Evercade Nexus vs. Evercade EXP: Which Handheld Should You Choose?

The Nexus adds a larger screen and twin analogue sticks; the original EXP offers Mini HDMI output and 18 built-in Capcom games. Here’s how to choose.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a larger screen and twin analogue sticks, wait for the Evercade Nexus; if you need Mini HDMI TV output or want 18 built-in Capcom games, the original Evercade EXP is the more distinctive option. The Nexus is scheduled to launch on October 30, 2026, at an announced price of $199.99 / £169.99. As of October 13, it has not launched, so its real-world performance and availability are not yet established. The original EXP is an older model that the consulted guide says is no longer sold new and is available second-hand.

At a glance: what separates the Nexus and original EXP?

Both handhelds belong to Evercade’s physical-cartridge ecosystem, but they solve different problems. The Nexus’s announced advantages are its 5.89-inch display, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphone support and EverSync local sharing. The original EXP stands out for its Mini HDMI output and 18 built-in Capcom games. Both support TATE mode, a portrait-oriented way to play compatible games.

The Nexus announcement also describes the compatible Evercade library as containing more than 700 retro games. Those figures are announcement-era product-library counts, not an independently audited count of games currently available for purchase. The EXP comparison here is specifically with the original EXP, not the later EXP-R; their features should not be treated as interchangeable.

Choose the Nexus if screen size and analogue control matter most

The Nexus’s announced 5.89-inch IPS screen is 1.59 inches larger diagonally than the original EXP’s 4.3-inch IPS display. That difference is the clearest reason to favor the newer handheld if you expect to play primarily on the device itself. The available specifications establish screen size, not a controlled comparison of brightness, sharpness, color, viewing angles or how comfortable either display is over a long session.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Twin analogue sticks are the Nexus’s other major hardware distinction. They give the handheld a control layout suited to games that use analogue movement or two-stick inputs. However, the announcement does not establish how every compatible game will use the sticks, and the material available before launch does not confirm performance, responsiveness or ergonomics. If a particular game or control behavior is essential to your decision, wait for post-launch confirmation rather than assuming the feature guarantees a specific experience.

Blaze has also announced wireless headphone support and EverSync local multiplayer sharing. These may matter if you want to play without a wired headset or share local play with another compatible setup. The announcement coverage does not provide enough detail to infer supported wireless standards, pairing limits, range, or the exact setup required for EverSync.

What comes with the Nexus

The announced bundle includes the physical Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. That is a specific included cartridge, not access to the entire Evercade library. The Nexus is announced as compatible with more than 80 Evercade cartridges, and additional cartridges are separate purchases. Check the exact bundle contents and regional listing when buying; the announcement does not establish that all retailers or regions will offer identical packaging.

Choose the original EXP if you need TV output or built-in Capcom games

The original EXP has a feature the Nexus announcement does not list: Mini HDMI output to a TV at 720p. If you specifically want to play on a television as well as on the handheld, that is a concrete reason to consider the EXP. The EXP guide also lists stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. By contrast, the Nexus announcement confirms wireless headphone support, but does not state that it includes the EXP’s wired audio connection or HDMI output.

The EXP also includes 18 Capcom games in its hardware. That gives an owner a set of games to play without first buying a separate Evercade cartridge for them. The inclusion is a defining difference from the Nexus bundle described in the announcement, which includes the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack rather than those built-in Capcom games. The guide’s statement about the EXP-R says the newer model lacks these original EXP features; it is another reason to verify the exact model name in a second-hand listing.

Because the EXP is not reported as being sold new, this choice depends on the condition and price of a used unit. The available information does not establish a fair current second-hand price, so compare actual listings in your region rather than relying on an old launch price or an assumed market value. Factor in the condition of the screen, controls, ports, battery and included accessories when assessing a used unit; those are purchase checks, not a claim that a known defect affects the model.

