Explore Anthropic Economic Index Data by Asking Claude

Ask Claude questions about Anthropic Economic Index data, then inspect the source data and release context behind the answers. The Index reflects Claude usage, not the whole labor market.

The Anthropic Economic Index connector lets you ask Claude questions about the Index’s data—for example, which occupations use AI most or what tasks teachers use Claude for. Enable it from the connector directory in claude.ai; Anthropic says it needs no installation and works in any conversation with any Claude model. The connector is a conversational way to explore the data, not a replacement for the Index or a measure of the entire labor market.

What the connector does

The connector links a Claude conversation to Anthropic Economic Index data. You can ask a question in ordinary language, follow up to narrow the subject, and ask Claude to show the underlying data. Anthropic says the answers are grounded directly in Index data and that Claude will point to source data and its limitations.

The Index itself is a separate resource: its website offers interactive visualizations and downloadable data. The connector changes how you query the information; the available evidence does not establish that it uses a separate dataset.

How to enable it and ask questions

  1. Open claude.ai and open the connectors menu.
  2. Find Anthropic Economic Index in the connector directory and enable it. Directory labels and availability may change, so check the current listing.
  3. In a conversation, start with a broad question about an occupation, industry, or place. Examples from Anthropic include “Which occupations use AI the most?”, “What are the most common ways people in Colorado use Claude?” and “What sorts of tasks do teachers use Claude for?”
  4. Ask follow-up questions to narrow the result, then ask Claude to show the underlying data so you can inspect what supports its answer.

Anthropic says the connector works in any conversation with any Claude model and requires nothing to install. The announcement does not report a connector-specific user count, adoption rate, or measured economic impact.

What the Economic Index measures

The Index organizes views around Claude usage, occupations, and geographies. Its dashboard lists measures such as usage per capita, share of usage, share of parent-geography usage, AI autonomy, task success, multitasking, education years, and comparisons of human-only and human-with-AI time. Occupations are grouped using the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET classification; geography views include global, country, and state or province levels. The dashboard was last updated June 26, 2026.

Those measures describe patterns in Anthropic’s data about Claude use. The Index’s initial methodology describes using Anthropic’s Clio analysis tool to categorize anonymized Claude conversations against O*NET occupational tasks. It is analysis of observed use, not a survey asking workers how they use AI and not a forecast of future adoption.

How to interpret results without overclaiming

  • It is not a labor-market census. Anthropic says the Index reflects patterns in Claude usage, not the labor market as a whole. Results should not be treated as a count of all workers, all AI use, or the prevalence of a task across an occupation.
  • Check the release behind a statistic. Anthropic’s January 15, 2026 report introduced five economic primitives: task complexity, skill level, purpose (work, education, or personal use), AI autonomy, and success. It analyzed conversations from November 2025, predominantly using Claude Sonnet 4.5. The June 26, 2026 report describes subsequent pipeline changes, including higher-rate sampling, a classifier labeling conversation output, and more granular monthly data for Claude conversations and first-party API traffic. Definitions and samples can differ between releases, so do not combine figures unless the underlying measures and periods are comparable.
  • Keep figures attached to their context. For example, Anthropic’s January 2026 report says tasks covered by Claude required an average of 14.4 years of education, compared with 13.2 years for the economy’s average. That is a finding from the report’s November 2025 sample, not a result of using the connector or a current estimate for every occupation.
  • Use the data view that fits the question. A conversational answer can help you explore a topic; the Index dashboard and downloadable data are better suited to inspecting visualizations or examining data directly. For comparisons between Claude conversations and first-party API traffic, use the same dated release and its stated definitions.

Sources for checking a result

For a conversational answer, ask Claude to show the underlying data and then check the release and definitions attached to it. The dashboard lists its available measures and geographies; Anthropic’s reports explain methodology and changes over time.
