To start live streaming on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it is eligible, choose a streaming method, and test your audio, video, and internet upload capacity before going public. You can start with a phone or computer webcam; an encoder is useful when you want to stream gameplay, share a screen, or add production elements. You do not need expensive equipment for every kind of broadcast.
How do I start live streaming on YouTube?
- Check eligibility. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements.
- Choose your method. Use mobile for a quick update away from your desk, a webcam for a straightforward computer-camera broadcast, an encoder for gameplay or screen sharing, or a console’s built-in streaming workflow for console gameplay.
- Enable live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s help pages. Allow for that wait before scheduling a first broadcast.
- Prepare and test. Check your upload bandwidth, frame and sound quality, stream destination, and privacy settings. For an encoder event, YouTube recommends preparing two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Go live and monitor. For encoder streams, start sending the signal, check the Live Control Room preview, then go live in YouTube when ready. Monitor audio and video during the broadcast.
What do I need to live stream on YouTube?
The essentials depend on the method. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary; the equipment you already have may be enough. Its encoder guide describes webcams, microphones, and headphones as gear many streamers use, not universal prerequisites.

| Method | Good fit | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Vlogging and quick updates while away from a desk | Mobile has extra eligibility and supported-device requirements; see the next section. |
| Webcam | A simple computer-camera broadcast | A computer with a webcam. YouTube describes this as a quick way to go live. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video | Encoder software or hardware, plus YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. It offers more production control. |
| Console | Direct console gameplay | Follow the current instructions from your console maker; YouTube points users to the device manual. |
For the computer-camera route, an optional webcam for live streaming can provide a camera if your computer does not have one. For an encoder setup, a USB microphone for streaming or headphones for streaming may suit your audio needs, but neither is required for every broadcast. A phone tripod for live streaming can make mobile filming steadier; it is a practical accessory, not a YouTube requirement.

Yes, if your channel and device meet YouTube’s mobile requirements. YouTube’s mobile guidance lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and live-stream activation. It also lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later for supported phones and tablets. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. These are mobile-specific conditions, not a subscriber threshold for every way of streaming.

Do I need 50 subscribers to live stream on YouTube?
No—not for every method. YouTube lists 50 subscribers as a requirement for mobile live streaming. Its general live-streaming guidance instead lists channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. Check the current rules for the method you plan to use: general live-streaming requirements and mobile requirements.

Do I need a webcam or encoder?
No. Choose based on what you want to show. A webcam is a direct route for speaking to camera from a computer. An encoder is better suited to gameplay, screen capture, overlays, or external audio and video equipment. A phone or console may be the simpler option for other content. YouTube describes a webcam, microphone, and headphones as common encoder equipment, not mandatory gear for all creators.

How do I set up an encoder stream?
- Enable live streaming. If this is your first time, account activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream.
- Configure the encoder. Copy the stream server URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm the signal appears in Live Control Room and inspect picture, sound, and event accessibility before going live.
- Go live, then end the event cleanly. Use YouTube’s Live Control Room workflow to go live, and stop the encoder when the broadcast is over. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder setup guidance for current details.
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Confirm the event appears where expected, including on channel or watch pages and mobile, and monitor audio and video throughout. If you use a failover encoder, test that playback switches to it.

How much upload speed do I need?
Plan around upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping the combined streaming bitrate below the available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. A busy shared connection can reduce what is available to your stream, and upload speed may be lower than download speed. Check outbound speed on the connection you will use, and account for the total bitrate—including a backup stream, if applicable—rather than judging by a download-speed result alone. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I stream vertically or horizontally?
Choose the format that suits the viewing experience you want. YouTube’s current help describes vertical live streams as eligible to appear in the Shorts feed and as offering a mobile full-screen experience; eligibility does not guarantee discovery or viewers. Horizontal and vertical formats do not have identical features. Live Control Room’s documented workflow includes horizontal and vertical outputs, with layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Availability and controls may vary, so check YouTube’s current vertical live-stream guidance and your account before planning a specific layout or simultaneous output.

What rules and safety checks should I know?
All live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube may remove streams or restrict live-streaming access. Review the current live-stream rules, use an appropriate audience and privacy setting, and make sure you have the rights to the material you broadcast. Do not use another channel to evade an active live-stream restriction.
Common first-stream problems and fixes
- Live streaming is not available yet: Verify the channel, check for restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. If using mobile, confirm you meet its additional eligibility rules.
- The encoder preview does not appear: Check that the correct stream URL and key are entered, the encoder is sending, and the selected event is open in Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.
- The broadcast buffers or disconnects: Recheck available upload bandwidth during the hours you plan to stream. Reduce the combined bitrate enough to preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and consider whether other users or devices are sharing the connection.
- Viewers cannot see or hear the stream clearly: Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, confirm the correct audio and video sources are selected in your chosen method, and monitor the stream during the event.
- The event is not visible where expected: Confirm its audience and privacy settings, then check the channel or watch page and a mobile view before the scheduled start.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a camera-broadcast setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