Check the listing carefully if you buy used

Start by confirming that the listing is for the original EXP, not the EXP-R or another Evercade model. The distinction matters because the original EXP is the version associated with Mini HDMI output and 18 built-in Capcom games. Ask the seller to show the model name and the ports, and confirm that the unit powers on and that the listed accessories are included. If TV play is the reason you want an EXP, verify the Mini HDMI connection specifically rather than assuming every similarly named model has it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no verified current used-market price in the cited specifications guide, so a listing price is not automatically a bargain simply because the model is no longer sold new. Compare multiple local offers when possible and include any cost of a missing cable, cartridge or other item you need. If the price approaches the announced Nexus price, weigh the Nexus’s new hardware, larger display and twin sticks against the EXP’s TV output and included Capcom games—but remember that the Nexus price is announced, not a guarantee of local checkout cost or launch stock.

How cartridge ownership should affect your choice

If you already own Evercade cartridges, compatibility is central to the decision. The Nexus announcement says more than 80 cartridges are compatible, while the original EXP guide describes full Evercade cartridge compatibility. Both therefore sit within the same physical-cartridge ecosystem, rather than being standalone consoles that include every game you may want to play.

Before choosing, make a short list of the cartridges you actually own or plan to buy. Confirm that each title is in the compatible Evercade collection, and consider whether your priority is using that existing library on a new handheld or adding the games included with the hardware. A Nexus purchase includes the announced Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack; an original EXP purchase brings its built-in Capcom games. Neither bundle should be treated as a substitute for every other cartridge in the ecosystem.

  • You already own cartridges: compare the specific titles you want to use against the announced compatibility information, then choose based on display, controls and connections.
  • You are starting from zero: count the included games you would genuinely play, then budget separately for any cartridges you want beyond the bundled or built-in selection.
  • You want a particular included collection: the original EXP is the option associated with 18 built-in Capcom games; the Nexus announcement specifies the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack.

The more-than-80-cartridge and more-than-700-game figures describe the breadth of the announced compatible library; they should not be read as a promise that those games come in the console box. The hardware purchase and the game-library budget are separate decisions. With the Nexus, the stated included game item is the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. With the original EXP, the 18 Capcom games are built into the handheld. Beyond those inclusions, plan on buying the cartridges you want, and check the specific collection rather than relying on the headline library totals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction also affects how useful backward compatibility is to you. If you already have a shelf of Evercade cartridges, the common ecosystem can make either device a way to continue using that collection. If you are new to Evercade, compatibility is potential access to a wider library, not a complete game bundle. Add the cost of any extra cartridges you want to the hardware price when comparing the total you expect to spend; no current cartridge prices or comprehensive ownership-cost total are established here.

TATE mode and the different kinds of play

Both models support TATE mode, the portrait-oriented play mode for compatible games. That shared feature is useful to know if you are interested in games designed around a vertically oriented display, but it does not distinguish one handheld from the other. The published facts confirm TATE support, not the number of compatible titles, how each game is configured, or whether the two devices handle the mode identically in practice.

Think of TATE as a shared bonus rather than a deciding specification unless a particular compatible game is important to you. For most buyers weighing these two models, the clearer distinctions remain the Nexus’s larger announced display and twin analogue sticks versus the EXP’s Mini HDMI TV output and built-in Capcom games. A broader feature label does not answer questions about comfort or image quality, which require real use of the hardware.

Should you buy now or wait until the Nexus launch?

As of October 13, 2026, the Nexus is scheduled for October 30. That makes it an upcoming product, not a currently established alternative whose availability, long-term reliability or hands-on performance can be assessed from the announced specifications alone. Tom’s Guide’s October 8 hands-on report is prelaunch coverage; it does not change the fact that the product is not yet launched at the date of this comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need an Evercade handheld before October 30, a used original EXP is one possible route, subject to finding a unit in acceptable condition and at a price you consider reasonable. If you can wait and the Nexus’s larger screen, twin sticks or announced features fit your priorities, waiting gives you the chance to check actual availability and post-launch reports before committing. A release date is a schedule, not a guarantee of local stock on that date.

The Nexus has an announced price of $199.99 / £169.99. Those figures are not a verified final checkout price in every country: taxes, retailer pricing, regional availability and launch stock can affect what a buyer can actually pay. No current new price or verified used-market price for the original EXP is established here, so a precise price comparison between the two is not possible.

