To save a webpage as a PDF, open the page in your browser or on your phone, go to the print controls, choose a PDF destination, check the print preview, and save. The resulting file opens in almost any PDF reader, so it travels well. What does not travel perfectly is the page’s exact layout and any interactive features, such as legacy forms, which some readers do not support. The sections below cover the steps for each platform, the settings that change how the page looks on paper, and the limits you should check before you send the file to someone else.
What “universal” means for a PDF from a webpage
A PDF is a portable file format. Anyone with a PDF viewer, such as Preview or Adobe Acrobat on a Mac, or a built-in reader in Edge or Firefox on Windows, can open it without needing the browser or app that created it. Apple’s support documentation makes this point directly: a PDF created on a Mac can be read by people who do not have the creating app, as long as they have a PDF viewer.

Portability is not the same as identical rendering. Three things can change how the file looks from the original page:

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Print styling on the website. Mozilla’s Firefox help notes that web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper than on screen. In its words: “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen, so don’t be surprised to see some changes.” (Mozilla Support, “How to print web pages in Firefox.”)
- Your print settings. Paper size, scale, orientation, and margins change where lines break and whether text or images are cut off.
- The reader’s features. The file can carry content that a particular viewer does not implement. Microsoft’s documentation for the PDF reader in Microsoft Edge states that XML Forms Architecture (XFA), a legacy form format, is not supported there.
For static text and images, a saved webpage PDF works as a dependable shareable snapshot. For forms, scripts, media, or anything interactive, test the file in the viewer your recipient will actually use, or keep the original link as a fallback.

Check the print preview before you save
Every browser route below ends in the same place: a print preview that you can adjust before anything is written to disk. Spend a minute there. Most of the problems people report with webpage PDFs, such as clipped sidebars, split tables, or missing colors, are visible in the preview and fixable with a setting.
| Setting | What it changes | When to adjust it |
|---|---|---|
| Destination | Whether the output is paper or a PDF file | Choose the PDF option, which is labeled “Save to PDF” in Firefox |
| Paper size and orientation | Page dimensions and whether the page is wide or tall | Use landscape for wide tables or charts |
| Scale | How large the page content is drawn | Reduce it if content is cut off at the right edge; Microsoft specifically advises checking scaled output |
| Margins | The space around the content | Narrow them to fit more text per page, or widen them for a document that will be printed and bound |
| Pages per sheet | How many webpage pages appear on each PDF page (Edge documents this control) | Leave at one for readable documents |
| Headers and footers | Browser-added page titles, URLs, and dates | Turn off for a clean copy; turn on when the source and date matter |
| Background graphics | Colors, shaded boxes, and background images | Turn on when the page’s look matters (see below) |
Save a webpage as PDF on each platform
Microsoft Edge on Windows and macOS
- Open the page you want to save.
- Select Settings and more, then Print. You can also press
Ctrl+Pon Windows orCommand+Pon macOS. - In the print panel, choose the PDF destination offered on your computer. Microsoft’s support documentation describes the printing controls but does not establish one identical PDF label across every configuration, so look for the option that saves to a file rather than to a physical printer.
- Review the preview and adjust margins, scaling, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Select Save.
Edge’s print panel also offers selection printing, which limits output to the text you highlighted before opening the panel, and a button that opens the system print dialog for more options. If the preview looks different from the original page, turn on background graphics before you save.

Safari on Mac
Be careful with File > Save As in Safari. On a Mac, the formats Apple documents there are Web Archive and Page Source, not PDF. To create a PDF instead:
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Choose File > Print.
- In the print dialog, open the PDF menu, usually at the bottom left, and select Save as PDF.
- Enter a file name and location, and use the options in the same dialog if you want a password on the file.
Google Chrome
This guide does not verify Chrome’s current desktop menus, so it does not give exact clicks for them. In general, press Ctrl+P or Command+P, look for a PDF or “Save as PDF” destination in the print window, and check the preview before saving. If the destination is missing, the system print dialog on your computer may offer a PDF option instead.

When to use simplified or reader formats
Full-page PDFs keep navigation, sidebars, and advertising, which is useful for records and evidence but tiring to read. Two options produce cleaner copies:
- Firefox simplified format. Select it in the print preview when it is available. It removes much of the surrounding content, but it can also drop elements you wanted, so check the preview first.
- Edge Immersive Reader. Microsoft says this clutter-free view can be used as a print workaround, but it is not available on every site. If it is not offered, use the standard print route.
Before you save either version, confirm that the text you need is still on the page in the preview. Simplified output is a rewrite of the layout, not a faithful copy.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Keep colors and shading in the PDF
Browsers often leave out background graphics by default, which removes colored headers, shaded tables, and background images. Microsoft says background graphics can be included in Edge and recommends turning them on when the preview or saved output differs from the webpage. The same applies in Firefox’s Backgrounds option. Expect a larger file when backgrounds are included.
Save selected content only
If you need one section rather than the whole page, select the text before opening the print panel. Edge documents selection printing for this purpose. In Firefox, use the page selection options in the print preview. Check the preview to confirm the selection was captured correctly, because a selection that spans several page elements can produce uneven breaks.
Compatibility checklist before you send the file
- Open the saved PDF in a different reader from the one you used to save it, ideally the one your recipient will use.
- Confirm that every paragraph, table, and image is visible and that no content is cut off at the page edge.
- If the page contained forms, buttons, embedded video, or scripts, verify that those features work in the recipient’s viewer. Legacy XFA forms, for example, are not supported by the Edge reader.
- Note the date and the source URL in the document if the content may change later. Turning on headers and footers in the print preview can add these details automatically.
Developers: exporting web content programmatically
If you embed web content in an application, Microsoft WebView2 provides PrintToPdf and PrintToPdfStream for printing the current top-level document to a PDF with configurable print settings. These are developer APIs, not a consumer workflow, and the same print-setting caveats apply to the output.
Editing or protecting the PDF after export
Basic export does not require paid software. If you need to change the text, add signatures, or restrict access after saving, you will need a PDF editor. On a Mac, the Print-to-PDF workflow in the print dialog includes password options, so you can add a password at the moment you save.
Last updated against Microsoft, Mozilla, and Apple help content retrieved in October 2026. Browser and operating-system menus change with updates, so if a label above does not match your screen, follow the print dialog and look for the PDF option.
