Eevee has eight recognized evolutions, or Eeveelutions, and each has a different type. The broad method depends on the form: use an elemental stone, meet a friendship condition, or—in games with the classic location mechanic—level up near a special rock. Exact methods and availability can vary by game, so treat these as franchise-wide reference rules rather than instructions for every title.
All eight Eeveelutions at a glance
Eevee itself is Normal-type. Pokémon’s official Pokédex lists these eight evolved forms and their types; Pokémon’s official Eevee feature describes the commonly associated evolution triggers. The table is a quick way to answer two central questions: what type is each Eevee evolution, and what broad condition is associated with getting it?

| Eeveelution | Type | Commonly described trigger | Additional condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaporeon | Water | Use a Water Stone | None stated in the general method |
| Jolteon | Electric | Use a Thunder Stone | None stated in the general method |
| Flareon | Fire | Use a Fire Stone | None stated in the general method |
| Espeon | Psychic | Level Eevee up with high friendship during the day | In-game time must be daytime |
| Umbreon | Dark | Level Eevee up with high friendship at night | In-game time must be nighttime |
| Leafeon | Grass | Level up near a Moss Rock in games that use this location method | The game must include the relevant location mechanic |
| Glaceon | Ice | Level up near an Ice Rock in games that use this location method | The game must include the relevant location mechanic |
| Sylveon | Fairy | Level Eevee up with high friendship | Eevee must know at least one Fairy-type move |
The official Pokémon RPG explainer also describes Eevee as able to evolve into eight differently typed Pokémon, with leveling and Evolution items among the franchise’s common evolution mechanisms. The table separates the result from the trigger: knowing that a target is Grass-type, for example, does not tell you whether the game you are playing uses a rock, another method, or offers that form at all.
Think of the methods as four broad categories. Three Eeveelutions are associated with specific stone items; two share a friendship condition and are distinguished by time of day; two are associated with special locations in games that use the classic rock method; and one combines friendship with knowing a Fairy-type move. This comparison helps you identify what to verify without treating one game’s instructions as universal.

Stone evolutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon
These three forms are distinguished by the stone used: Water Stone for Vaporeon, Thunder Stone for Jolteon, and Fire Stone for Flareon. The method is an item trigger, rather than the friendship, time-of-day, or nearby-location conditions used by other Eeveelutions in the general overview.
The quick match is straightforward: choose Vaporeon when you intend to use a Water Stone, Jolteon for a Thunder Stone, or Flareon for a Fire Stone. Do not swap the names or assume that any elemental stone will produce any of the three. The official overview links each listed form to its own specific stone.
If you are following a game-specific guide, check the exact item name and instructions for that game. This reference does not establish where to find a stone, whether it is available at a particular point in the story, or the exact interface steps for using it. Those are practical details that depend on the title, so a broad franchise explanation cannot tell you where to go, what to purchase, or which menu to open.
A common planning mistake is to decide on a form but then act on a general rule without checking whether the particular game includes the relevant item and method. Another is to read a list of stone evolutions and overlook that each named stone corresponds to a different form. If you are aiming for one of these three, verify the target game’s instructions for the matching stone before using an item. The general method supplies the pairing, not a game-by-game inventory or availability guide.
Friendship and time: Espeon and Umbreon
Espeon and Umbreon share the high-friendship condition in the commonly described method; the in-game time separates them. Level Eevee up during the day for Espeon, or at night for Umbreon. “Day” and “night” refer to the game’s own time condition, so do not assume that the clock on your device alone determines which form you get.
The order of the requirements matters when you are planning. The broad method is not simply “raise friendship” and wait for one of the pair to appear: you also need a level-up, and the time condition determines which of the two forms is associated with that evolution. If your intended result is Espeon, check that the game considers it daytime when Eevee levels up. For Umbreon, check that the game considers it nighttime at that point.

The general reference does not give a numeric friendship threshold or explain how to raise friendship in each title. Those details, and how a specific game defines its day and night periods, need to be checked for the game you are playing. Do not assume that a particular number of battles, steps, or items will meet the condition; those specifics are not established by the broad method. A guide for the exact title is the appropriate place to confirm the threshold and the available ways to build friendship.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The most relevant pitfall is confusing real-world time with the in-game time rule. A game may represent time according to its own systems, so the time shown on a device is not a dependable substitute for checking the title’s condition. Another is levelling Eevee before confirming that the intended time and friendship requirements are in place. If the resulting form is not the one you planned, recheck which time condition applied at the level-up and whether the game-specific friendship requirement was met.
Location-based evolutions: Leafeon and Glaceon
The classic location method ties Leafeon to leveling up near a Moss Rock and Glaceon to leveling up near an Ice Rock. These are special-location triggers, not universal instructions: a game without those locations cannot use this particular method.
The official overview supports the classic Moss Rock and Ice Rock explanation, but it is not a game-by-game compatibility list and does not establish every later alternative. Before travelling, confirm that the specific game uses the rock method and where its relevant location is. A location from one title should not be assumed to exist in another.
For a game that does use this method, the key pieces are the intended rock, Eevee, and a level-up near the relevant location. The distinction between the rocks is important: Moss Rock is associated with Leafeon, while Ice Rock is associated with Glaceon. This is different from the stone-item method above. A Moss Rock or Ice Rock is described as a location condition, not as a stone item to use from a bag.
Do not set out on a trip based only on a location name remembered from a different Pokémon game. First confirm that the current title supports this classic method, then confirm the location and the game’s precise proximity condition. The general franchise reference does not name a route, town, dungeon, or map position, and it does not establish what later alternatives are available. Without that title-specific confirmation, a step-by-step destination would risk sending you to a place or mechanic that your game does not use.

