EssentialsX Protect—often called “EssentialsProtect”—is an add-on module for EssentialsX that applies server-wide rules for environmental damage, mob spawning and selected mechanics. Install the EssentialsX core and Protect jar together, then edit the protect: section in plugins/Essentials/config.yml. Restart the server after installation and after configuration changes; use a full restart when a reload does not apply a setting.

This guide explains the installation workflow, the three Protect subsections, safe YAML editing, testing, troubleshooting and the important boundary between server-wide controls and region protection.

EssentialsX Protect is not a separate, standalone protection plugin. It is an add-on module that works with the main EssentialsX installation and reads its settings from the same Essentials configuration file. The module is intended for broad, server-wide behavior such as stopping environmental block damage, restricting certain mob-spawn methods or disabling selected mechanics.
The common shorthand “EssentialsProtect” refers to this module, but the official name used in current listings is EssentialsX Protect. Installing only the Protect jar without the EssentialsX core is therefore an incomplete setup.

Protect is also not a region-protection system. Its settings affect the server or worlds according to the options exposed by your installed EssentialsX version; it does not provide the detailed per-region ownership, flags and build permissions associated with a dedicated region-management plugin. If you need one area to allow explosions while another forbids them, use a region-protection solution such as WorldGuard alongside EssentialsX rather than trying to force Protect to perform that job.
Before you install
Check the server layout
These instructions assume a Bukkit-compatible server with a standard plugins/ directory, such as a Paper or Spigot-based installation. Exact Minecraft and server-version compatibility was not established by the available documentation, so check the release notes for the EssentialsX build you intend to use before copying jars to a production server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBack up the configuration
Stop the server cleanly and copy the complete plugins/Essentials/ directory somewhere outside the live server folder. At minimum, preserve config.yml and kits.yml. A backup gives you a way to recover from a YAML indentation mistake or an option change that produces an unwanted game rule.
Prepare a safe editor
Use a code-aware text editor such as Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. Do not edit YAML in a word processor. YAML is indentation-sensitive: use spaces, never tab characters, and keep the indentation pattern already present in the file.
Install EssentialsX Protect
- Obtain matching jars. Download the EssentialsX core and the EssentialsX Protect module versions intended to work together. Keep the original filenames so that the server can identify the plugins normally.
- Stop the server. Do not copy or replace plugin jars while the server is writing files.
- Open the server’s plugin directory. This is normally
plugins/in the directory that contains the server jar and startup script. - Copy both jars. Place the EssentialsX core jar and the Protect jar directly in
plugins/, not in a nested folder. If you already have an older copy, remove or archive it so two versions are not loaded at once. - Start the server and watch the console. EssentialsX should load its modules and create its configuration files. On the first boot, the core creates
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlandplugins/Essentials/kits.yml. - Stop the server again before editing. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when EssentialsX saves its configuration.
Use a restart rather than /reload for the initial installation. A complete stop-and-start gives the plugin loader a clean opportunity to register the core and module and avoids the class-loader problems commonly associated with server reloads.
Find the Protect configuration
Open plugins/Essentials/config.yml and search for the literal text protect:. One published guide places this block around line 935, but line numbers change as EssentialsX versions add or remove settings. Searching for the key is more reliable than jumping to a fixed line.

The block is organized into three conceptual subsections:
| Section | Purpose | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
prevent: |
Stops environmental damage or block-changing events. | Preventing creepers from damaging blocks or limiting fire spread. |
spawn: |
Controls selected mob-spawn routes. | Restricting spawn eggs when players misuse them. |
disable: |
Turns off selected mechanics. | Disabling fire damage with the firedmg option shown in this subsection. |
The exact option names and default values under these headings can differ by EssentialsX release. The currently available documentation does not verify every key in a live, current configuration file. Treat the comments and keys generated by your own installation as authoritative: edit an existing option, preserve its spelling and indentation, and do not invent a key simply because a web example uses a different version.
Configure the three Protect sections
Prevent: environmental and block damage
Use prevent: for events where the goal is to stop damage or block changes caused by the environment or entities. Creeper block damage is the common example. Fire spread and similar environmental effects are also described under this category in EssentialsX Protect documentation.
To configure it, expand the existing prevent: mapping and read the comments beside each option. Set the relevant boolean value to the state you want, keeping the same indentation as neighboring entries. For a server where creepers should still hurt players but must not destroy structures, choose the block-damage control rather than a general creature or combat setting. The option names are version-dependent, so confirm the key in your generated file before saving.

