Facebook is testing an app layout in India that opens some users to full-screen Reels instead of the usual Feed-first view. It is an experiment, not a confirmed permanent change for everyone: people included in the test can opt out, and Classic Feed remains available as a separate tab.
Why does Facebook open to Reels now?
Meta says it is testing a more immersive, video-forward Facebook experience for people it believes want more video. Facebook head Tom Alison described the rationale in a July 2026 statement: “People are showing us they want more immersive, visual, video-forward experiences, and video is where conversations are happening, communities are forming, and even commerce is starting to take place.”

Meta said it planned to begin testing internationally in countries where video is popular and to explore a U.S. test the following year. TechCrunch reported India as the first market for this Facebook test. The U.S. possibility is exploratory; it is not a confirmed launch. Meta’s explanation is a statement of its rationale, not independent evidence that users prefer the new design or that it increases engagement.

Can I change Facebook back to Feed?
If you are included in the test, Meta says you can opt out and return to a Feed-first opening experience. Classic Feed also remains accessible as a second tab, so opening to Reels does not mean Feed has disappeared.

Is Facebook making Reels the default in India?
Not for everyone, based on the information available by October 6, 2026. The change is being tested with a subset of users in India. Public reporting does not establish how many people are included, how they are selected, how long the test will run, or what effects Meta has measured. Those unknowns mean the test should not be treated as a nationwide or permanent rollout.
Why India is a relevant test market
Meta’s June 3, 2026 post summarized Meta-commissioned Ipsos research surveying more than 4,000 respondents across 23 locations, including metros, Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas, and rural India. Meta reported that 97% of surveyed users watched videos on Meta platforms daily; the reported daily video-engagement figures were 98% for urban respondents and 94% for rural respondents. Meta also reported daily Reels use among 89% of surveyed Gen Z respondents.

The same research summary attributed nearly 60% higher creator engagement to Reels compared with other surveyed short-form video platforms. In a surveyed consumer journey, Meta attributed 81% product discovery, 66% consideration, and 47% purchase influence to Reels. These are publisher-reported findings from Meta-commissioned research, not audited platform-wide usage figures or results from the Facebook interface test. The summary does not show that these findings predict how the people selected for the test will behave.
What the test does—and does not—show
- It does show: Meta is trying a Reels-first opening screen with some Facebook users in India, while keeping an opt-out and access to Classic Feed.
- It does not show: that every Indian user will get the change, that the layout is permanent, or that Reels-first improves engagement or other outcomes.
- It does not confirm: a U.S. launch. Meta said it would explore testing there the following year, not that it had scheduled a rollout.
For creators, Meta’s July statement also mentioned its Creator Assistant, a tool it described as helping with idea brainstorming and interpreting creator performance. That is separate platform context, not evidence about the results of the Facebook layout test.
