Yes—many mesh Wi-Fi systems support Ethernet backhaul, a wired connection between the main unit and one or more mesh nodes. It can keep that inter-node traffic off the Wi-Fi link, but support, port choice, setup order and switch placement vary by model and operating mode. Check the instructions for your exact system before connecting cables.
What Ethernet backhaul does—and what it does not
A mesh system uses backhaul to carry traffic between its main router and satellite nodes. Backhaul can travel over Wi-Fi or, on compatible systems, over Ethernet. TP-Link says Deco switches from Wi-Fi to Ethernet backhaul between two units when it detects a wired connection; it also notes that not every Deco unit needs to be wired, and wired and wireless links can be mixed on that system.

A wired link can avoid having the inter-node connection compete with client traffic for Wi-Fi airtime. It does not guarantee faster internet or a particular speed. Results depend on the mesh hardware, Ethernet port speeds, cable, internet service and any remaining wireless links. NETGEAR explains the potential benefit and its performance dependencies in its wired backhaul overview.
Check compatibility before running cable
- Confirm that both the main mesh unit and the node support Ethernet backhaul. A port may be intended only for wired client devices, and some mesh points have no Ethernet port.
- Do not assume that every model or generation in a product family has the same capabilities. Check the support instructions for your exact units.
- Identify whether the system is operating in router mode or access point/bridge mode. The allowed wiring topology can change with the mode.
- Check the port speeds and number of available ports if performance or connecting multiple devices matters.
For example, Google says its Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet ports and cannot be hardwired. Its Nest Wifi and Google Wifi Ethernet setup guidance also illustrates a supported wired arrangement for devices that do have Ethernet ports.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up Ethernet backhaul
Use this as a general sequence, not a universal port map. Follow the current instructions for your specific model and mode.
- Set up the mesh units as instructed. Some systems require wireless setup first. TP-Link directs Deco users to add all units to the same network wirelessly in the app, then connect Ethernet; its guide says the wired backhaul activates automatically. See TP-Link’s Deco Ethernet backhaul instructions.
- Connect the correct ports. Port assignments vary. ASUS’s cited AiMesh instructions show a LAN port on the main router connected to a WAN port on the node and describe a setting to prioritize WAN or wired backhaul. Follow the diagram for your model in ASUS’s AiMesh Ethernet backhaul guide.
- Add a switch only if you need more ports. Place it where the manufacturer’s diagram specifies. In Deco router mode, satellites should connect behind the main Deco—either to its LAN port or to a switch connected to that LAN port. Google’s illustrated setup places its switch downstream of the primary Wifi router.
- Verify the connection. Check the mesh app or administration page for a wired connection status. If the node still reports Wi-Fi backhaul, test a different cable or port and try connecting the node directly before investigating the switch.
Choose cable and switch carefully
Ethernet cable
Cat 5e is a sensible baseline for the supported configurations described by Google and ASUS. Google recommends at least Cat 5e-rated cabling, and ASUS recommends Cat 5e or greater in its cited switch configurations. A higher category is not automatically necessary for every setup; consider the Ethernet ports, cable run and requirements of your equipment.

Ethernet switch
An unmanaged switch can provide extra ports when the main router or a node does not have enough. It still has to sit in the correct place in the topology. ASUS provides separate guidance for router mode, AP mode, managed switches and VLAN settings in its AiMesh Ethernet backhaul configuration instructions. Google warns against connecting a switch or another point to the primary device before setup is complete, and recommends an unmanaged switch or an appropriately configured managed switch.
Why wiring diagrams differ
There is no single wiring layout for every mesh network. In Deco router mode, satellites must connect behind the main Deco; its access point mode permits other arrangements described in the manufacturer’s guide. ASUS’s rules also vary by router mode, AP mode, switch type and VLAN configuration. Google’s setup guidance has its own ordering and placement requirements.

Following a diagram meant for another brand—or even another operating mode—can leave a node offline or create an invalid topology or network loop. Use one manufacturer’s instructions for the exact hardware and mode you have, rather than combining diagrams.

When to use wired or wireless backhaul
- Use Ethernet backhaul when your mesh units support it and a cable run is practical, especially if you want to avoid using Wi-Fi airtime for communication between wired nodes.
- Use wireless backhaul when cabling is impractical or the specific node does not support a wired connection. It is simpler to deploy, though the inter-node link uses Wi-Fi.
- Decide based on your system by checking backhaul support, available port speeds and ports, switch requirements, and the vendor’s topology and setup rules.
