Evercade Nexus vs. Evercade EXP: Which Handheld Should You Buy?

The Nexus adds twin sticks, a 5.89-inch screen, wireless audio, EverSync and a Banjo double pack. Here’s how to weigh it against the original EXP without confusing it with the EXP-R.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Evercade Nexus is the stronger choice if you want a larger screen, dual analogue sticks, wireless headphones, EverSync local multiplayer, or the bundled Banjo-Kazooie games. Its announced standard price is $199.99 / £169.99 / €199.99. The original Evercade EXP may be the better-value choice if you find it for less and its exact games and features suit you—but the published side-by-side comparison is with the EXP-R, not the original EXP, so don’t treat EXP-R specifications as EXP specifications.

Price and launch status below reflect announcements and reporting available as of October 13, 2026. The Nexus was announced for October 30, 2026, a date that is still in the future as of this article’s date; check current retailer listings for confirmed availability and pricing.

What is the main difference between the Nexus and the EXP?

The Nexus is a newly announced Evercade handheld built around a larger 5.89-inch IPS display, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphone support and EverSync, a wireless local-multiplayer feature. Its launch bundle is announced to include a cartridge with Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. These additions make it the more feature-rich option on the information currently available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The EXP is the earlier model named in the buying question, but the clearest direct comparison in available coverage is between the Nexus and the EXP-R. Those are distinct models. For example, reporting gives the EXP-R a 4.3-inch IPS display; that measurement does not establish the original EXP’s display size. The same caution applies to any other EXP-R detail. Video Games Chronicle’s announcement coverage explicitly frames its comparison around the EXP-R.

#1 Best Overall
Evercade Nexus and Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack
  • Evercade Nexus delivers classic retro gaming on the go! New sleek design with textured grips, dual analogue joysticks and the biggest, best Evercade screen to date. Complete Evercade cartridge library compatibility of over 80 cartridges and 700+ games.
  • 5.89" 840x512 IPS high resolution screen with 500+ nit brightness, WiFi 6 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless connectivity for updates, Wireless headphone support. TATE mode for vertical screen play.
  • EverSync wireless multiplayer allows multiple Nexus handhelds to directly connect and play together in supported games with no WiFi network required.
  • Dual stereo sound with front-facing speakers, 5+ hours battery life with USB-C charging, 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • Includes physical cartridge featuring brand new versions of the 64-bit hits, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie from Rare. Comes with console, USB-C charging cable and physical game cartridge featuring Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. Note: Evercade Nexus does not connect to a TV.

That evidence gap affects the recommendation: it is possible to identify what the Nexus adds, but not to give a fully verified, specification-by-specification comparison with the original EXP from these sources. If you already own an EXP, decide based on whether the Nexus’s new controls, screen, audio, multiplayer and included games are worth its announced price to you—not on an assumed EXP-R comparison.

Nexus vs. EXP at a glance

Buying factor Evercade Nexus Original Evercade EXP
Display 5.89-inch IPS, announced for Nexus; manufacturer announcement reproduced by WorthPlaying Original EXP display size is not stated in the opened coverage; VGC’s 4.3-inch figure is for EXP-R
Controls Twin analogue sticks Original EXP control details are not established in the opened direct comparison
Wireless audio Wireless headphone support announced Original EXP wireless-headphone support is not established in the opened direct comparison
Local multiplayer EverSync lets two Nexus units share a game wirelessly; both players need a Nexus Original EXP support for EverSync is not established in the opened coverage
Included games Announced bundle includes one Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge with Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie Check the exact EXP bundle and region before buying; the opened sources do not establish a single current EXP bundle
Cartridge library Reported compatible with more than 80 Evercade cartridges containing more than 700 games Evercade cartridge ownership is relevant across the platform; confirm compatibility for any specific cartridge before purchase
Price Announced standard price: $199.99 / £169.99 / €199.99 Current original EXP price is not established in the opened coverage; compare live listings for your region
Battery Manufacturer-announced claim of 5+ hours; no independent test result is established Original EXP battery-life figure is not established in the opened comparison

The table separates confirmed Nexus announcements from facts that remain unestablished for the original EXP. It does not use EXP-R values as a substitute. Nexus cartridge and game totals were reported by Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 hands-on report; they describe the reported compatible library, not games included with the console.

How the Nexus’s screen and controls change the choice

A larger announced display

The Nexus’s 5.89-inch IPS screen is a useful concrete upgrade if you prefer a larger viewing area for handheld play. VGC reported 4.3 inches for the EXP-R, but that figure cannot answer how much larger the Nexus is than the original EXP. Treat 5.89 inches as an announced Nexus specification, not as a verified comparison against your EXP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Twin sticks for games that use camera control

The Nexus adds two analogue sticks. That is especially relevant to the included Banjo games: reporting says their ports support a reworked camera controlled with both sticks. Twin-stick input can make camera movement more direct than relying on a single control input, although the available early coverage is not a long-term playability assessment.

