Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor building or editing charts and PivotTables inside a workbook, Copilot in Excel is the better-supported choice today. Excel Canvas is described as a forthcoming way to create a report view that updates when workbook data changes, but as of October 4, 2026, its worldwide rollout was still expected for late October. The available sources do not establish that either option produces more accurate or polished reports.
What is the difference between Copilot in Excel and Excel Canvas?
Copilot in Excel works with the workbook: Microsoft documents it for analyzing data and making worksheet changes, including generating formulas and data, charts, PivotTables, and shapes. It can also help identify trends and outliers, and sort, filter, or format data. Microsoft says Copilot-created charts and PivotTables can remain editable and linked to their source data. Microsoft’s Copilot overview describes these workflows.

Excel Canvas is described in an October 2, 2026 Microsoft 365 Message Center announcement reproduced by a third-party archive. It is presented as a Copilot capability that turns workbook data into a report with visualizations, metrics, and insights, with automatic updates when the underlying workbook data changes. The announcement also describes refining the report with natural-language instructions. The archive says worldwide availability is expected by late October 2026, so Canvas should be treated as announced rather than generally available on October 4. The archived announcement does not establish its final feature set, licensing, supported platforms, or rollout completion.
Excel Canvas is not the same feature as Copilot in Power Apps canvas apps, which is a separate Power Apps capability for asking questions about app data. Microsoft Learn’s canvas apps documentation covers that product.

Which one should you choose?
| Your priority | Better-supported choice | Why and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Build or edit charts and PivotTables in a workbook | Copilot in Excel | Microsoft documents these tasks and says generated charts and PivotTables can be editable and linked to source data. |
| Ask questions about data, or look for summaries, trends, and outliers | Copilot in Excel | Microsoft documents analysis and insight workflows. Check the output before relying on it. |
| Review an approach before the assistant changes a workbook | Copilot plan mode | Microsoft describes plan mode as a structured approach that users can review and confirm before work begins. |
| Get a report view that updates when workbook data changes | Excel Canvas, once available to you | The archived announcement describes this behavior, but its rollout was prospective as of October 4, 2026; implementation details remain to be confirmed. |
| Keep analysis in the conversation rather than change the workbook | Copilot chat mode | Microsoft describes chat as keeping responses in the conversation; it is distinct from direct workbook edits. |

How to use Copilot in Excel for a report
1. Confirm you have access
Copilot may be unavailable if your subscription does not include it or your organization’s settings prevent its use. Owning Excel alone does not guarantee access. The Canvas announcement does not settle Canvas’s final license or tenant requirements. See Microsoft’s Copilot overview and the Canvas announcement archive.

- Enhance your experience With the new microphone mute key and snipping key
- Full keyboard experience. Features a full mechanical keyset, backlit keys, and a large trackpad for precise navigation and control. Optimal key spacing allows fast, fluid typing.
- Slim and compact Performs like a traditional, full-size keyboard.
- Clicks in place instantly Use in combination with the Surface Pro (11th Edition), Pro 9 and Pro 8* kickstand for a perfect laptop experience anywhere.
2. Ask for a specific report element
Name the view or analysis you need and the dimensions to include. Microsoft gives examples such as asking for a PivotTable or a line chart showing change over time; its guidance also suggests specifying details such as sales by month and category. You can ask for sorting, filtering, or highlighting as part of the task. See Microsoft’s guide to visualizing data with Copilot.
3. Select the interaction mode that fits
- Edit: Use this when you want Copilot to make changes in the workbook.
- Plan: Use this when you want to review a proposed sequence before work begins.
- Chat: Use this when you want analysis or responses to stay in the conversation.
Microsoft explains these modes in its Copilot FAQ.
4. Check which sources Copilot can access
Copilot’s possible data sources include web, work, and federated sources, but availability depends on the user’s product and permissions. Microsoft describes work search for commercial Copilot customers as requiring approval of specific work sources. Federated connectors require consent, use the user’s credentials and permissions, and may be restricted by administrators. Details are in Microsoft’s Copilot data sources documentation. Do not assume that every report element carries source-level citations: Microsoft says responses using web or work sources may include citations, while a separate direct-answer analysis experience can return static output.

5. Verify the report before sharing it
Microsoft warns that generated insights and formulas can be inaccurate or inappropriate. Its FAQ says: “Review, edit, and verify anything Copilot creates before you rely on it.” Check the source ranges, formulas, totals, time periods, units, chart labels, and whether any narrative conclusions follow from the underlying data. These checks are especially important before a report informs a decision or is shared outside your team. See the Microsoft Copilot FAQ.
Do not confuse direct-answer analysis with an editable report
Microsoft documents a separate Copilot direct-answer analysis experience that does not modify the workbook and may return static tables or image visualizations that cannot be refreshed. That limitation applies to this specific experience; it should not be generalized to every Copilot-created chart or PivotTable, which Microsoft says can be editable and linked to source data. Read Microsoft’s direct answers documentation for details.

What is still unknown about Excel Canvas?
The available description of Canvas comes from a third-party archive reproducing a Microsoft 365 Message Center announcement, rather than a primary Microsoft product page. As of October 4, 2026, the stated late-October worldwide rollout was a prospective date, not proof that the feature was live or available to every user. The cited material does not establish final licensing, supported platforms, feature details, or actual rollout status. Check official Microsoft release information for current availability before making a decision.
