It works by matching a request to available query views—not by promising an answer to any question about any Intune field. To use it, open Explorer in the Microsoft Intune admin center, choose a supported prompt, provide any requested details, and run the query. Microsoft’s Explorer guide describes the workflow and current areas of coverage.
What Explorer does—and what it does not do
Explorer is the data-exploration part of Copilot in Intune. You describe what you want to find in ordinary language; Intune maps the request to an available query view. Copilot then summarizes the results, explains the query, and may suggest follow-up queries or actions. The available views determine what can be queried, so use the suggestions shown in the admin center rather than assuming every question is supported.

Copilot in Intune is broader than Explorer. Microsoft also documents capabilities for policy and setting management, device details and troubleshooting, Endpoint Privilege Management request analysis, Surface troubleshooting, and Windows 365 Cloud PC insights. Specialized Intune agents cover workflows such as change review, device offboarding, policy configuration, and vulnerability remediation. Those capabilities are not all actions available from an Explorer result. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Intune overview for the broader feature set.
How to explore Intune data with natural language
- In the Microsoft Intune admin center, open Explorer.
- Enter a concrete request. As you type, review the suggested prompts; these help identify requests that map to available query views.
- Supply any required parameters, such as a platform or device detail, then run the query.
- Review the returned results and Copilot’s summary, query explanation, suggested queries, and recommended actions. Treat recommendations as guidance to assess against your organization’s needs and permissions.
- Investigate an individual resource, export the results, or, for a result containing users or devices, add those items to a new or existing group when that option is available.
- If you add users or devices to a group, review and export the resulting progress report if you need to keep it. Microsoft says this report is not available again later.
For example, Microsoft’s documented prompt examples include “what are the top 5 apps” and “Get Platform devices that are noncompliant.” The right prompt is specific enough to identify the intended data, while the suggested prompts and any requested parameters help constrain it to a supported query.

Which Intune data areas can Explorer cover?
Microsoft documents Explorer query areas across these parts of Intune:
- Advanced Analytics
- App configuration and app protection
- Apps
- Audit logs
- Compliance
- Device configuration
- Device updates
- Device properties
- Endpoint Privilege Management
- Role-based access control
- Users and groups
- Windows Autopilot deployments
Coverage and query capabilities continue to evolve. The list of areas does not mean every field in each area can be queried with arbitrary wording; the live prompt suggestions are the practical guide to supported requests.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
What you can do with the results
Investigate and export
Use the results to inspect individual resources or export a result set for further work. Export is also the way to retain the group-addition progress report: Microsoft says it cannot be retrieved again later.

Turn user or device findings into targeting
When an Explorer result is a list of users or devices, you can add those items to a new or existing group. Administrators can then target apps and policies to that group. This is a follow-through path for qualifying results, not a claim that Explorer can directly apply every recommended change.

Access, permissions, and licensing
Explorer requires Security Copilot to be enabled and configured, including its first-run setup, and the Intune plugin must be enabled. The administrator also needs an appropriate Security Copilot or Microsoft Entra role. Copilot in Intune honors Intune role-based access controls and scope tags: the data an administrator can see and the actions they can perform remain limited by their assigned permissions.
Microsoft says Copilot in Intune is included with Security Copilot and does not require a separate Intune-specific Copilot license. That statement applies to Copilot in Intune generally. Do not confuse Explorer with the separate device query feature: Microsoft says device query use requires a license that includes Advanced Analytics. The Advanced Analytics requirement should not be applied to Explorer as a whole.

Choosing the right Copilot capability
- Use Explorer when the task is to find, summarize, or act on a supported set of Intune data.
- Use policy or setting management capabilities when the task is to work with policy configuration rather than explore query results.
- Use troubleshooting capabilities when the task is to investigate a device or service issue through the relevant Copilot workflow.
- Use a specialized agent when the task aligns with a documented agent workflow, such as offboarding or vulnerability remediation.
For a device-specific question, Microsoft’s examples include “Which devices aren’t encrypted?” and “Show me Windows 11 devices.” These examples are documented for device query; that feature is distinct from Explorer and has its own Advanced Analytics licensing requirement. Check the relevant feature and its available prompts before treating a question as an Explorer query.
