Start with Quick Jobs, learn a small set of controls, and delay buying a truck until you can complete deliveries reliably. Quick Jobs lend you a loaded truck and cover the employer-side costs, making them the safest way to learn steering, braking, navigation and parking. After you own a truck, Company Jobs and Freight Market offers open a more profitable but riskier business loop in which you pay for fuel, repairs and other operating costs.

What to do first in Euro Truck Simulator 2
Create your profile, open the controls menu and configure only the inputs you will use constantly. Then take several Quick Jobs before spending money on equipment or accepting demanding cargo. This sequence teaches the driving loop while protecting your cash.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set up your profile and controls. Bind steering, throttle, brake, turn signals, headlights, cruise control, Route Advisor, camera reset, wipers and parking. You can add retarder, engine-brake, mirror and trailer controls later.
- Accept a short Quick Job. Read the cargo, destination and delivery deadline before confirming. Choose a familiar, forgiving route rather than combining a difficult load with an unfamiliar city or depot.
- Use the Route Advisor and map before moving. Preview major turns, motorway exits and the delivery entrance. Knowing where the final approach is located prevents last-second lane changes.
- Practice the complete cycle. Pull out carefully, maintain your lane, stop for fuel when prompted, observe rest warnings and approach the loading or unloading area slowly.
- Repeat until the routine feels predictable. Try manual parking when you are comfortable; use the assisted option while you learn trailer geometry and camera views.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 was released by SCS Software on 19 October 2012. The official factsheet described a map covering more than 60 European cities at that stage; the map and features have expanded since then, so treat that number as a dated factsheet figure rather than a current total.
Choosing the right job as a new driver
The three job sources have different financial exposure and learning value. The safest progression is to use Quick Jobs first, then compare Company Jobs and Freight Market work after purchasing a truck.

| Job source | Truck ownership | Who pays operating costs? | Best beginner use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Jobs | Not required; the employer supplies a truck | The employer-side responsibilities are covered | Learn controls, roads, fuel stops, deadlines and parking with limited financial risk |
| Company Jobs | Required | You pay for fuel and repairs and must reach the depot | Build income and experience once you can operate your own truck consistently |
| Freight Market | Required | You carry the normal costs of running your truck | Plan ahead and select offers rather than simply taking whatever is available at a depot |
Quick Jobs: the low-risk on-ramp
The Euro Truck Simulator 2 manual summarizes the trade-off clearly: “The quick ones don’t pay much, but your employer provides for everything.” You receive a borrowed, loaded truck and do not have to fund its fuel, repairs or purchase. The lower payout is the price of learning without putting a new company into debt.
Use several Quick Jobs to notice how much room a trailer needs in a turn, how early a heavy vehicle must brake and how the game signals fuel and rest requirements. Short routes are preferable at first because they let you repeat the driving and delivery approach more often.
Company Jobs: higher rates with real exposure
Company Jobs become available after you own a truck. They generally pay better, but the truck is now your responsibility: fuel, repairs and the trip to the depot all come out of your finances. A displayed payout is not the same as profit. A long route, expensive repair or empty repositioning leg can consume much of the apparent margin.
Freight Market: plan before accepting
Cargo can be taken at a depot, but the manual recommends using Freight Market and planning ahead to find better deals. Compare destination, distance, cargo requirements, deadline and the likely return route. Planning also gives you time to identify a safe entrance to the destination instead of discovering a tight turn at the end of a tiring drive.
Controls you actually need
A keyboard or gamepad is enough to begin; a steering wheel and pedals are optional. A wheel can make steering smoother, but it does not remove the need to understand mirrors, braking distance or trailer movement.

| Priority | Controls to bind | Why they matter |
|---|---|---|
| First minutes | Steering, throttle, brake, indicators, headlights | These operate the truck safely in ordinary traffic. |
| Every trip | Cruise control, Route Advisor, camera reset, wipers, parking | They reduce distraction and help with navigation, weather and delivery approaches. |
| After the basics | Retarder, engine brake, trailer attach, mirror views and other trailer functions | They give finer control on descents and during coupling or manoeuvring. |
Bind controls where you can reach them without looking away from the road. Add functions gradually rather than assigning the entire control list on your first launch. A smaller, familiar layout is safer than a complete layout you cannot remember.
Do you need a steering wheel?
No. Keyboard and controller inputs are supported, and either is sufficient for the ordinary career loop. A wheel and pedals may improve steering precision and make long sessions more comfortable, but buy one only after you know you enjoy the game and understand its driving demands.
SCS has also described a planned Multi-Function Display intended to reduce the burden of managing the game’s large control set. Treat that as a forthcoming interface feature, not as hardware or software that a beginner must have.
Driving techniques that prevent expensive mistakes
Brake before the turn
Brake earlier than feels necessary, especially downhill or while hauling a heavy trailer. Once the trailer is pushing the tractor, a late correction can carry you through a junction or into another lane. Reduce speed in a straight line, then steer smoothly.
Make room for the trailer
On a right turn, position the truck so the trailer can clear the corner without climbing the kerb or striking a post. Do not try to fix a turn with a sharp mid-corner correction; slow down, allow the trailer to track through, and use mirrors to verify clearance.

