Excel speedruns turn spreadsheet fluency into a performance: creators race through tasks, teach keyboard techniques, and build obstacle courses that viewers can watch or try themselves. The appeal goes beyond raw speed. These challenges make hidden Excel skills visible, while the broader scene includes formal competitions and imaginative projects that use spreadsheets as a creative medium.
What makes Excel speedruns fun to watch?
A speedrun gives viewers a clear task and a visible measure of progress: move through a workbook, complete a set of operations, and see how quickly—and often how accurately—the participant finishes. An obstacle course adds a sequence of spreadsheet challenges, making navigation, formulas, and other skills part of a timed route. Creators can compare completion times or show different ways to solve the same task.

Drew Koontz of Encyclopedia Excel described that competitive appeal in a WIRED report by Miles Klee, published August 19, 2026: “The obstacle courses and speedruns have added another layer to that since you can directly compare times, find better ways to accomplish the same task, and directly compete against each other.” Ryan Park, who makes Excel Obstacle Course material, told Klee that watching mouse-free work can also be soothing for some viewers. Those are creators’ accounts of the format’s appeal, not survey findings.

Dan Kidney turns practice into a course
According to Klee’s WIRED report, Dan Kidney developed Excel skills as an insurance data analyst and while building an ecommerce business. He began posting videos about beginner functions on TikTok, then made an obstacle-course speedrun. The report says that clip reached one million views within days and attributes a combined 300,000 Instagram and TikTok followers to his Functional Excel accounts. These are figures reported in the article, not independently audited platform statistics.

- Over 215 Microsoft Windows Excel Shortcuts
- Two-Sided Durable Laminiated Sheet
- Designed for Excel on a Windows Computer
Kidney also told the report that a teacher in rural Germany used his templates for student practice and a class competition. The example captures a useful feature of these courses: a task can be entertainment for an audience and structured practice for someone learning Excel.
Shortcuts become visible skills
Jonathan Tristan, a Los Angeles creator known as Your Finance Brother and described by Klee as a former investment banker, teaches keyboard combinations and mouse-free navigation. The report attributes roughly 700,000 followers to him. He says a common workflow is to switch between Escape and F2 to inspect what a formula is doing. His advice is to move around Excel without relying on the mouse; it is a creator’s teaching approach, not a requirement for using the software.

- Instant Copilot. Unlock new possibilities with the dedicated Copilot key, which gives you instant access to experiences that can enhance your productivity¹.
- Enhance your experience With the new microphone mute key and snipping key
- Full keyboard experience. Features a full mechanical keyset, backlit keys, and a large trackpad for precise navigation and control. Optimal key spacing allows fast, fluid typing.
- Slim and compact Performs like a traditional, full-size keyboard.
- Clicks in place instantly Use in combination with the Surface Pro (11th Edition), Pro 9 and Pro 8* kickstand for a perfect laptop experience anywhere.
Tristan also says he tells viewers to “Pop the F1 key off your keyboard,” because it sits between Escape and F2 and can open Help if hit by mistake. That is his personal workaround, not general advice to alter a keyboard. He also made a rhetorical comparison that a 10 percent speed gain across ten hours of Excel work could mean five rather than six hours of sleep; the report does not establish this as a measured productivity result.
Gamification gives shortcuts a purpose
Park’s background correcting and reorganizing 401(k) data helps explain why speed and accuracy feature in his teaching. He compares shortcuts to video-game abilities: “That’s how I view the shortcuts I teach—they are the ‘special moves’ of Excel.” Klee’s report attributes around 300,000 followers to Park’s Excel Obstacle Course work and says Park estimates his gamified tutorials have helped tens of thousands of people. Both audience figures and the estimate are reported claims, not audited measures.

Is Excel competition only about speed?
No. Timed courses make improvement easy to see, but the report also describes Excel as a medium for elaborate creative projects. Koontz points to engineer George Lungu’s Excel Unusual work, including flight simulators, physics engines, roller coasters, and planet simulations. Those projects belong to a different strand of the culture: they showcase what people can build in a spreadsheet, rather than how fast they can finish a prescribed task.
The report also recounts the 2025 Microsoft Excel World Championship in Las Vegas. Excel Esports, the event organizer, describes its competitions as challenges involving unusual game tasks, logic, and problem solving in Microsoft Excel. Its format is not simply a test of typing speed; participants work through challenge cases under competition rules.

How can you try an Excel obstacle course or compete?
Start with practice
Try a creator’s course or template as a practice task before treating it as a race. Focus first on understanding what each step asks you to do; then repeat it and see whether keyboard navigation or a different solution makes the work smoother. Kidney’s reported classroom example shows how a shared template can support both individual practice and a group challenge.

Check the current competition details
The official Excel Esports site lists practice cases and downloadable cases, as well as online battles and a qualification route to its championship. At the time the page was checked for Klee’s report, the organizer listed 2026 finals in Las Vegas for November 30–December 2, 2026. That schedule is time-sensitive; check the organizer’s page for current dates, qualification rules, access, case availability, and any prices before planning to participate.

Watching a speedrun, practising with a course, and entering a formal event are different levels of involvement. You can enjoy the first without competing, use the second to build fluency, or consult the organizer’s rules if you want to pursue the third.
What the follower counts do—and do not—show
The WIRED report by Miles Klee, published August 19, 2026, gives the scene a sense of scale: it attributes a combined 300,000 Instagram and TikTok followers to Functional Excel, roughly 700,000 to Tristan, and around 300,000 to Park’s Excel Obstacle Course work. It also reports a million views within days for Kidney’s obstacle-course clip. These numbers are the report’s figures; they should not be read as audited platform totals or as proof of how many people learn Excel through the videos.
The report quotes Park’s view of Excel’s staying power: “It’s like saying that pen and paper will be obsolete.” Whether or not viewers share that prediction, speedruns show why a familiar spreadsheet can remain interesting: it can be a workplace tool, a skill to practise, a game-like challenge, and a place to build something unexpected.
