Before you publish a Facebook Marketplace listing, check both the listing details and what a visitor can see on your Facebook profile. Meta says Marketplace buyers may see a seller overview with account tenure and friend count, as well as Marketplace activity such as listing history, item types, and seller ratings. Profile privacy settings can limit some exposure, but the official sources cited here do not establish that a “hide from friends” option is available to every seller or guarantees that friends will not see a listing.
What buyers may see about a Marketplace seller
In its March 12, 2026 Marketplace announcement, Meta said buyers would see a seller profile overview that includes how long the person has been on Facebook and their number of friends. Buyers may also see a Marketplace activity summary, including listing history, item types, and seller ratings. These are profile and Marketplace signals to consider before listing—not information that a seller can necessarily remove through a single privacy switch. Meta’s Marketplace announcement describes this feature context.

Facebook’s general privacy settings and the audience for your friends list affect profile visibility; they do not, by themselves, determine who can find, share, or encounter a Marketplace listing.

Preview your profile as a visitor
Use Facebook’s profile-review tools to see how your profile appears to the public or to a specific person. Look for public posts and profile details you do not want an unfamiliar buyer to see. Meta describes profile previews and other privacy tools in its Privacy Checkup and privacy tools.

Narrow the audience for your friends list
Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. To review it, open Audience and visibility → How people find and contact you → Who can see your friends list? and choose an audience that fits your needs. Menu wording can vary by app version and account. See Facebook Help’s friends-list guidance.
-
Account for mutual friends and other people’s settings
Restricting your full friends list does not make every friendship connection invisible. Facebook notes that another person’s settings can still expose connections, and people may see mutual friends. Treat a narrowed friends-list audience as a limit on your profile’s full list, not as complete social-graph privacy. Facebook Help explains this distinction.

Check tags and timeline review
Tag review and timeline review let you manage which tags and tagged posts appear on your profile. They are useful profile controls, but they do not establish whether a Marketplace listing will appear in a friend’s feed or search results. Meta outlines these checks in its privacy tools guidance.

Inspect every listing detail
Review photos and description for identifying details you did not intend to share, and check any pickup location or other transaction information before posting. Meta’s 2026 announcement says that, when sellers enable AI auto-replies, listing information such as the description, availability, pickup location, and price may be used to draft replies. Read the feature’s current on-screen explanation before enabling it. Meta’s announcement describes the feature.
-
Read any friend-hiding control carefully
If your current listing flow offers a control to hide a listing from friends, read its on-screen explanation and check the published listing’s audience. Do not assume it covers every listing type or prevents discovery through Marketplace search, sharing, or groups. Why older Marketplace descriptions are not a current privacy guarantee
Meta’s October 3, 2016 Marketplace launch post described nearby users seeing listing details, a seller’s name and profile photo, and a general location. That is historical launch-era context, not a complete specification of how current Marketplace visibility works. Do not use it to infer the exact audience or privacy behavior of today’s listing tools. Meta’s 2016 Marketplace announcement.
