Excel cells are white or disappearing bug – how to fix

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Excel cells can sometimes look white, blank, or as if they have disappeared even when the data is still there. This can happen because of simple formatting choices, hidden rows or columns, disabled gridlines, unusual view settings, or a temporary display glitch.

In other cases, the problem comes from hardware graphics acceleration, outdated Office files, graphics drivers, or a damaged Excel configuration. The safest approach is to start with quick checks such as font color, fill color, zoom, and hidden content, then move on to graphics, update, and repair fixes if the worksheet still does not display correctly.

Check Cell Formatting, Font Color, and Fill Color

When Excel cells look white, blank, or as if the contents have disappeared, start by checking the formatting. In many cases, the data is still there, but the cell text, fill, or number format makes it invisible. Click one of the affected cells and look at the formula bar. If the value appears in the formula bar but not in the worksheet grid, the problem is usually formatting rather than lost data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, check whether the font color matches the cell background. For example, white text on a white fill will make numbers and words appear missing. Select the affected range, go to the Home tab, open the Font Color menu, and choose Automatic or a visible color such as black. Then open the Fill Color menu and choose No Fill or another contrasting color. This is especially common in files copied from other workbooks, downloaded reports, or spreadsheets with conditional formatting.

Next, inspect the number format. A custom number format can hide cell values even though the data remains in the worksheet. Select the cells, press Ctrl + 1 to open Format Cells, and check the Number tab. If the category is set to Custom, look for formats such as ;;;, which hides positive numbers, negative numbers, zeros, and text. Change the category to General or Number, then click OK. If the content reappears, the cells were hidden by formatting.

Conditional formatting can also make cells appear blank or blend into the background. Select the affected area, then go to Home > Conditional Formatting > Manage Rules. In the rules manager, change the dropdown to This Worksheet to see all active rules. Look for rules that set the font color to white, apply a white fill, or use icon sets and data bars in a way that obscures values. You can edit suspicious rules or choose Clear Rules for the selected cells if you do not need them.

  • Check the formula bar: If the value shows there, the cell is not empty.
  • Set Font Color to Automatic: This quickly fixes white-on-white text.
  • Set Fill Color to No Fill: This removes background colors that may hide content.
  • Change the number format to General: This removes custom formats that can suppress display.
  • Review conditional formatting: Rules can override normal font and fill settings.

If you are unsure which formatting setting is causing the issue, try clearing formats from a small test range. Select a few affected cells, go to Home > Clear > Clear Formats. This keeps the values and formulas but removes font colors, fills, borders, number formats, and conditional formatting from the selected cells. Avoid using Clear All unless you want to delete the cell contents too.

Turn Off Hardware Graphics Acceleration

If Excel cells look white, flicker, fail to repaint, or appear to disappear when you scroll, switch sheets, resize the window, or use an external monitor, the problem may be related to graphics rendering rather than the worksheet data itself. Excel uses your graphics hardware to draw parts of the interface more smoothly, but some GPU drivers, docking stations, remote desktop sessions, or multi-monitor setups can cause visual glitches. Turning off hardware graphics acceleration forces Office to render the workbook in a more conservative way, which often fixes blank cells, white blocks, missing grid areas, and delayed screen refreshes.

Try this setting after you have confirmed that the cells are not simply formatted with white text, white fill, custom number formats, or conditional formatting. Hardware acceleration issues usually have a distinctive pattern: the data is still there in the formula bar, the cells may reappear after clicking or zooming, and the problem may affect only part of the sheet or only certain workbooks. It can also happen more often after a Windows update, a graphics driver update, or when using Excel on a laptop connected to a high-resolution display.

  1. Open Excel.
  2. Select File in the top-left corner.
  3. Choose Options.
  4. Select Advanced from the left-side menu.
  5. Scroll to the Display section.
  6. Enable Disable hardware graphics acceleration, if the option is available.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Close Excel completely, then reopen the workbook and test scrolling, selecting cells, and switching sheets.

In newer Microsoft 365 builds, this exact checkbox may not appear because Microsoft has changed how Office handles graphics rendering in some versions. If you do not see it, look for related display settings such as Optimize for compatibility under File > Options > General, especially if Excel looks wrong on a scaled or external display. After changing the setting, restart Excel so the rendering mode is fully refreshed.