Sylveon: friendship plus a Fairy-type move
Sylveon’s commonly described method combines two requirements: Eevee needs high friendship and must know at least one Fairy-type move when it levels up. Learning a Fairy-type move by itself is not the whole condition; the friendship requirement also applies.
That combination makes Sylveon different from Espeon and Umbreon. Those two are distinguished by the time-of-day condition in the described method; Sylveon is distinguished by the Fairy-type move condition. If Sylveon is the goal, verify both conditions before the level-up: Eevee’s friendship must meet the game’s requirement, and at least one Fairy-type move must be in its moveset at that time.
The general reference does not state a friendship number, identify a particular move, or provide game-specific steps for learning one. Check the move list and evolution rules for your title before levelling Eevee if you are aiming for Sylveon. Do not rely on the fact that Eevee learned a Fairy move at some earlier point if it no longer knows one when the relevant level-up occurs; the commonly described requirement is that it know at least one when it levels up.

If you have only confirmed one, you have not confirmed the full method. The broad rule does not tell you which Fairy-type moves Eevee can learn in a particular game, at what point they become available, or exactly how friendship is measured there. Those details need a title-specific answer rather than a guessed move name or threshold.
How to use these rules for a specific Pokémon game
These methods are a useful way to distinguish the eight forms, but they are not a substitute for the instructions in a particular game. Pokémon’s official materials describe the broad triggers; they do not establish a complete version-by-version list of locations, item availability, friendship thresholds, or later alternatives. Treat the table as a decision aid: it tells you what kind of condition to investigate, not every step needed in every release.
- Identify the exact game you are playing. Evolution methods and available options can differ between titles.
- Choose the intended Eeveelution, then match it to its trigger category in the table: a stone, friendship and time, a special location, or friendship plus a move.
- Verify that the specific method exists in that title. This is especially important for the Moss Rock and Ice Rock method, which is not universal.
- Check the condition that is easy to overlook: the correct named stone; the game’s daytime or nighttime condition; high friendship; proximity to the relevant rock; or a Fairy-type move known at the level-up.
- Only then follow the exact game-specific instructions for where to go, how to use an item, how to meet friendship requirements, or how to trigger a level-up. The broad overview does not supply those title-specific steps.
- If the expected form does not occur, recheck the condition you intended to meet—especially the time-of-day or move requirement—and consult the title-specific evolution rules rather than assuming the general method applies unchanged.
This checklist also helps distinguish between a missing condition and a missing method. For example, a location-based instruction is not useful if the title does not use that location mechanic. Similarly, knowing the broad friendship rule does not confirm how much friendship the game requires. First verify the category, then verify the implementation in the exact game.

For quick comparison, stone evolutions are the item-trigger group: Water Stone for Vaporeon, Thunder Stone for Jolteon, and Fire Stone for Flareon. Friendship plus time yields the described Espeon/Umbreon distinction: daytime for Espeon and nighttime for Umbreon. The classic special-location pair is Moss Rock for Leafeon and Ice Rock for Glaceon, but only where that mechanic is used. Sylveon’s method adds a Fairy-type move to the high-friendship level-up condition. These differences are the most useful facts to carry into a game-specific lookup.

How do I evolve Eevee into each Eeveelution?
The commonly described methods are: Water Stone for Vaporeon, Thunder Stone for Jolteon, Fire Stone for Flareon, high friendship plus a daytime level-up for Espeon, high friendship plus a nighttime level-up for Umbreon, a level-up near a Moss Rock for Leafeon and near an Ice Rock for Glaceon in games using those locations, and high friendship plus knowing a Fairy-type move at the level-up for Sylveon. Check the exact game, since methods and availability can vary.
What type is each Eevee evolution?
Vaporeon is Water, Jolteon Electric, Flareon Fire, Espeon Psychic, Umbreon Dark, Leafeon Grass, Glaceon Ice, and Sylveon Fairy. Eevee itself is Normal-type.
Are the Moss Rock and Ice Rock methods available in every Pokémon game?
No. They are classic location-based methods used in relevant games, not universal instructions. Confirm that your specific title uses the rock method and check where its relevant location is before travelling.

Does a Fairy-type move alone evolve Eevee into Sylveon?
No. The described method also requires high friendship, and Eevee must know at least one Fairy-type move when it levels up. Confirm the exact move and friendship rules for your game.
Where can I find the stones or special rocks?
The broad reference identifies which stone or rock is associated with each form, but it does not give game-specific locations, availability, or item-use steps. Check a guide for the exact title you are playing.
How much friendship does Eevee need to evolve?
The broad method describes the requirement as high friendship but does not specify a numeric threshold or how to reach it in each game. Those details vary by title, so verify them for your game.
Can I use these instructions as a walkthrough for any Pokémon game?
Use them as a franchise-wide overview, not a universal walkthrough. The exact methods available, item locations, time conditions, friendship requirements, and alternatives can depend on the game.
The Bottom Line
Eevee has eight listed evolutions, each with its own type. Match the form you want to its broad trigger—one of three named stones, friendship plus time, a classic special location, or friendship plus a Fairy-type move—then confirm the exact steps in your Pokémon game. The biggest safeguards are not to assume every title uses the Moss Rock/Ice Rock method, and not to overlook the time, friendship, or move condition for the form you want.
