What “cheats” mean in Euro Truck Simulator 2
ETS2 does not use a supported menu of typed cheat codes in the way some games do. The feature players usually call “cheats” is the developer console. SCS Software’s Modding Wiki describes a console in each SCS game, and its documentation treats the console as a debugging and configuration tool as well as a way to change gameplay-related settings.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat distinction matters. Official documentation confirms configuration variables such as developer mode, debug-camera speed and an economy reset function. Community-maintained lists also show commands such as warp, but command names and effects can change between game versions. There is no reliable basis here for promising universal money, experience-point or unlock commands.
Is the console available on PC, PlayStation or Xbox?
PC: documented and supported as a developer feature
The configuration-file method is documented for the PC version. It requires access to the ETS2 user folder and a text editor. You do not need a special paid utility: the operating system’s ordinary text editor is sufficient. A keyboard is also required for the default tilde input, although the game’s broader controller support does not itself provide command access.

PlayStation and Xbox: access is not confirmed
SCS announced development work for bringing ETS2 and American Truck Simulator to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in an October 2025 development post, but that announcement did not provide a release date or document a developer console. An official 1.61 experimental-beta announcement mentions controller support as work intended for future console use; it does not describe console commands.
Therefore, do not assume that the PC console exists on a console edition. The official material available for this guide does not establish developer-console access on PlayStation or Xbox. Check a newer SCS platform listing or release announcement for your specific edition before expecting command support.
What you need before enabling it
- A PC installation of ETS2: the documented procedure edits a local user configuration file.
- Access to the active user folder: this is where the game keeps
config.cfg. - A plain-text editor: a standard operating-system text editor is enough; no paid cheat tool or special utility is required.
- A backup: keep an untouched copy of the configuration file and, for valuable progress, a separate profile backup.
- A keyboard layout you understand: the default opening key is the tilde character, and its physical key varies by layout.
Close ETS2 before editing. The game may rewrite configuration values when it exits, so changing the file while the game is open can cause your edits not to persist.
How to enable the ETS2 developer console on PC
Make the change while the game is not running, and keep a backup of the original file. A configuration edit can affect how the game starts, so preserving the untouched file gives you a straightforward rollback.
- Locate the ETS2 user folder. The community Truck Simulator Wiki gives these practical default locations:
- Windows:
DocumentsEuro Truck Simulator 2 - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Linux:
~/.local/share/Euro Truck Simulator 2
The exact location can differ if your operating system or installation uses a customized user-data path. Look for the folder that contains your current ETS2 configuration rather than creating a second folder with the same name.
- Windows:
- Back up the configuration file. In that folder, copy
config.cfgto another folder or rename the copy so you can restore it if needed. Do not overwrite the backup each time you experiment. - Open
config.cfgas plain text. Use a basic text editor rather than a word processor, which can add formatting that breaks configuration syntax. If your editor hides extensions, enable extension display so you can verify the real filename. - Set both required variables to one. Find the lines for
g_consoleandg_developerand set each value to1. The important part is enabling both variables; changing only one does not follow SCS’s documented setup. - Save the file without changing its name or extension. Confirm that it remains
config.cfg, not a second extension such as.txt. Preserve the file as text and avoid automatic rich-text formatting. - Launch ETS2 and open the console. With the default keyboard mapping, press the
~key. The console should appear over the game view. Make sure ETS2, rather than another window, has keyboard focus.
SCS’s console documentation also lists keyboard navigation shortcuts. Their exact behavior depends on the game build and input layout, so use the shortcuts documented for your installed version rather than assuming that a shortcut from an older guide still behaves identically.

