That is a different kind of upgrade from buying a hard drive: the optical drive reads or writes discs, while a hard drive adds digital storage. Without the actual purchase prices and a clear account of what “upgrade” meant, the claim that a disc drive was cheaper is personal—not a general cost comparison.
What an external disc drive changes
Many computers lack an optical drive. Connecting an external USB drive can make compatible CDs or DVDs accessible again, including disc-based software and media. A writer can also record supported formats to blank discs, as specified by the manufacturer.

That connection alone does not copy a disc to your computer, add files to a media library, or make content available through a media server. Choose by the discs you own
CDs and DVDs
For a collection limited to CDs and DVDs, a DVD drive may be enough. ASUS lists its ZenDrive U9M (SDRW-08U9M-U) for CD and DVD reading and writing, with USB 2.0 Type-C and Type-A connections and compatibility with specified Mac OS X and Windows versions. The Dell DW316 is another USB-powered CD/DVD writer. TechRadar’s September 11, 2026 coverage reported an Amazon price of $37.99 at publication/review time; that is a dated listing snapshot, not a current-price guarantee. Blu-ray and higher-capacity discs
A DVD-only drive will not read Blu-ray discs. If your collection includes Blu-ray, choose a drive explicitly specified for that format. OWC describes Mercury Pro burner configurations for DVD and Blu-ray, with Blu-ray capacity up to 100 GB; the vendor notes that the pictured drive is sold separately, so confirm the configuration and included components before buying. Check the connection and computer support
Do not assume that products with similar names use the same interface. ASUS lists USB 2.0 Type-C and Type-A for the U9M, while its ZenDrive U3M (SDRW-08U3M-U) is listed with USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 Type-C and USB power. Match the purchase to the job
- Occasional access to CDs or DVDs: A basic external DVD drive may meet the need if its connection and operating-system support fit your computer.
- Blu-ray collection: Select a model that explicitly supports Blu-ray; a DVD writer is not a substitute.
- Adding digital storage: Buy storage capacity appropriate to your files. An optical drive does not function as a hard drive.
- Moving large files frequently: A DVD writer is designed for optical media, not as a fast large-file transfer device.
- Building a digital or server-based library: Verify the disc-reading, conversion, playback, and server software workflow separately. A drive’s format and connection specifications do not promise that a media server will ingest or index its discs.

How to judge whether it is the cheaper upgrade
Compare the cost of the equipment needed for the job you actually want done. A fair comparison needs the optical drive’s price, the hard drive’s price and capacity, the disc formats involved, and any required software or blank media. The available product listings do not provide a like-for-like comparison with a hard drive, so they cannot establish that an optical drive is generally the cheaper upgrade.
If “upgrade” means making old discs readable on a computer without a built-in drive, an external optical drive addresses that access problem. If it means adding space, consolidating discs into files, or serving those files across devices, the drive is only one possible component—and may not be the part that provides the storage or completes the workflow.
