If Excel shows numbers across the column headings instead of letters, the worksheet is using R1C1 reference style. Turn off that setting to restore the usual A1 headings, such as A, B and C. The steps differ slightly between Windows and Mac.

Excel’s default reference style, A1, names columns with letters and rows with numbers. R1C1 names both with numbers: for example, R2C2 means row 2, column 2. It can also express a relative location, such as R[-2]C for the cell two rows above in the same column. Microsoft notes that R1C1 can be useful in macros that calculate row and column positions.