Change lanes deliberately
Check mirrors, signal early and move only when the target lane is clear. A trailer occupies more space than the cab appears to occupy, so a quick glance is not enough at motorway speed.
Use the Route Advisor as a navigation aid
Preview the next junction and destination entrance before you reach it. If the map suggests a complicated approach, reduce speed well in advance and choose the lane that avoids a last-second crossing of traffic.
Recover instead of panicking
If you miss a turn, scrape a barrier or run low on fuel, pull over safely. Check the Route Advisor, refuel or arrange a repair, then continue. The game saves frequently automatically, but make a manual save before an unfamiliar manoeuvre or a costly business decision so you have a safe recovery point.
Parking and manoeuvring practice
Parking is where trailer geometry becomes most obvious. Begin with the assisted parking option while you learn the camera and the relationship between steering input and trailer movement. When you can approach a bay slowly and keep the trailer aligned, switch to manual parking for deliberate practice and the additional challenge.

A simple parking routine
- Stop before the bay and inspect the approach with the camera and mirrors.
- Set up wide enough that the trailer has room to swing without hitting nearby objects.
- Reverse at walking speed, making small steering inputs.
- Pause whenever the trailer angle becomes unclear; pull forward to reset instead of forcing a bad line.
- Finish only when the trailer is straight and fully inside the marked area.
Managing money before buying your first truck
A first truck changes the game from borrowed employment to operating a business. Buy a dependable truck only when your Quick Job routine is stable and you can keep a cash reserve after the purchase. That reserve covers fuel, repairs and loan commitments when a delivery pays less than expected.
- Protect operating cash. Fuel and repairs are unavoidable costs once you own a truck.
- Account for loans. Regular repayments can erase a thin margin even when individual jobs appear profitable.
- Delay cosmetic upgrades. Paint and accessories do not improve your ability to complete a delivery; keep the money available for running costs.
- Consider the return route. An attractive outbound payout may require an expensive empty repositioning trip.
There is no universal “best” first truck or job order in the available guidance. Choose reliability and a manageable financial commitment over appearance, then let your preferred routes and cargo types shape later upgrades.
Skills and company progression
Skills unlock more job categories and longer routes. Pick skills that match the work you actually enjoy, then add distance or cargo specializations as your routine improves. This is a play-style recommendation, not a developer-mandated order: a player who prefers short local work has different priorities from one who enjoys long motorway hauls.
Once income is predictable, expand gradually. Garages add capacity, trucks let you accept more work, and hired drivers create the longer-term management loop described by SCS Software. Buying several trucks before the first one is paying its way increases fixed costs without guaranteeing useful cash flow.
Version 1.58 also improved management screens, including clearer inspection of driver-skill progress and manager information. Revisit those screens as your company grows; they help you decide when another garage, truck or driver is justified instead of relying on guesswork.

Common beginner problems and practical fixes
“My payout disappeared.”
After buying a truck, fuel, repairs, loan commitments and empty repositioning can consume the headline payment. Review those costs before accepting the next offer and keep a reserve rather than spending every surplus on upgrades.
“I keep missing turns.”
Preview the map before departure, follow the Route Advisor and slow before junctions. Missing a turn is recoverable; crossing lanes abruptly to correct it is more dangerous.
“Reversing feels impossible.”
Use assisted parking, reduce speed and make small inputs. Pull forward to reset the angle whenever the trailer stops responding predictably. The Driving Academy’s manoeuvring lessons provide guided repetition.
“The controls are overwhelming.”
Return to the priority list: steering, throttle, brake, indicators, lights, cruise control, Route Advisor, camera reset, wipers and parking. Add retarder, engine brake, mirrors and trailer functions only as your driving routine demands them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“I damaged the truck.”
Pull over, inspect the Route Advisor and arrange a repair before continuing. Automatic saves are frequent, and a manual save made before a difficult manoeuvre gives you another recovery option.
The progression that works for most beginners
Learn with Quick Jobs, practise navigation and parking, then buy a reliable truck with cash left for operating costs. Use Company Jobs for owned-truck experience and Freight Market to plan stronger offers. Develop skills that fit your preferred cargo, inspect company-management information as drivers progress, and expand only when the existing operation is predictable. That sequence keeps early risk low while still leading naturally from driver training to fleet management.
