Malini Narayanamoorthi’s story of setbacks is not a tale of never feeling unprepared. In an Electronics For You profile, she recalls a public singing stumble, a difficult start in chip design, and a first leadership role among engineers with deeper technical expertise. She learned to return to the stage after a public stumble
Narayanamoorthi recalls that her voice cracked during a singing competition and the audience laughed. Rather than avoid performing, she practiced and entered again the following year, when she won. The important part of the story is not the prize but the decision to participate again after an uncomfortable experience.
She describes herself as an average student and remembers being involved in sports, stage performances, debates, and other competitions at Cluny Convent in old Bengaluru. “If you put me in anything, singing, acting, poetry, I would just go do it,” she recalls in the EFY profile. She also jokes that “Studies were always happening somewhere on the side.” Her account emphasizes participation and recovery, not a claim that she found every activity easy.
Sports and family shaped how she approached change
Sport taught her to keep participating
In her teens, she played tennis and volleyball competitively. In a later official Renesas interview, she says she had been training to become a tennis player until an injury redirected her attention toward academics. She chose engineering because of her interests in mathematics, computer science, and physics. In the EFY profile, she connects sport with consistency, collaboration, and learning to recover after failure: “I can’t think of any week going by without play or exercise even now. It not only taught me consistency and hard work, but also how to compete, collaborate, fail gracefully, and recover.”

Family responsibilities brought a different kind of adjustment
The EFY profile describes her mother as a model of organization, planning, and execution, while her father encouraged systems thinking and recognized her ability to bring people together. Her grandfather’s blindness later in life and her grandmother’s empathy also shaped her outlook, according to the account.
After her mother died, Narayanamoorthi had to take on unfamiliar household responsibilities. One early kitchen attempt ended with a pressure cooker exploding, a detail the profile recounts humorously in retrospect. It illustrates how new responsibilities arrived alongside grief; it is not a product-safety assessment or a general lesson about pressure cookers.

Teaching VLSI helped her build confidence in chip design
At her first described engineering job, at National Semiconductor, Narayanamoorthi encountered chip-design tools, systems, and Unix that left her feeling out of her depth. “I did not feel equipped,” she recalls in the EFY profile. She asked for help, and a professor suggested that she teach students VLSI design.
Studying in order to teach gave her a practical way to strengthen her technical foundation and discover how she learned best. The sequence matters: she did not present herself as already knowing everything; she used a teaching assignment to work through what she needed to understand. The profile does not give a date for this role or name the professor.

There is a later, separate example of institutional support for engineering education: Renesas and IIT Hyderabad announced a three-year MOU in June 2024 covering VLSI and embedded semiconductor systems research and collaboration. The company described plans for curriculum development, hands-on work using Renesas development boards, lab activity, outreach, proof-of-concept projects, and internship eligibility for students. That agreement provides educational context, but it is not the source of Narayanamoorthi’s earlier teaching experience.
Her leadership question shifted from expertise to trust
In her first leadership role, the engineers on her team often had greater technical expertise than she did. The EFY profile describes her initial challenge as a question of whether she knew enough. She came to ask instead: “How can I support and build trust with the team?” That change did not deny the value of technical skill; it reframed her contribution around enabling people who brought their own expertise.

Renesas announced on March 2, 2026, that Narayanamoorthi had assumed the title Vice President and President of Renesas Electronics India effective March 1, 2026. The company said she previously served as India Country Manager and Vice President of MID Engineering within its Analog & Mixed Signal Product Group. An Electronics For You image caption also describes a Renesas board being distributed to more than 300 universities; the number is attributable to that caption, not independently established by the IIT Hyderabad announcement.