If the cells stop disappearing after disabling acceleration, leave the setting off for stability. The tradeoff is usually minor: animations or scrolling may feel slightly less smooth, but worksheet visibility is more reliable. If there is no improvement, turn the setting back on and continue with other display-related fixes, such as changing the zoom level, switching between Normal and Page Layout view, maximizing the Excel window, or updating your graphics driver. For users on remote desktops or virtual machines, also test Excel outside the remote session if possible, since remote rendering can create similar blank-cell behavior.

Unhide Rows, Columns, Sheets, and Gridlines

If Excel cells look white, blank, or missing, the data may not be gone at all. Rows, columns, worksheets, or gridlines can be hidden intentionally, by a copied template, by a macro, or by a setting saved with the workbook. This is especially common when row numbers or column letters skip, when only part of the sheet is visible, or when the worksheet looks like a plain white canvas with no cell borders.

Check for hidden rows and columns

Start by looking at the row and column headers. If the row numbers jump from 5 to 20, rows 6 through 19 are hidden. If the column letters jump from B to G, columns C through F are hidden. To restore them, select the rows or columns around the gap, then use the Excel ribbon or right-click menu to unhide them.

  1. Select the rows above and below the missing area, or select the columns on both sides of the missing area.
  2. Right-click the selected row numbers or column letters.
  3. Choose Unhide.

To unhide everything on the active sheet, click the triangle in the upper-left corner of the worksheet, where the row and column headers meet. This selects the whole sheet. Then right-click any row number and choose Unhide, and repeat with any column letter. You can also use Home > Format > Hide & Unhide > Unhide Rows or Unhide Columns.

Unhide worksheets

If an entire tab seems to have disappeared, the sheet may be hidden. Look along the bottom of the Excel window where the worksheet tabs appear. Right-click any visible sheet tab and select Unhide. If the command is available, choose the missing worksheet from the list and click OK. If Unhide is greyed out, there may be no normally hidden sheets, though a workbook can still contain “very hidden” sheets created through VBA. In that case, the file may need to be checked by someone comfortable using the Visual Basic Editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn gridlines back on

Sometimes the cells have not disappeared, but the gridlines are turned off or covered by white fill. This can make the worksheet look empty, especially on a white background. Go to the View tab and make sure Gridlines is checked. You can also open the Page Layout tab and confirm that Gridlines > View is enabled.

  • If gridlines return after enabling the setting, the issue was only a worksheet view option.
  • If gridlines still do not appear, select the affected range and go to Home > Fill Color > No Fill.
  • If printed output is also missing lines, use Borders instead of relying on screen gridlines, because gridlines and borders are separate features.

Also check whether panes are frozen or the sheet is split, since these settings can make it seem as if rows or columns have vanished while you are scrolling. On the View tab, choose Freeze Panes > Unfreeze Panes, and turn off Split if it is active. After that, press Ctrl + Home to jump back to the top-left area of the used sheet and confirm that the missing cells are visible again.

Fix Display Issues by Changing Zoom, View, or Window Settings

If Excel cells look white, blank, clipped, or seem to vanish only while you are scrolling, resizing the window, or switching between monitors, the workbook may be fine and the issue may be caused by how Excel is rendering the sheet on screen. Before changing formulas or deleting formatting, try refreshing the worksheet view. Click another sheet tab and return, minimize and restore Excel, or press Ctrl + S to save and then close and reopen the workbook. These simple actions often force Excel to redraw cells that failed to display correctly.

Next, adjust the zoom level. A corrupted or awkward zoom state can make gridlines, text, borders, or filled cells appear uneven, especially on high-resolution displays. Go to View > Zoom, choose 100%, and click OK. You can also use the zoom slider in the bottom-right corner of Excel. If the sheet is already at 100%, move it to 90% or 110%, then back to 100%. This small change can refresh the rendering engine and make missing cell content appear again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try switching workbook views

Excel has several worksheet views, and display problems can occur when a file opens in a view that does not suit the current layout or monitor. Open the View tab and switch between Normal, Page Layout, and Page Break Preview. For regular editing, use Normal. If cells look blank in Page Layout view but appear correctly in Normal view, the issue is probably related to page rendering, printer settings, margins, or scaling rather than missing data.

