F-Droid 2.0 Shows the Project Is Still Building—Not That It’s Guaranteed to Last

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

F-Droid’s 2.0 Android client is a substantial rebuild, not a cosmetic refresh. The project says it spent more than a year on the redesign, built it with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and began a staged rollout after 14 test releases. That is evidence of active work on F-Droid today, not a guarantee that the project will exist indefinitely.

What changed in F-Droid 2.0?

F-Droid describes 2.0 as a complete redesign and its largest app update in ten years. The new client changes how users browse, search, install, and manage apps, while the rewrite is intended to make future maintenance and contributions easier.

Search and discovery

Search now includes app descriptions and translations, not just app names. A new Discover area highlights new and popular apps. The main navigation is organized around Discover, Search, and My Apps; Settings is in the upper-right, beside Repositories. Filters can be combined for anti-features, device compatibility, and category.

Installation and updates

The client asks for installation approval before downloading an app. It can handle multiple downloads and updates at once, and it notifies users about problems such as signing-key changes. Background update checks are on by default; users can retain manual and more fine-grained control, and F-Droid says existing preferences are respected. Material You color theming is optional.

Nearby sharing is absent for now

Nearby sharing was not ready for the initial 2.0 release. F-Droid says it is developing a replacement based on improved connection methods, so the omission is a temporary gap rather than an announced end to the feature.

Should you switch now? Check the release status first

F-Droid announced 2.0 on September 24, 2026. The official package listing checked October 3, 2026 showed a beta and a separate suggested stable build. Those labels can change, so check the official F-Droid package page before installing.

Build listed October 3, 2026 Status and compatibility What to consider
2.0.1 Beta, added September 29, 2026; Android 7.0 or newer required. Try it if you want the redesign and accept beta software.
1.23.2 Suggested stable build, added February 19, 2026. Choose the suggested stable option if you prefer not to use the beta.

F-Droid’s package listing recommends installing and using its client rather than downloading an APK directly: direct APK downloads do not provide update notifications and are described as a less secure download method. Use the official package page and its installation flow rather than an arbitrary APK mirror.

Why this release suggests F-Droid is active

A year-plus redesign, a rebuilt technical foundation, staged rollout, and plans for continued work are concrete signs that F-Droid is investing in its Android client. The project says it plans further work on performance, accessibility, app discovery, and usability, and invites community feedback, testing, translations, documentation, and code contributions. F-Droid put the point plainly in its launch announcement: “F-Droid 2.0 represents a major milestone, but it is not the end of the story. Rebuilding the app has given us a stronger foundation, yet there is still plenty of work ahead.”

What the Android verification debate does—and does not—mean

The policy discussion is contested, and neither side’s position should be mistaken for a settled outcome. In a September 2025 Android Developers Blog post, Google said developer verification is intended to protect users and developers from bad actors. Google also said verified developers could distribute apps through direct downloads or third-party stores, and described a free account route for hobbyists and small-scale creators to distribute to a limited number of devices.

F-Droid’s October 2025 response disputes Google’s reassurance. It argues that registration involving identity, app identifiers, signing-key evidence, and Google’s approval could undermine open app distribution. Those are F-Droid’s concerns and interpretation, not proof that the policy has already shut down F-Droid.

F-Droid quotes Google answering the question “Does this mean sideloading is going away on Android?” with: “Absolutely not. Sideloading is fundamental to Android and it is not going away.” F-Droid then directly challenges that assurance. The release of version 2.0 shows active development of the client; by itself, it does not resolve the disagreement over how developer verification could affect distribution.
