You can get exposure to ether either by buying ETH directly or by buying shares in a spot ether exchange-traded product (ETP) through a brokerage account. Direct ownership involves decisions about crypto platforms and wallet keys; an ETP share is a security with its own fees, custody arrangements, and trading price. Compare the product’s current prospectus and costs with the custody and transaction costs of direct ETH before deciding.
Is buying ETH the same as buying an ether ETF?
No. With direct ETH, you own ether through an exchange or custodian, or control access to it using wallet keys. With an ether ETP, you own shares in a product—not ether in your personal wallet. A spot ether ETP’s structure and the rights attached to its shares are set out in its prospectus.

People often say “ether ETF” informally, but the SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin describes spot bitcoin and ether products as exchange-traded products. It says they register offerings or securities under federal securities laws, but are not registered as investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. The ETP label therefore does not mean that every protection or feature associated with a mutual fund applies.
How do direct ETH and ether ETP shares compare?
| Consideration | Direct ETH | Ether ETP shares |
|---|---|---|
| What you own | Ether held through a platform or accessed using wallet keys. | Shares in a trust or other product, governed by its prospectus. |
| Custody | You choose a platform or take responsibility for your own keys. | The product’s sponsor and custodians handle assets under its disclosed arrangements; you hold shares through a brokerage account. |
| Potential costs | Platform, custody, and network transaction costs may apply; check the current terms for the service and transaction. | Sponsor expenses and brokerage costs may apply. Sponsor fees reduce the exposure represented by shares over time. |
| Price exposure | You hold ETH itself, subject to the price and execution conditions of the venue you use. | Shares may trade above or below net asset value (NAV), so the share price may not match the value of the ether exposure exactly. |
| Staking | Availability depends on the platform or technical arrangement, with related risks. | Whether staking is permitted or intended depends on the specific product’s terms. |
| Key documents | Platform custody and fee terms; wallet security information if you self-custody. | The product’s current prospectus, fee schedule, and brokerage terms. |
The SEC Investor.gov bulletin, an iShares preliminary prospectus dated July 31, 2026, and Grayscale’s 2025 annual filing (filed in 2026) illustrate why product-specific documents matter. The iShares filing is preliminary and subject to completion, so its terms may change; do not treat it as a final description of every ether ETP.

Do you need a wallet to invest in Ethereum?
Not if you buy shares in an ETP through a brokerage account. If you buy ETH directly, you will need a way to hold or access it, but that does not always mean managing a personal wallet: a crypto platform or custodian may hold it for you.
What a wallet does
A crypto wallet stores the private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets; it does not literally contain the assets themselves. Investor.gov warns that losing or compromising those credentials can mean losing access to the assets, potentially permanently. In self-custody, safeguarding the keys is your responsibility.

When a hardware wallet may fit
A hardware wallet is an optional physical tool for people who choose self-custody. It is not needed to buy an ETP, and using one does not eliminate scams, user mistakes, or every risk of key loss. No particular brand or model is recommended here.

- Network transaction costs: A transaction that uses Ethereum may incur a network fee. The amount for a particular transaction is not established here; check an up-to-date source for the network and the transaction conditions before acting.
- Trading and platform costs: A crypto platform or brokerage may charge costs for buying, selling, or holding an investment. Check the provider’s current terms rather than assuming trading is free.
- ETP sponsor expenses: The product’s fee reduces the ether exposure represented by shares over time. Brokerage costs may be separate. Read the current prospectus and fee schedule for the exact product, since fees and any waivers can differ and change.
This article does not give a live gas estimate or explain a current fee-calculation formula. The materials cited here do not establish those details well enough to give a reliable numeric example. Similarly, they do not establish tax treatment for ETH transactions, staking, or ETP shares. Tax rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances; consult current guidance from the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional.
Can you stake ETH through an ether ETP?
Do not assume so. Staking policy is product-specific and can change. The filings reviewed show different approaches: Grayscale’s 2025 annual filing, filed in 2026, discusses possible loss of staked ether and variable periods when it may be inaccessible; an iShares preliminary prospectus dated July 31, 2026, said the trust did not then intend to stake its ether. That prospectus is preliminary, so verify the final, current terms for any product you are considering.

Direct ETH staking is also arrangement-dependent. Whether offered through a platform or another method, it can involve technical and counterparty risks; do not treat a staking option as a guaranteed return or assume that staked assets will always be immediately available.
What risks come with ETH and ether ETPs?
The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy urged investors in its September 9, 2024 Investor Bulletin to weigh carefully the potential risks and benefits of products providing exposure to bitcoin or ether. It also describes bitcoin and ether as highly speculative investments. Neither holding ETH directly nor buying an ETP removes the underlying price risk.
- Price volatility: The value of ETH can change sharply. Past performance does not predict future returns.
- Key and custody risk: With self-custody, lost, stolen, destroyed, or compromised keys can cause permanent loss of access. Custodial services and ETPs change who holds the assets or keys, but introduce their own operational, sponsor, or custodian risks.
- Product and trading risk: ETP fees reduce exposure over time, and shares can trade at a premium or discount to NAV. Product terms, trading conditions, and the underlying ether value all matter.
- Staking risk: Where a product stakes ether, the relevant filings identify potential loss and periods of restricted access. Read the specific product’s current disclosures.
How should you choose between direct ETH and an ether ETP?
- Decide what you want to own. Choose whether you want ether itself or shares in a securities product with its own structure and terms.
- Compare the complete costs. For direct ETH, check platform, custody, and any transaction costs. For an ETP, check its current sponsor fee and brokerage costs; look for any waiver and its duration in the product’s documents.
- Assess custody responsibilities. Decide whether you are prepared to protect wallet keys yourself or prefer platform custody or an ETP’s fund-level custody arrangements.
- Read the current product documents. For an ETP, verify the prospectus, fee schedule, custody disclosures, staking policy, and risks. A preliminary filing is not final terms.
- Consider how you will trade and hold it. Direct ETH involves the venue and custody method you select. For ETP shares, consider brokerage access and whether the market price is above or below NAV.
- Check tax rules separately. Do not assume that direct ETH, staking, and ETP shares receive identical tax treatment; consult current guidance for your jurisdiction.
These are different routes to ether exposure, not interchangeable wrappers. Choose only after you understand what you will own, how it will be held, and which costs and risks apply to that specific route.