  • Normal: Best for editing and checking whether data is actually present.
  • Page Layout: Useful for print layout, but more likely to expose display glitches on large sheets.
  • Page Break Preview: Can make areas outside the print range look different or dimmed.

Also check the window layout options. On the View tab, select Unfreeze Panes if frozen rows or columns make it seem like part of the sheet has disappeared. If the workbook opens in mulle panes, click Split to turn off split view. Use Arrange All if workbook windows are positioned off-screen or stacked strangely. If you use multiple monitors, drag Excel fully onto one screen, maximize it, and test again. Moving between displays with different scaling settings can cause temporary blank areas or white blocks in the grid.

Finally, check Windows display scaling if the problem appears across several workbooks. Right-click the desktop, open Display settings, and review Scale and Display resolution. Use the recommended resolution and a standard scale such as 100%, 125%, or 150%. After changing these settings, close and reopen Excel. If the worksheet displays normally after zoom, view, or window changes, the cells were not deleted; Excel was simply failing to paint the grid correctly on your current display setup.

Update Excel, Office, and Graphics Drivers

If cells still look white, blank, or appear to vanish after checking formatting, hidden rows, zoom, and view settings, the issue may be caused by an outdated Excel build, a Microsoft Office bug, or a graphics driver problem. Excel relies heavily on Windows display components and the graphics driver to draw gridlines, cell fills, fonts, selections, and scrolling behavior. When any of those components are out of date, the worksheet may not repaint correctly, especially on large workbooks, external monitors, high-DPI displays, or systems using integrated and dedicated graphics together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Excel through Microsoft Office

Start by updating Excel from inside Office. Open Excel, then go to File > Account. Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now. If updates are available, let Office install them, then close and reopen Excel. This can fix known rendering bugs, crashes, blank worksheet areas, and problems introduced by older Office builds.

If you do not see Update Options, your Office installation may be managed by your organization, installed through the Microsoft Store, or using a volume license. In that case, check Settings > Windows Update, open the Microsoft Store and update apps from the Library page, or contact your IT administrator. For work or school devices, Excel updates may be controlled by a company update channel, so the newest fix might need to be approved before it appears on your PC.

Install Windows updates

Next, update Windows because Excel depends on system-level display, font, printer, and graphics components. Go to Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install all available quality updates and restart the computer, even if Windows does not request it immediately. Optional updates can also matter for display stability, so check Advanced options > Optional updates for driver or platform updates supplied through Windows Update.

Update the graphics driver

A faulty or outdated graphics driver is one of the most common causes of Excel display glitches, including white cells, missing grid areas, flickering, black blocks, delayed scrolling, and content that reappears only after resizing the window. You can update the driver from Device Manager by right-clicking Start, choosing Device Manager, expanding Display adapters, right-clicking your graphics device, and selecting Update driver. Choose Search automatically for drivers first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For better results, download the latest driver directly from the manufacturer, especially if you use Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD graphics. Laptop users should also check the support page for their exact Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, or Microsoft Surface model, because manufacturer-provided drivers may include fixes for external monitors, docking stations, and hybrid graphics. After installing the driver, restart the PC and test Excel again with the same workbook.

  • Intel graphics: check Intel Driver & Support Assistant or your PC maker’s support site.
  • NVIDIA graphics: update through NVIDIA App, GeForce Experience, or the NVIDIA driver download page.
  • AMD graphics: update through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or the AMD support page.
  • Docking stations: update dock firmware and display drivers if the issue happens mainly on external monitors.

After updating, open Excel and test a few actions that previously triggered the problem: scrolling, switching sheets, changing zoom, selecting large ranges, and moving Excel between monitors. If the cells now display normally, the problem was likely tied to a rendering bug fixed by an Office, Windows, or graphics update. If the issue remains, the next step is to repair Office or reset Excel settings to remove damaged program files or corrupted configuration data.

Repair Microsoft Office or Reset Excel Settings

If Excel still shows white cells, blank worksheets, missing content, or disappearing grid areas after checking formatting, view settings, acceleration, and updates, the problem may be in the Office installation or in Excel’s saved configuration. Damaged program files, broken add-ins, corrupted custom settings, or a bad workbook startup file can make Excel render worksheets incorrectly even when the data is still present.