Official variables versus community commands
There are two useful categories to keep separate. SCS’s configuration-variable reference documents named settings and their purpose. Community pages collect additional console examples, but those lists are maintained independently and may not track every release. A command appearing in a community list is not a guarantee that it remains available or behaves the same way in your installation.
| Source type | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Official SCS documentation | Confirming variables, setup requirements and documented behavior | It is not a promise of conventional money, XP or unlock cheats. |
| Community-maintained command pages | Finding examples such as warp <speed> |
Syntax and effects can be version-sensitive. |
Useful documented configuration variables
The following entries come from SCS’s official configuration-variable reference. They are settings, not guaranteed “cheats,” and their availability or behavior can change with updates.
| Variable | What it does | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
g_console |
Enables the developer console interface when set to 1. |
Required for the documented console setup. |
g_developer |
Enables developer mode when set to 1. |
Required alongside g_console. |
g_flyspeed |
Controls debug-camera movement speed. | Useful when working with the free/debug camera; it does not represent a money or progression cheat. |
g_force_economy_reset |
Forces new job listings when the documented conditions for its use are met. | Use cautiously because it changes the job market state associated with your profile. |
Configuration syntax and accepted values are defined by the game. Keep a copy of the original line before changing a variable, and avoid pasting a long list of settings from an old version into a current profile. If you only want the console, change the two enablement variables first and leave unrelated settings untouched.
The warp command and community examples
The community Truck Simulator Wiki lists warp <speed> as a console command. In other words, the command expects a speed value after the word warp. Because this is a community-maintained example rather than a complete, version-locked SCS command reference, verify the syntax and result in your installed build.
Do not treat every command list found online as interchangeable. A guide written for an earlier release may include removed commands, changed parameters or effects that only occur in a particular mode. Test unfamiliar commands on a backed-up profile, and avoid economy or profile-affecting changes on a save you cannot replace.
Why the tilde key does not open the console
Check both configuration values
The most common configuration mistake is enabling g_console but leaving g_developer at 0, or the reverse. Reopen config.cfg, confirm that both entries are set to 1, save the file, and restart the game.
Confirm that the file was really saved as configuration text
Make sure the edited file is the one inside the active ETS2 user folder and that its name is exactly config.cfg. A text editor can silently create config.cfg.txt if file extensions are hidden. Keeping the backup beside the active file makes it easier to compare and restore the original.
Consider your keyboard layout
The default console key is ~, but the physical key that produces that character varies by keyboard layout. An older SCS forum guide specifically calls out layout-related troubleshooting. If pressing the key labeled for tilde does nothing, verify which key combination produces the tilde character in your operating system and try that input while ETS2 is focused.
Do not assume there is one universal replacement key: the usable key depends on the layout and the game’s input mapping. If the two variables are correct and the layout key still fails, restore the backup, repeat the edit carefully and consult the current SCS documentation for your build.
Rule out an update or profile mismatch
After a game update, recheck the active configuration file and confirm that you launched the same installation whose user folder you edited. A second installation, customized user-data path or update can make a correct edit appear ineffective. Reapply only the documented two-variable change instead of importing an entire old configuration.

Safe workflow for experimenting with commands
- Back up first. Keep an untouched copy of
config.cfgand, for important progress, a separate copy of the profile data. - Change one setting at a time. This makes it possible to identify which variable caused an unexpected result.
- Record the original value. Write down the existing value before changing a variable such as
g_flyspeedorg_force_economy_reset. - Test on a non-critical save. Economy and profile-related changes can alter the state you intended to preserve.
- Use the smallest possible command test. Verify that the console opens before testing a gameplay command, and stop if the result is unclear.
- Recheck after updates. A game update can change command availability, syntax or the effect of a variable.
These precautions are especially important when copying commands from community pages. Community documentation is useful for discovering examples, but it is not a promise that every command works in every ETS2 release.
Version context: ETS2 1.61
SCS announced that Euro Truck Simulator 2 version 1.61 was released on Steam on September 17, 2026. That date identifies the current release context for this guide. It does not mean that every older command list has been updated for 1.61.

Frequently asked questions
Is enabling the console free?
Yes. The documented method uses the PC game, its existing user folder and an ordinary plain-text editor. No paid utility, subscription or special hardware is required.
Do I need to edit the file every time I start ETS2?
The documented setup is to set both variables in config.cfg. If the values remain saved in the active file, you should not need to repeat the edit for every launch; recheck after updates or if the file is replaced.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does changing only g_console not work?
SCS’s setup requires both g_console and g_developer to be set to 1. Confirm both entries, save the file and restart ETS2.
What is the best ETS2 cheat command for money?
No universal money command is established by the official references covered here. Treat websites promising guaranteed money, XP or unlock commands as unverified, especially when they do not identify the game version.
Can I use warp <speed> safely?
It is a community-documented example, not a permanently guaranteed command. Verify its syntax and effect in your installed build and test it on a backed-up, non-critical profile.

Are the commands identical on Windows, macOS and Linux?
The configuration method is the same in principle, but the user-folder paths and keyboard layouts differ. Use the path for your operating system and verify the key that produces the tilde character.
Does ETS2 have console commands on Xbox or PlayStation?
Official announcements covered here do not confirm developer-console access on either platform. Check a current SCS platform listing or release announcement for the specific console edition.
Bottom line for PC and console players
On PC, the reliable starting point is simple: edit the active config.cfg, set g_console 1 and g_developer 1, save a backup, then press ~. Use official variables such as g_flyspeed and g_force_economy_reset with care, and regard community commands such as warp <speed> as version-sensitive examples rather than permanent cheats. For PlayStation and Xbox, developer-console access remains unconfirmed by the official announcements covered here.
