Normal view does not display worksheet headers and footers; their absence there does not mean they were deleted. Microsoft says they appear in Page Layout view, Print Preview, and on printed pages. Check whether Excel is in a view that shows headers and footers
In a worksheet, choose View > Page Layout to see the header and footer areas while working. You can also select the Page Layout view button on Excel’s status bar. To return to the standard grid, choose View > Normal.

For a print-focused check, open File > Print. Print Preview shows the page as it is laid out for printing, while Page Layout view is the more convenient place to inspect or edit the worksheet areas.

- Open the relevant worksheet and choose Insert > Header & Footer. Excel switches to Page Layout view.
- Inspect the left, center, and right boxes in the header area at the top of the page, then check the corresponding boxes in the footer area at the bottom.
- Select the box you want to edit and enter or change its content.
- Use View > Normal when you are finished editing.
You can also use the worksheet’s Page Layout > Page Setup dialog and open its Header/Footer tab for custom header and footer controls. For multiple selected worksheet tabs, Microsoft documents using Page Setup to apply settings across the selected sheets. Microsoft’s header and footer instructions.

Check whether the workbook is open in Excel for the web
Excel for the web has a specific limitation: Microsoft says it cannot insert a footer and does not display a footer inserted in desktop Excel. Its page-number instructions also say page numbers cannot be inserted, viewed, or printed in the web app. Open the workbook in desktop Excel if you need to edit or use those footer or page-number features. If the header or footer is missing on only some printed pages
First printed page
In the worksheet’s Page Setup header and footer options, check whether Different First Page is enabled. That setting removes headers and footers from the first printed page, so content can appear on later pages but not the first one. Microsoft’s worksheet header and footer guidance.

Odd and even pages
If odd-numbered and even-numbered pages show different content, inspect Different Odd & Even Pages. With that option enabled, check the relevant odd-page or even-page header and footer areas rather than assuming one setting supplies both.
Fix text that looks too small or sits in the wrong place
If the content is present but prints at an unexpected size, inspect Scale with Document in the header and footer options. It controls whether header and footer text scales along with the worksheet.

For placement problems, compare the header or footer margin with the page’s top or bottom margin. The header/footer margin should be smaller than the corresponding page margin and at least as large as the printer’s minimum margin. Check the result in Print Preview. Microsoft’s page-margin guidance.

Header and footer controls for charts and chart sheets are handled through the Page Setup dialog rather than the ordinary worksheet editing route. Open Page Setup for the chart or chart sheet and inspect its header and footer options. Microsoft’s instructions distinguish chart sheets and charts from worksheets.

Quick troubleshooting order
- Not visible while editing: switch to View > Page Layout.
- Need to confirm the printed result: open File > Print.
- Visible nowhere in the web app: open the workbook in desktop Excel to check or edit footer content and page numbers.
- Missing only on the first page: inspect Different First Page.
- Different on odd and even pages: inspect Different Odd & Even Pages.
- For a chart or chart sheet: use its Page Setup controls.
- Present but misplaced or too small: check scaling, margins, and Print Preview.