Repair Microsoft Office from Windows settings

Start with a built-in Office repair. This keeps your documents intact and reinstalls or replaces damaged Office components. Close Excel and other Office apps first, then open Settings in Windows and go to Apps > Installed apps. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, select the three-dot menu or modify option, and choose Modify. Run Quick Repair first because it is faster and does not usually require an internet connection.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Quick Repair does not fix the issue, repeat the same steps and choose Online Repair. This takes longer and may reinstall Office components, but it is more thorough. After the repair finishes, restart the computer, open Excel, and test a workbook that previously showed blank or white cells. If the workbook displays normally, the issue was likely caused by damaged Office files rather than the spreadsheet itself.

Start Excel in Safe Mode and disable add-ins

Excel add-ins can interfere with drawing, worksheet display, formulas, and workbook loading. To test this, press Windows + R, type excel /safe, and press Enter. If the workbook looks correct in Safe Mode, disable add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins, click Go, clear the checkboxes, and restart Excel. Re-enable add-ins one at a time until the white-cell or disappearing-content problem returns.

Reset Excel startup files and custom settings

Excel can load hidden templates, macros, or files automatically from startup folders. If one of these files is damaged, every workbook may appear incorrectly. Check the XLSTART folder by opening File Explorer and entering %appdata%\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART in the address bar. Move any files in that folder to a temporary location, then reopen Excel. Also check whether a custom startup folder is set in File > Options > Advanced under At startup, open all files in; clear that field if it points to an old or suspicious folder.

If Excel still behaves incorrectly, you can reset user-specific Excel preferences by renaming Excel’s registry settings. This is more advanced, so create a restore point first. Close Excel, press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office, open the folder for your Office version, and locate Excel. Rename the Excel key to something like Excel.old, then reopen Excel so it can rebuild default settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use repair first: Quick Repair and Online Repair are safer than resetting advanced settings.
  • Test in Safe Mode: a normal display in Safe Mode usually points to an add-in or startup item.
  • Back up settings: before changing registry keys, export them or create a Windows restore point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Excel cells look blank even though the formula bar shows data?

This usually means the content is still there but is being hidden by formatting. Check whether the font color is set to white, the cell has a white fill, or a custom number format such as ;;; is hiding values. Select the affected cells, go to the Home tab, and reset the font color, fill color, and number format to General.

How do I fix Excel cells turning white or disappearing when I scroll?

This is often a display rendering problem rather than lost data. Try changing the zoom level, switching between Normal and Page Layout view, or minimizing and restoring the Excel window. If it keeps happening, disable hardware graphics acceleration in Excel options and update your graphics driver.

Can hidden rows or columns make it look like Excel cells disappeared?

Yes, hidden rows, hidden columns, filtered data, or hidden sheets can make parts of a workbook seem missing. Select the surrounding rows or columns, right-click, and choose Unhide, then check the Data tab for active filters. Also right-click the sheet tabs at the bottom to see whether any worksheets are hidden.

What should I do if gridlines are gone and the sheet looks like a blank white page?

First, check whether gridlines are turned off by going to the View tab and enabling Gridlines. Also check if the cells have a white fill color, because filled cells can hide gridlines. If the whole worksheet looks unusual, switch back to Normal view and reset the zoom to 100%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I repair Office or reset Excel settings?

Repair Office if the problem happens in mulle workbooks, returns after restarting Excel, or affects other Office apps. Use Windows Settings to run a Quick Repair first, then try Online Repair if needed. If Excel still opens with strange display behavior, you can also test it in Safe Mode or reset Excel preferences and add-ins.

Bottom Line

When Excel cells look white, blank, or seem to disappear, the cause is usually a display glitch, accidental formatting, hidden rows or columns, frozen panes, filters, or a graphics acceleration issue. Start with the quick checks first: zoom/view settings, font and fill color, filters, hidden content, and restarting Excel.

If the problem keeps coming back, move on to disabling hardware graphics acceleration, updating your graphics driver, opening Excel in Safe Mode, repairing Office, or installing the latest updates. Work through the fixes in order, and you should be able to tell whether the issue is with the workbook, Excel settings, or your system display setup.