If you mainly play cartridges that do not benefit from analogue camera control, the extra sticks may matter less than price, screen preference and the games in the bundle. The key question is not whether the Nexus has more controls, but whether the games you actually play make those controls useful.

What comes with the Nexus, and what does it cost?

The announced Nexus standard price is $199.99 / £169.99 / €199.99, with a planned October 30, 2026 launch. Those are announced figures, not confirmation of the final shelf price or stock in a particular country. Since the launch date has not yet arrived as of October 13, confirm current availability with a retailer before making a purchase decision. The price and date were reported in the announcement reproduced by WorthPlaying and VGC’s announcement report.

The launch bundle is announced to include one Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge containing Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. That makes the bundle most compelling if you want those games or value having them ready to play without a separate purchase. It is less of a reason to upgrade if you already own the games or would not choose them. The available sources do not establish the original EXP’s current bundle, so compare the actual contents of the unit you are considering rather than assuming all EXP packages are alike.

The Banjo ports are described as enhanced versions. In a September 11, 2026 interview reported by TechRadar, Blaze communications head Sean Cleaver said the team worked with the games’ original source code and included discoveries such as previously unreleased tracks, a level editor and unlockable bonuses. That is a report about the included ports, not a promise that every detail will be meaningful to every player.

What to budget beyond the console

The announced standard price is only a starting point for comparing the two systems. Check whether the EXP listing you are considering is new or used, which games it includes, and whether the seller’s price reflects the exact model and region you want. A lower console price may be less attractive if its package omits games you want, while the Nexus bundle’s value depends on whether you want the Banjo cartridge. No current original EXP price or single standard EXP bundle is established here, so there is no reliable like-for-like total to calculate.

Blaze also listed a hard-shell EVA carry case with room for six cartridges and a screen-protector kit as separately sold Nexus accessories. Their prices and availability were not verified. Treat them as optional potential costs, not as items included in the announced console price. If you already own a case or do not plan to carry cartridges, you may not need either accessory; if you do want them, confirm local availability and add the actual retail price to your budget.

Will your Evercade cartridges work on the Nexus?

Evercade is a cartridge-based platform, and Nexus reporting describes compatibility with more than 80 Evercade cartridges representing more than 700 games. If you already own a substantial collection, cartridge compatibility means you can consider the Nexus as a new way to play that library rather than assuming you must rebuy all your games. Check a specific cartridge’s compatibility if it is central to your decision; the reported totals are platform-wide figures, not a guarantee that every Evercade cartridge is supported.

For a buyer choosing between an original EXP and Nexus, the library may be less decisive than the hardware and price. If the games you own are among those supported, compare the Nexus’s screen, sticks, audio and multiplayer against the EXP unit’s actual condition, bundle and price. Do not count the more than 700 games as games included in the Nexus package: the launch bundle specifically names the Banjo double pack, while the larger total refers to compatible library coverage.

That distinction matters when judging value. An existing Evercade owner may already have a library worth carrying over, so the cost of the new handheld need not mean starting a collection again. At the same time, the compatibility figure is reported as more than 80 cartridges and more than 700 games, not as a promise that a particular favorite is supported. Check that individual title or cartridge before buying if it is the main reason you want to switch.

Does EverSync make the Nexus a better multiplayer handheld?

EverSync is announced as a wireless local-multiplayer feature that lets two Nexus consoles share a game using one cartridge. Both players need a Nexus unit. It therefore reduces the need for each player to own a separate copy of a supported game, but it does not remove the requirement for a second console. The feature is most relevant if you expect to play locally with someone who also has the hardware.

The available information establishes the one-cartridge, two-Nexus setup, not which specific games support EverSync or how well it performs in varied conditions. If multiplayer is your main reason to buy, verify that the game you want supports the feature and consider whether the other player has access to a Nexus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a solo player, EverSync should be treated as a useful extra rather than a reason by itself to pay the Nexus price. For two people considering purchases together, the shared-cartridge setup could affect the value calculation, but you still need to account for two consoles. No announced feature described here lets an EXP owner join an EverSync session, so do not assume that an existing EXP can serve as the second device.

Wireless headphones, battery and portability

Wireless audio

The Nexus announcement includes wireless headphone support. That can be useful for private listening or when you do not want to use wired headphones, but the available details do not establish supported headphone standards, setup steps or whether the original EXP offers an equivalent feature. If wireless audio is decisive, confirm compatibility with your headphones before buying.

Battery claim and accessories

The manufacturer announcement gives the Nexus a battery-life claim of 5+ hours. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified test; the sources do not provide test conditions such as brightness, game, audio connection or play pattern. The opened comparison also does not establish a comparable original EXP figure, so this number cannot show which handheld lasts longer in real use.

There is not enough comparable information here to say which system is lighter, smaller, easier to carry, or better for travel. The Nexus case is described as hard-shell EVA and has room for six cartridges, but that does not establish the console’s dimensions or weight. If portability is your deciding factor, check the dimensions and weight of the exact consoles and cases listed by a retailer, and consider whether you want to carry cartridges with the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you upgrade from an original EXP?

