Since The Merge, its current block reward is best understood as variable proof-of-stake compensation for validators carrying out protocol duties. It is not a fixed amount of newly created ETH per block, and it is separate from transaction tips and MEV-related income.
What does “Ethereum block reward” mean now?
The phrase has two meanings. Historically, it referred to the new ETH paid to proof-of-work miners for mining blocks. Today, people often use it more broadly for the compensation validators receive for proof-of-stake duties. The second meaning is current, but “validator rewards” is more precise: rewards are tied to protocol work and some are accounted for at epoch checkpoints, not simply paid as one fixed sum for every block.

Ethereum validators perform duties such as attesting to blocks and, when selected, proposing a block. The protocol calculates consensus-layer rewards using a base reward linked to a validator’s effective balance and the total active balance. Ethereum’s proof-of-stake rewards and penalties documentation describes the reward formula; its block-proposal documentation explains the proposer’s role.

Is the 2 ETH block reward still paid?
No. The often-cited 2 ETH figure was a proof-of-work mining reward after the Constantinople upgrade in 2019. It is historical, not the current Ethereum block reward. After The Merge, execution-layer proof-of-work issuance stopped; new ETH issuance continues on the consensus layer for validator rewards. Ethereum.org’s explanation of The Merge’s effect on ETH supply distinguishes the former mining reward from current issuance.

How do validator rewards work?
Rewards depend on stake and protocol duties
A validator’s base reward is calculated from its effective balance, a protocol reward factor, reward-period parameters, and the square root of the total active balance. The documentation lists base_reward_factor = 64 and base_rewards_per_epoch = 4. In practical terms, the reward is not a universal per-block rate: both an individual validator’s balance and the network’s overall active stake matter. Aggregate issuance and an individual validator’s reward can therefore change differently as participation changes.
Performance affects what a validator receives
Validators are rewarded for completing duties consistently with protocol rules. Missing a duty can mean missing its reward, while certain failures can incur penalties. There is no single guaranteed APR or fixed ETH payout that applies to every validator: reward rates depend in part on how much ETH is staked and on performance. The Ethereum Launchpad validator FAQs discuss this variability and the timing of rewards and penalties.

How are issuance, tips, and MEV different?
Not all income associated with a block is a block reward in the sense of newly issued ETH. Consensus-layer issuance creates new ETH for validator duties. A proposer may also receive transaction priority fees and MEV-related income, but these are transfers of existing ETH rather than new issuance. Ethereum.org’s technical introduction to ether distinguishes issuance from tips and MEV.
| Value | What it is | Current status |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus-layer issuance | New ETH issued as compensation for proof-of-stake duties | Current; variable rather than a fixed amount per block |
| Priority fee (tip) | Existing ETH paid by a transaction sender to the block producer | Current; transaction income, not new issuance |
| MEV-related income | Existing ETH transferred through transactions associated with block production | Current; separate from protocol issuance |
| 2 ETH mining reward | Historical proof-of-work subsidy after the Constantinople upgrade in 2019 | No longer paid under proof of stake |
Under EIP-1559, the base fee is burned and the priority fee goes to the block producer. Ethereum’s block documentation describes the fee-recipient account used for transaction fees.

What to remember
- Ethereum’s current block reward means variable proof-of-stake validator compensation, not a fixed payout for every block.
- The 2 ETH figure describes an old proof-of-work mining reward and is not current.
- Newly issued ETH, transaction tips, and MEV-related income are different sources of value; only issuance creates new ETH.
