Use Excel’s regular Hide command when workbook users should be able to restore a support sheet from the Unhide dialog. Use VBA’s xlSheetVeryHidden only when you need to keep the sheet out of that dialog and have a documented way for a maintainer to restore it. Neither option protects confidential information.
Choose the right visibility setting
| Setting | What users see | How to restore the sheet | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hidden | The sheet tab is removed from view. | A user can select it in Excel’s Unhide dialog. Microsoft’s Hide or Unhide worksheets guidance explains the standard interface. | Support data that should stay out of the way but remain easy for workbook users to restore. |
| VeryHidden | The sheet is omitted from the normal Unhide dialog. | A maintainer must change the sheet’s visibility property in VBA or the VBA editor. | Support data that should not appear in the standard Unhide interface, with a clear maintainer recovery route. |
Microsoft defines the VBA visibility values as xlSheetVisible (-1), xlSheetHidden (0), and xlSheetVeryHidden (2) in its XlSheetVisibility enumeration. Both hidden states are visibility controls, not security boundaries.

Hide a worksheet through Excel’s interface
- Give the sheet a functional name, such as
Backend,LookupData, orConfig. - Right-click the sheet tab and choose Hide. The sheet disappears from the tab row.
- To bring it back, right-click any visible sheet tab, choose Unhide, select the sheet, and confirm.
Microsoft notes that hidden worksheet data can still be referenced by other sheets and workbooks. Hiding the tab therefore does not prevent users from accessing or using its contents through workbook features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake a worksheet VeryHidden with VBA
Use xlSheetVeryHidden when omitting the sheet from the standard Unhide dialog is useful and a workbook maintainer is responsible for recovery. For a sheet named Backend, this statement sets that state:

- ABIS BOOK
ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Backend").Visible = xlSheetVeryHidden
To restore the tab, set the same property to xlSheetVisible:
ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Backend").Visible = xlSheetVisible
Microsoft’s Hide sheets and use xlVeryHidden constant in a macro documents the macro approach and notes that a workbook must keep at least one worksheet visible.
Document the recovery path
For a workbook others maintain, leave a short note describing what the support sheet contains and how to restore it. For a normally hidden sheet, point to the Unhide command. For a VeryHidden sheet, identify the VBA property that must be changed and who is expected to do it. These notes help prevent a useful backend sheet from becoming an unexplained dead end.
What hiding does not do
- It does not make worksheet content confidential. Do not rely on Hidden or VeryHidden to protect passwords, personal data, or other sensitive information.
- VeryHidden does not mean permanently inaccessible; it means the standard Excel interface cannot make the sheet visible through Unhide.
- A workbook cannot have every worksheet hidden; at least one must remain visible.
Check the workbook’s actual environment
Test the chosen setting in the Excel edition and deployment environment where the workbook will be used, especially if restoration depends on VBA. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for every platform, file format, macro policy, or third-party spreadsheet application.
