Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Excel Find and Replace is not working, first check where Excel is searching and what it is searching in. A search limited to one sheet, a formula whose displayed result is being mistaken for its text, or a restrictive match or format option can all make visible content seem unfindable. Check the criteria, test one match, and use Replace All only after confirming the result.
Excel can’t find what I’m looking for
Start with the Find dialog’s search scope and content type. In Excel, open Find or Replace and expand the options if they are hidden; the precise controls and menu layout vary by platform and version.

Check whether the search is limited to one sheet
Look at Within. If it is set to Sheet, Excel searches the current worksheet rather than every worksheet in the file. Choose Workbook when the item could be on another sheet. Microsoft documents both scope choices in its Find or replace text and numbers on a worksheet guidance.
Choose the right content type
A cell can display a calculated result while storing a formula. On the Find tab, Excel provides Formulas, Values, Notes, and Comments as search choices. On the Replace tab, only Formulas is available. That difference matters: searching for a displayed value and changing the formula that produces it are different tasks. Decide whether you need to locate the formula text or a displayed result; Replace does not offer a Values search choice.

Excel only finds some results
When Find returns some matches but misses others, review the criteria that restrict what counts as a match. On the Find or Replace options, check these settings:
- Match case: Turn this off if capitalization should not matter.
- Match entire cell contents: Turn this off if the text you seek appears inside a longer cell entry rather than occupying the whole cell.
- Format: Remove any unintended formatting criterion. A format filter can exclude cells even when their content appears to match.
Check for wildcard characters
Excel treats ? as a match for one character and * as a match for any number of characters. These can make a search broader than intended. To search for a literal question mark, asterisk, or tilde, put a tilde before it: ~?, ~*, or ~~. Microsoft documents these wildcard rules in its worksheet search guidance.
Replace All didn’t change anything—or changed too much
Before changing a large set of cells, confirm the search scope, content type, match settings, and any format criterion. Then test the criteria against an individual result.

Replace updates one occurrence at a time; Replace All changes every occurrence matching the criteria. Microsoft Support puts it plainly: “When you select Replace All, every occurrence of the criteria that you’re searching for is replaced.” If nothing changes, check that the criteria match the content Excel is searching and that the search is not limited to a different sheet or content type.

Replacing a formula with its displayed result
If your goal is to keep a formula cell’s current result but remove its formula, that is a formula-to-value conversion—not an ordinary replacement of displayed text. Microsoft warns that replacing formulas with their results permanently removes the formulas. Before proceeding, examine whether other formulas depend on those cells and make a copy of the workbook. See Microsoft’s instructions for replacing a formula with its result in Excel.
Searching for links to another workbook
If the missing text is an external workbook reference rather than ordinary cell content, Microsoft documents searching workbook formulas to locate those references. Use the workbook-wide scope and look in formulas; see Manage workbook links for the related guidance.

When Excel’s controls look different
The documented search options apply across Microsoft’s Excel guidance for Windows, Mac, and the web, but their presentation and menu paths are not identical. Look for the Find or Replace dialog’s options and verify the actual setting names in your version rather than assuming every platform displays them in the same place. The key distinctions are the same: current sheet versus workbook, formula versus displayed value, partial versus whole-cell match, case sensitivity, formatting criteria, and wildcard interpretation.