For an EXP owner, the Nexus is an upgrade in the sense that it adds features announced for the new model, but whether it is worth buying depends on which features solve a real problem for you. The incomplete direct comparison makes a simple claim that it is better in every respect unjustified. Use this checklist against your own console and playing habits:

  • Consider the Nexus if a larger screen, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphones or EverSync addresses something you want.
  • Consider the bundle if you specifically want Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, including the announced enhanced-port extras.
  • Keep using the EXP if it already suits your games and the Nexus additions do not change how you play.
  • Compare actual prices for the precise model, region, condition and bundle. The Nexus figure is announced; the current original EXP price is not established here.
  • Check your collection against the Nexus’s cartridge compatibility before assuming a favorite game will work, and avoid budgeting for repurchases unless a specific cartridge requires one.

Blaze CEO Andrew Byatt described the Nexus as the result of “six years of listening and learning,” saying it delivered features players had consistently requested, according to VGC’s March 2026 announcement report. That explains the product direction, but it is not independent evidence that every EXP owner should upgrade.

The hands-on coverage available before launch is an early impressions report, and its author was still awaiting a full review. It can describe announced features and initial impressions, but it does not settle questions about long-term reliability, real-world battery performance or how the console holds up over time. If you are not in a hurry, waiting for launch coverage and retailer listings may give you a firmer basis for judging those points.

Which handheld should you buy?

Choose the Nexus if its announced additions are worth the premium

The Nexus is the clearer pick for someone shopping for a new Evercade handheld who wants modern control options, a larger announced display, wireless audio or local multiplayer, and who values the bundled Banjo games. Its announced price is a premium commitment, and its October 30, 2026 launch remains in the future as of October 13, so confirm the actual listing before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the original EXP only after checking the exact deal

The original EXP can be the sensible buy if its current price is meaningfully lower and the exact unit’s bundle and features match your needs. Since the available head-to-head evidence concerns EXP-R rather than EXP, verify the original model’s specifications and package directly instead of borrowing EXP-R measurements. For an existing owner, keep the EXP unless one or more Nexus additions matter enough to justify paying for another handheld.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Evercade Nexus worth upgrading to from the original EXP?

It depends on whether you will use the Nexus’s announced larger 5.89-inch display, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphone support, EverSync or Banjo double-pack bundle. If those do not change how you play, keeping an EXP that already suits you may be the better value. The direct comparison coverage is with EXP-R, so compare the original EXP’s actual features, bundle and condition rather than assuming EXP-R specifications apply.

Will my Evercade cartridges work on the Nexus?

Nexus coverage reports compatibility with more than 80 Evercade cartridges containing more than 700 games. That is useful if you already own a collection, but it is not a guarantee for every individual cartridge. Confirm compatibility for a favorite title before purchasing if it is essential to your decision.

Does the Nexus come with more than 700 games?

No. The more-than-700 figure refers to games across the reported compatible Evercade cartridge library. The announced launch bundle includes one Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge with Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.

Can an EXP play multiplayer with a Nexus through EverSync?

The announced EverSync setup uses two Nexus consoles and one cartridge. The available details do not establish EXP compatibility, so do not assume an original EXP can be the second console. Check support for the specific game you want to play as well.

The tailor-made hard EVA case helps store and carry compatible Evercade gear without extra bulk inside backpacks.

How long does the Nexus battery last?

Blaze’s announcement claims 5+ hours, but that is not an independent test result. No test conditions or comparable original EXP battery figure are established here, so real-world runtime and which handheld lasts longer remain unverified.

What accessories are available for the Nexus?

The announcement listed a hard-shell EVA case with space for six cartridges and a screen-protector kit as separate accessories. Their prices and availability were not verified, so check local listings and treat them as extra costs rather than included items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Evercade Nexus worth upgrading to from the original EXP?

It depends on whether you will use the Nexus’s announced larger screen, twin analogue sticks, wireless headphone support, EverSync or Banjo bundle. If not, keeping an EXP that already suits you may be better value. Direct comparison coverage concerns EXP-R, not the original EXP, so verify the precise model’s features and bundle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my Evercade cartridges work on the Nexus?

Coverage reports compatibility with more than 80 Evercade cartridges containing more than 700 games, but that does not guarantee every cartridge. Check compatibility for any favorite that is central to your decision.

The announced EverSync setup uses two Nexus consoles and one cartridge. EXP compatibility is not established, so do not assume an original EXP can join. Check support for the particular game, too.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Nexus if its twin sticks, larger announced screen, wireless audio, EverSync or Banjo bundle are worth the announced $199.99 / £169.99 / €199.99 to you. Keep or choose an original EXP if it meets your needs at a better price—but check its exact model, bundle and features, because EXP-R specifications are not a substitute. The Nexus launch was announced for October 30, 2026; confirm current retail price and availability before buying.
