Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi: Which Devices Should You Plug In?

Most home devices do not need Ethernet. Consider wiring stationary computers, streaming TVs, or game systems when a cable is practical and wireless performance or congestion is a concern.

Most home devices do not need Ethernet. Wi-Fi is usually the practical choice for phones, tablets, and anything you move around. Consider plugging in a stationary desktop computer, streaming TV, or game system when the router is reachable by cable and you want a steadier connection or less Wi-Fi congestion. Whether you notice a difference depends on your internet service, router, device, cable, and home network.

Which devices are worth connecting by Ethernet?

Start with devices that usually stay in one place and use the network heavily. The FCC says a direct Ethernet connection can provide the highest speeds and alleviate Wi-Fi congestion; that is general guidance, not a promise of a particular speed increase in every home.

Desktop and work computers

A stationary computer is a good candidate if its wireless connection is unreliable, or if you want to keep its traffic off Wi-Fi where a cable run is convenient. A laptop can also use Ethernet while parked at a desk, but Wi-Fi is more useful when you move it between rooms.

Streaming TVs

A television used for streaming may be worth wiring if it is near the router and wireless coverage at that spot is weak or inconsistent. The FCC includes streaming TVs among examples of devices that may connect directly; it does not say every TV needs a cable.

Game systems

A stationary console is another reasonable option, particularly when wireless performance is unstable or the household has many simultaneous network activities. Ethernet bypasses the Wi-Fi signal path for that console, but does not increase the capacity of your internet service.

Which devices should usually stay on Wi-Fi?

Keep phones and tablets on Wi-Fi: their mobility is generally more useful than a wired connection. The same applies to laptops and other devices that move around or sit where running a cable would be awkward. Wi-Fi avoids a device-specific cable run, while Ethernet ties the connected device to the cable route.

The FCC’s August 4, 2015 report lists laptops, tablets, smart TVs, smartphones, game consoles, and Blu-ray players as representative connected devices and describes both Wi-Fi and Ethernet as home-network connection methods. That is useful context for the kinds of devices that can use home networking, not a guide to the ports or capabilities of a particular model.

What changes when you use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi?

Consideration Ethernet Wi-Fi
Mobility The device is tied to the cable route. Devices can move within wireless coverage.
Signal path A direct cable bypasses Wi-Fi for the connected device. Performance depends on wireless signal, placement, range, and network demand.
Congestion Wiring a suitable device can alleviate Wi-Fi congestion, but other devices and the internet connection still share capacity. Multiple simultaneous uses can burden the wireless network.
Setup Requires compatible ports and a safe, acceptable cable route. Needs no cable run to each device.

Do not assume Ethernet will make a particular device faster. The outcome depends on the internet service, router, device, cable, and the rest of the home network. The FCC’s guidance is qualitative; it does not establish a typical household speed gain.

How to decide what to wire

  1. Identify the problem. If a stationary device has unstable wireless performance or the household’s Wi-Fi is busy, it may be worth testing a wired connection. Streaming, graphics-intensive gaming, VPN use, and video conferencing at the same time can burden a home network, even with a fast service plan.
  2. Check both ends. Confirm that the router and device have usable Ethernet ports. Consult their manuals for model-specific details. If the device has no Ethernet port, the FCC suggests considering a USB Ethernet adapter; check that the adapter’s connector and operating-system support match your device.
  3. Check the route. Measure the path from router to device and consider whether the cable can be run safely without creating a trip hazard or an unacceptable obstruction.
  4. Try the connection. Connect the router and device with an Ethernet cable, then check whether the device recognizes the connection and whether the reliability or performance issue improves. Results vary by home; no single improvement is guaranteed.

If the real problem is Wi-Fi coverage

Wiring one device and improving coverage solve different problems. If Wi-Fi is weak in parts of the home, first consider placing the router centrally to maximize coverage. The FCC says 5 GHz Wi-Fi is faster but has shorter range than 2.4 GHz; it also identifies mesh routers and range extenders as possible ways to improve signal strength throughout the home. Neither coverage option guarantees a particular result in a particular layout.

If the issue is congestion rather than a weak signal, identify which stationary devices can practically use Ethernet. Moving one or more suitable devices off Wi-Fi may ease wireless demand, but it will not expand the internet service’s capacity.
