A wired Ethernet problem does not automatically mean your computer’s LAN card has failed. First test a known-good cable and a different router or switch LAN port; then check whether the operating system detects the adapter, whether its driver is working, and what link speed it negotiates. Replace or repair the card only after those checks point to the computer’s Ethernet hardware.
First find out whether the fault affects one computer or the whole network
Check whether other devices on the same network can connect. If another computer works through the same router or switch, the fault is more likely to be in the original computer’s Ethernet path: its cable, port, adapter, settings, or driver. If several devices cannot connect, investigate the router, modem, or internet service instead. Microsoft recommends comparing with another device as an early isolation check.

Also distinguish “Ethernet not working” from “Ethernet connected but no internet.” A computer may have a working local Ethernet link while the router, modem, or ISP connection is down. The adapter’s link status alone cannot establish that internet access is available.
Check the cable and network port before changing computer hardware
- Make sure the Ethernet cable is firmly seated at both ends: at the computer or adapter and at the router or switch.
- At the router, use a LAN port, not the port marked Internet or WAN.
- Try another known-good Ethernet cable, then try a different LAN port on the router or switch.
- If possible, connect another computer to the same cable and port. This helps determine whether the network path works independently of the computer being diagnosed.
A dark link indicator does not prove that the LAN card is dead. A cable, connector, router or switch port, disabled adapter, or other device on the link may be responsible. Conversely, a lit indicator is not proof that data is communicating properly: Intel notes that a link light can be on even when communication with the link partner has not been established correctly. Treat indicator lights as clues, not a final diagnosis.

Apple’s guidance for external networking devices also recommends checking that equipment is powered and cabling is connected properly. Lenovo’s controller guidance identifies the cable, connector, and switch among possible causes when an indicator is off.
Check whether Windows detects the Ethernet adapter
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Look for the computer’s Ethernet adapter. If it appears disabled, use Device Manager’s enable option. If it shows a warning or error, note the message before changing anything.
- If the adapter is missing or has a problem, check the computer manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and its Ethernet driver. Driver availability and installation steps vary by computer and Windows version.
- Run Windows’ network troubleshooting flow. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Get Help troubleshooter; older Windows versions may show different troubleshooting steps.
If Windows is offline and a driver needs reinstalling, Microsoft advises obtaining the appropriate driver on another computer and transferring it. Prefer the computer maker’s model-specific driver when available rather than a generic third-party driver download. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11; it states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Check the Ethernet service and external adapter on a Mac
On a Mac, open System Settings > Network and inspect the Ethernet service or connected adapter. If you are using an external Ethernet device, check that it has power where applicable, that its cable is fully seated, and that the Mac recognizes it. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking indicator lights and restarting networking equipment in sequence, beginning with the internet-facing device and working toward the computer.

- 10 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the latest 10GBase-T Technology, TX401 delivers extreme speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is 10× faster than typical Gigabit adapters, guaranteeing smooth data transmissions for both internet access and local data transmissions[1]
- Versatile Compatibility: With extreme speed and ultra-low latency, 10GBase-T is backwards compatible with multiple data rates (10 Gbps, 5 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps), automatically negotiating between higher and lower speed connections
- QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
- Free CAT6A Ethernet Cable: To maximize TX401's performance, a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet Cable is included—rated for up to 10 Gbps while a regular cable is only rated for 1 Gbps
- Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases
A Mac without a built-in Ethernet port can use a compatible USB or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. Apple identifies USB-to-Ethernet and Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit-Ethernet options. Confirm that an adapter matches the Mac’s available connector and operating-system support, as well as the link speed you need.
Understand link speed before diagnosing a slow connection
Ethernet link speed is the negotiated rate between the computer’s adapter and the router or switch. It is not an internet speed test result. A computer can negotiate a fast local link and still have slow or unavailable internet service; it can also negotiate a lower local rate than expected even when the ISP connection is not the cause.

You can view the negotiated rate in the operating system or in a device interface. TP-Link’s guide, updated July 6, 2026, explains where to check it on Windows and Mac and distinguishes the local link rate from internet throughput. If the negotiated rate is lower than expected, check the capabilities and configuration of both ends of the Ethernet connection and the cable. Intel’s Gigabit-speed guidance specifically points to adapter properties and cable type for Intel adapter scenarios; those suggestions are not a guarantee for every make of network card.

Do not diagnose a failing LAN card just because an internet speed test is slow. First establish whether the local Ethernet link has negotiated the expected rate, then consider the router, modem, ISP service, and other parts of the network path.

Use another network path to test the computer’s Ethernet port
Once a known-good cable and router or switch port have been checked, try the computer on another working network path if one is available. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a useful comparison: if it connects through the same network path while the built-in Ethernet port does not, that is evidence pointing toward the computer’s built-in adapter path, though it does not by itself identify the exact failed component.
For a computer without a built-in Ethernet port, an external adapter is a way to add wired networking, not a repair for an onboard port. Choose one that matches the computer’s connector, operating-system support, and required Ethernet link speed.
When a LAN card replacement becomes reasonable
Consider manufacturer diagnostics or repair only after the cable and network port work with another device, the computer’s adapter and driver have been checked, and another network path helps isolate the fault to the computer. If the onboard adapter is still not detected or cannot establish a link with known-good equipment, consult the computer or motherboard manufacturer for model-specific diagnostics and repair options.
For a desktop, an internal PCIe Ethernet card may be a replacement route if the onboard port is confirmed faulty, but compatibility depends on the motherboard, operating system, available slot, and the required network speed. The checks above help establish whether replacement is warranted; they cannot determine compatibility for a particular system without its model details.
An Ethernet cable tester may be useful when diagnosing installed cabling, but it is optional for basic troubleshooting. A cable swap and a different router or switch port are simpler first checks.
