Neither is universally better: cable count and thickness, access needs, mounting method, and surface all affect the right choice.

When Ethernet cable clips make sense
Clips are a good fit for a limited run along a desk, trim, or another route where visible cable is acceptable and discrete fastening points are enough. They hold the wire in place without adding a continuous cover. HellermannTyton lists adhesive and screwable clip options, including designs that allow cable replacement: HellermannTyton cable clips.

Then decide whether adhesive or mechanical fixing suits the installation surface. Adhesive products are not interchangeable: the adhesive type affects operating temperature and initial hold, and results depend on the particular product and surface. Do not assume an adhesive clip will come off cleanly.

When an Ethernet cable raceway makes sense
Choose a surface raceway when hiding the run matters or when you want several cables together in a channel. Legrand’s raceway guidance covers communication wiring, including Ethernet, and advises selecting capacity according to cable number and thickness: Legrand raceway guidance.
Not every cord cover is suitable for every cable or setting. Plan the route before buying
- Measure the run and identify corners, ends, and any transitions that may need compatible bends or connectors.
- Check the channel’s dimensions and stated capacity against the cables’ number and thickness.
- Confirm the product’s stated cable use and location rating, then check its mounting instructions for your surface.
Mounting and temperature details to check
For the adhesive examples described by HellermannTyton, its acrylate adhesive clips have a manufacturer-stated operating range of −40 to 85 °C, while its synthetic-rubber adhesive clips have a range of −40 to 60 °C. HellermannTyton says the synthetic-rubber type needs several hours of bond time; the acrylate type has higher initial adhesion and can be used immediately. These specifications apply to the described products, not to adhesive clips generally: HellermannTyton cable clip guidance.
For either clips or raceways, follow the specific product’s installation directions. Adhesive performance, removability, and the risk of surface damage vary by product and surface; the cited guidance does not establish a universal result.

Consumer raceways are not all network pathways
A small surface raceway for a home Ethernet run is different from a structured-cabling pathway designed for larger installations.
