Ethernet Switch vs. Router: What Each Does on a Home Network

A router connects your home network to the internet; a standard Ethernet switch connects wired devices within the LAN and can add more wired ports.

A router connects your home network to other IP networks, commonly the internet. A standard Layer 2 Ethernet switch connects wired devices within your home network and forwards their traffic using MAC addresses. If your router’s LAN ports are full, connect a switch to one of them to add more wired connection points.

What does a router do?

A router moves IP traffic between different networks. In a typical home, it sits at the network edge and provides the path between your local network and the internet. Cisco describes routing as “the process of selecting and defining paths for IP-packet traffic within or between networks” in its What is Routing? explainer.

Computers, phones, printers, and other devices on your home network send traffic through the router when they need to reach an external network. A home router may also include Wi-Fi and other networking functions, but its routing role is what connects networks.

What does an Ethernet switch do?

A conventional Layer 2 Ethernet switch connects wired devices within one local-area network (LAN). It uses MAC addresses to identify devices and forward Ethernet frames to the appropriate connection. Cisco explains this role in What Is Network Switching?

NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Network Switch (GS305)
  • GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

A switch is generally used inside the LAN, where it links devices such as desktop computers, printers, and game consoles. An ordinary Layer 2 switch does not replace the router’s path to the internet: traffic leaving the home network still needs to pass through a router.

Switch vs. router: the practical difference

Question Router Standard Layer 2 switch
Main job Connects different IP networks, commonly the home LAN and the internet. Connects wired devices within one LAN.
How it forwards traffic Uses IP addresses to route packets between networks. Uses MAC addresses to forward Ethernet frames within the LAN.
Typical home-network position At the network edge, between the home network and external networks. Within the home LAN, connecting wired devices.
Why you might add one To establish or replace the routing function that connects networks. To provide more wired Ethernet connection points.

This comparison describes typical roles, not an absolute rule for every product. Some advanced Layer 3 switches can route traffic as well as switch it; Cisco outlines the broader capabilities in What is an Ethernet Switch?

Do you need a switch if you have a router?

Not necessarily. If the router has enough LAN ports for your wired devices, you can connect those devices directly to it. A switch is useful when you need more wired connections than the router provides.

How to connect a switch to a home router

  1. Connect your internet service to the router or gateway as directed by your provider.
  2. Run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the router to a port on the switch.
  3. Connect additional wired devices to the switch with Ethernet cables.

This is a common home and small-network setup; Cisco describes the connection pattern in How Does a Switch Work? If you are buying hardware for this purpose, an unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch is a category to consider when you simply need additional wired LAN ports. Check the switch and router specifications, port types, and cable requirements for your setup.

Does an Ethernet switch give you more internet ports?

It gives you more wired Ethernet connection points on your local network—not a new internet connection or a larger internet plan. The router remains the device that connects the LAN to external networks. Adding a switch also does not, by itself, improve Wi-Fi coverage. Actual wired performance depends on the router, switch, cabling, and connected devices; the category alone does not guarantee a particular speed.

Why device labels can be confusing

In a home, the modem, router, Wi-Fi access point, and switch may be separate devices or functions combined in an ISP gateway or consumer networking system. The name on the casing is not always enough to identify what a box does. Check its WAN and LAN ports and the manufacturer’s feature specifications before connecting it, especially if you are unsure whether it includes routing.
