensure your face does not leave the intended opening.
- Review the scene at the actual output resolution, not only the editor preview.
- Lock the sources after alignment.
Common camera layouts are 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, and 1:1. Match the intended ratio where possible, or choose artwork with enough internal margin for deliberate cropping (Elgato overlay documentation). Changing OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution can require sources to be resized or realigned, so recheck the frame afterward.
Remove the webcam background only if you need to
A transparent frame does not remove the room behind you. For a physical green screen, add the webcam, right-click it, choose Filters, add Chroma Key, and tune similarity, smoothness, spill reduction, and opacity until the background disappears without cutting into hair or clothing. OBS lists Chroma Key as the standard greenscreen filter (OBS webcam FAQ).

Software background removal may come from a camera utility, plugin, or third-party application; compatibility, system requirements, and pricing vary. A normal rectangular webcam with a transparent decorative frame needs no background removal and is generally the least demanding setup.
Add one in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open the scene or scene collection in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Add the webcam as a camera or video source.
- Add the PNG as an image source, or the animated asset as a media source.
- Place the artwork above the camera, resize both elements, and align them.
- Lock the sources when finished.
The concepts are similar to OBS, but source names, import behavior, browser-source options, and subscription features can differ. Streamlabs’ getting-started guide covers adding a webcam and additional scene sources (Streamlabs Desktop guide). Older tutorials may call the application “Streamlabs OBS” or “SLOBS”; the current desktop branding is generally Streamlabs Desktop.

Use the composed camera in Zoom, Discord, or another app
- Build and test the scene in OBS.
- In OBS’s Controls dock, start Virtual Camera.
- In Zoom, Discord, or the receiving application, choose OBS Virtual Camera as the camera.
OBS Virtual Camera can output Program, Preview, a selected Scene, or a selected Source (OBS Virtual Camera guide). Choose Program for normal live output. Preview can expose scene changes and unfinished edits during a call. The receiving app may independently mirror, crop, compress, or reframe the feed, so verify the final image there as well.

Animated overlays: check these before streaming
- Confirm that the file actually includes an alpha channel.
- Check whether it loops and whether it contains sound.
- Verify its intended resolution and frame rate.
- Test the format in the exact application and operating system you will use.
- Look for an opaque rectangle that would hide the webcam.
- Watch for distracting motion or unnecessary resource use.
Elgato identifies WEBM as a common format for animated transparent overlays, but support depends on the particular asset and application (Elgato overlay documentation). For most beginners, a local PNG is safer and easier to troubleshoot.
Troubleshoot the usual failures

| Face looks stretched | Different aspect ratios or stretch transform | Match ratios and crop rather than stretching. |
| Frame does not line up | Internal padding, ratio mismatch, or changed camera resolution | Set the intended camera ratio, crop carefully, and realign at output resolution. |
| Hair or shoulders are cut out | Chroma-key or background-removal settings | Improve lighting and tune the key conservatively; this is not a frame problem. |
| Overlay is blurry | Low-resolution asset or excessive enlargement | Use artwork at least as large as the final camera window and avoid enlarging it. |

Free, paid, and custom ways to get a frame
Free and self-made
OBS Studio is free and open source, with no watermark or commercial-use restriction according to its help portal (OBS help). You can create a simple border in an image editor and export it as a transparent PNG. You still need to check the license of any downloaded artwork.
Ready-made marketplaces
OWN3D sells individual webcam overlays and complete themed packages, with products advertised for OBS Studio, Streamlabs, StreamElements, Twitch, YouTube, and other listed tools. Nerd or Die’s Overlay Maker is aimed at custom exports, while its inspected Stealth package listed product-specific prices of $10 for an overlay package, $20 with source files, and $30 for a full package with source files (Stealth package). Source files may require compatible editing software.
Streamlabs provides themes and overlay integration through Streamlabs Desktop and its overlay marketplace. Some assets are part of broader ecosystems or subscriptions; check the current terms rather than assuming a subscription grants perpetual ownership.
Browser sources and widgets
Use a browser source when the design includes live alerts, social feeds, labels, or interactive information. It depends on a network connection and the vendor’s hosted page, so a local PNG or WEBM is more dependable for a purely decorative frame. Community browser-source examples include KernFerm’s browser-source overlays.
Licensing and purchase checks
- Confirm whether the license permits livestreams, recordings, monetized channels, and client work.
- Check restrictions on resale, redistribution, template creation, and using source files in paid projects.
- Distinguish a one-time downloadable asset from access through a subscription or software library.
- Save the license terms and receipt with the project files.
When a facecam overlay is the wrong solution
Choose no overlay for a minimalist scene, a very small camera, or content where the face must stay unobstructed. Upgrade the physical camera when exposure, sharpness, color, or framing is the problem; camera hardware does not replace correct scene composition. Elgato’s Facecam guide describes that device as a UVC camera configurable through OBS or Camera Hub, but that is an example of camera setup rather than a requirement for overlays (Elgato Facecam setup).