There is a practical timing trade-off. Buying a second-hand EXP now could give you a handheld before the Nexus launch and access to its HDMI output and built-in games, but you would be buying an older unit whose price and condition depend on the individual seller. Waiting avoids making that decision before Nexus is available, but it means accepting the scheduled date and then checking what is actually in stock where you live. If you do not need a device immediately, the extra information available after launch can help answer questions the specifications cannot settle—such as how the controls feel or whether the announced features suit your routine.

Blaze Entertainment CEO Andrew Byatt described the platform’s focus this way: “Since launching Evercade in 2020, we’ve built a passionate community that values physical experiences, gaming history, and classic games,” according to Video Games Chronicle’s report of the announcement. That context helps explain why cartridge compatibility and the physical Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack are part of the Nexus story, but it does not change the buying calculation: decide which games and hardware features matter to you, then account for the separate cost of additional cartridges.

What the announced specifications do not tell you

A specification comparison can identify the display sizes, listed connections and included games, but it cannot establish which handheld feels better in the hands. The sources reviewed for this comparison do not provide a controlled comparison of battery life, comfort, latency, image quality or long-term reliability. No conclusion about those qualities should be inferred from screen size or the presence of analogue sticks alone.

Similarly, the Nexus’s announced compatibility and library totals should not be read as proof that every cartridge is included in the box or that every listed game is immediately accessible without owning its cartridge. Those numbers describe the broader product library, while the stated bundle contents are narrower. For a purchase decision, distinguish console compatibility from what comes with the console.

The same caution applies to connectivity. Mini HDMI output at 720p is a stated EXP feature; Nexus TV output is not stated in the announcement coverage. Wireless headphone support is announced for Nexus, while the EXP guide lists a 3.5 mm jack and stereo speakers. Do not assume that an unlisted port or connection is present on either device. Check the final product specifications and package contents if a particular connection is essential to your setup.

Finally, the announced Nexus price, release date and library totals are product-announcement information, not confirmation of what a particular shop will have in stock or charge. Treat $199.99 / £169.99 as the announced price and October 30, 2026 as the scheduled launch date. For the EXP, distinguish the historical fact that it was released in late 2022 from current used-market realities: condition, asking price and availability vary, and no verified current average is established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line by buyer type

Wait for the Nexus if the larger display and twin analogue sticks are the deciding features, or if you want its announced wireless headphone support, EverSync sharing and Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. Treat $199.99 / £169.99 as the announced price and October 30, 2026 as the scheduled launch, not as proof of local stock or post-launch performance.

Look for an original EXP second-hand if Mini HDMI TV output or the 18 built-in Capcom games matter more than getting a new model. Its used condition and actual local asking price are decisive because a current new price is not established. If neither model’s distinguishing features outweigh the other, waiting for the Nexus to launch and comparing real availability with used EXP listings is the more informed choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Evercade Nexus coming out?

Blaze has scheduled the Evercade Nexus for October 30, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, it has not launched; the scheduled date does not guarantee local stock on that day.

Does the Evercade Nexus connect to a TV?

The Nexus announcement coverage cited here does not state that it has TV output. The original EXP guide lists Mini HDMI output at 720p, so choose the EXP if that connection is essential and verify the exact used model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my Evercade cartridges on both handhelds?

Both are part of the Evercade physical-cartridge ecosystem. The Nexus announcement specifies compatibility with more than 80 cartridges, and the original EXP guide describes full Evercade cartridge compatibility. Check compatibility for the specific titles you own.

Which handheld includes more games?

They include different things: the Nexus bundle is announced with a physical Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack, while the original EXP has 18 Capcom games built in. Neither console purchase includes the entire Evercade cartridge library.

Is the Nexus screen better than the EXP screen?

The announced Nexus panel is larger diagonally—5.89 inches versus 4.3 inches on the original EXP. The published specifications do not provide a controlled comparison of image quality, brightness or viewing comfort, so size alone does not establish which looks better.

Do we know which handheld has better battery life or comfort?

No comparative battery-life, comfort, latency or long-term reliability findings are established in the cited coverage. Those points should be checked after the Nexus launches rather than inferred from its announced specifications.
