For a conventional Ethernet connection, copper cable is limited to a 100 m (328 ft) channel. Beyond that, the practical choices are usually a properly equipped fiber link or a purpose-built outdoor point-to-point wireless bridge—not simply a longer Ethernet cable or a household Wi-Fi extender. The best option depends on the route, the buildings, the required performance and whether you can install cable.
How far can an Ethernet cable run?
A conventional four-pair copper Ethernet channel has a maximum link length of 100 m (328 ft), according to Cisco’s 2023 physical-infrastructure guide, which references ANSI/TIA-568. That limit applies to the channel—including structured cabling and patch cords—not just one uninterrupted cable segment. It is not a safe assumption that an ordinary copper cable will deliver a reliable, standards-compliant connection when extended past the limit. Some specialized long-reach cabling solutions exist, but they are not a blanket exception for arbitrary cable runs. Cisco says these solutions should be third-party validated for the installation and their installed performance verified. Cable type, environment and installation conditions also matter.

| Option | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Four-pair copper Ethernet | A direct wired run within the 100 m (328 ft) channel limit | Channel length and installation conditions |
| Fiber Ethernet link | A longer wired route or one exposed to substantial electrical noise | Compatible optical interfaces or media conversion are needed at the endpoints |
| Outdoor point-to-point wireless bridge | A link between separate buildings or sites where running cable is difficult | Results depend on the selected equipment and site; endpoints must be installed appropriately |
| Standard Wi-Fi or mesh extension | Expanding local coverage around a building | Obstacles, distance and radio conditions; it is not the same as a dedicated building-to-building link |
When copper Ethernet is the better choice
Choose copper Ethernet when both endpoints can be connected within the 100 m (328 ft) channel limit and a cable route is practical. It provides a direct physical network connection, but exceeding the standard reach with an ordinary cable is not a dependable substitute for selecting a longer-distance medium.

When fiber is better for a long wired route
Fiber is a strong option when a wired connection must go beyond the conventional copper limit, or when electrical noise makes copper a poor fit. Cisco describes optical fiber as inherently noise immune, while noting that optical transceivers can be susceptible to electrical noise. Fiber does not plug directly into ordinary copper RJ45 ports: the endpoints need compatible optical transceivers or suitable media-conversion equipment. Check that the optics, fiber type and endpoint equipment are compatible before installation. Cisco’s guide to fiber and other media options.
Can Wi-Fi reach another building?
It can, but a remote-building connection is a different job from improving Wi-Fi coverage in a yard. A purpose-built outdoor point-to-point bridge places a device at each end of a dedicated wireless link. TP-Link recommends this approach for a secondary location beyond ordinary outdoor coverage; its guidance is a vendor recommendation, not a universal range guarantee. - Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
By contrast, a household router, mesh node or extender is intended to extend coverage from an existing network. Obstacles and site conditions affect what reaches the far end, and placing an ordinary extender farther away does not turn it into a dedicated bridge link.

How to choose for your site
- Measure the actual route. If the complete copper channel can stay within 100 m (328 ft), conventional Ethernet may be suitable. Include patch cords and structured cabling in the channel length.
- Decide whether the link must be wired. If cable can be installed and the distance exceeds the conventional copper limit, assess fiber and the compatible equipment needed at both ends.
- For separate buildings, assess a bridge link. Check the specific bridge’s installation and siting requirements, endpoint placement, local regulations and expected conditions at the site. Do not infer usable range or throughput from a headline product rate.
- Match the connection to the job. Use ordinary Wi-Fi or mesh extension for local coverage expansion; use a point-to-point bridge when the goal is a dedicated link between locations.
- Account for installation constraints. Compare route feasibility, interference exposure, endpoint placement, required throughput, cost and installation complexity before committing.
Bottom line by situation
- Within 100 m (328 ft), with a feasible cable route: conventional copper Ethernet is the straightforward wired option.
- Beyond that distance, with a feasible wired route: consider fiber with compatible optical equipment.
- Between separate buildings where cable installation is difficult: consider a purpose-built outdoor point-to-point bridge, after checking the chosen model and site requirements.
- For better coverage around one building: standard Wi-Fi or mesh extension is the relevant category, not a building-to-building bridge.