A setting that prevents block damage may still allow entity damage, knockback or sound effects; Protect’s individual switches should not be assumed to cover every part of an event.
Spawn: control mob spawning methods
The spawn: subsection is for controlling which mobs can spawn through supported methods. A practical use is restricting spawn eggs on a public server where players can otherwise create large numbers of mobs or bypass the intended progression.

Read the generated comments to determine whether an option applies to natural spawning, spawn eggs or another route. Do not infer that blocking one method blocks all methods. Test each route relevant to your server—natural spawning, a dispenser, a spawn egg and any administrative command you permit—because a restriction aimed at one source may leave another source unchanged.
Disable: turn off selected mechanics
The disable: subsection contains switches for mechanics that you want turned off rather than merely protected against damage. The documented example is firedmg, which controls fire damage. If your objective is that players should not take fire damage, look for that option under disable: and change only its value.
Fire damage and fire spread are different outcomes. A fire-damage switch can affect entities while leaving flames and spread mechanics active; a prevent option can address environmental spread without changing how entities receive damage. Decide which outcome you need and configure the corresponding existing option instead of assuming one setting covers both.
Safe YAML editing procedure
- Make a copy. Duplicate
config.ymlbefore changing it, for example asconfig.yml.backup. - Search, do not scroll blindly. Find
protect:, then identify the nestedprevent:,spawn:anddisable:mappings. - Preserve hierarchy. A child option must remain indented farther than its parent. Match the number of spaces used by nearby entries.
- Use spaces only. A tab can make the file invalid even when it looks aligned in the editor.
- Change one related setting at a time. This makes it possible to identify which option caused an unexpected result.
- Keep value types intact. If the generated file uses a boolean such as
trueorfalse, do not replace it with a quoted word or a number. - Save as plain text. Keep the filename exactly
config.ymland avoid an accidental.txtextension. - Check the server console on startup. A YAML parse or indentation error normally appears while Essentials loads. If the plugin reports a configuration error, stop the server and restore the backup or correct the indicated line before trying again.
Do not copy an entire configuration block from an unrelated EssentialsX version unless you have verified every key. Generated comments are valuable because they describe the options supported by the version actually running on your server.
Apply changes: reload or restart
After editing, you can try the Essentials reload command:
/essentials reload
Run it from the console or in-game with the permission required by your server’s EssentialsX setup. A reload is convenient for a small configuration change, but published setup guidance warns that it may not apply every Protect setting. If the behavior does not change, perform a full server restart. Stop the server cleanly, start it again, and inspect the startup log for configuration errors.

Never use a reload as a substitute for the restart required when adding or replacing plugin jars. The installation step should always be followed by a complete restart.
Verify the result with a controlled test
Test in a temporary world or a locked-off area with a backup available. Use an operator account or another account authorized to perform the test, and remove test mobs and fire afterward.
- Record the baseline. Before editing, note what happens when the relevant event occurs. For example, test whether a creeper damages blocks, whether fire spreads and whether a player takes fire damage.
- Change one option. Edit only the relevant key in the appropriate subsection.
- Apply the configuration. Run
/essentials reload; if there is no visible change, restart the server. - Repeat the same event. Use the same world, location and event source so the comparison is meaningful.
- Test adjacent behavior. If you changed a creeper-damage option, check both block damage and player damage. If you changed a spawn setting, test the specific spawn method it is meant to govern.
- Check unrelated worlds. Because Protect is intended for broad server-level controls, confirm whether the setting affects every world where you expected it to apply.
Keep a short change log containing the date, the option changed, whether a reload or restart was used and the observed result. This is especially useful when several administrators maintain the same server.

The Protect section is missing
Confirm that the EssentialsX core and Protect jars are both in plugins/, that the server was restarted after installation and that Essentials loaded without an error. If the files were copied while the server was running, stop it, verify the jars and start again. A missing block can also indicate that the module did not load or that you are looking at a different configuration file than the one used by the active server instance.
Essentials reports a YAML or configuration error
Stop the server and inspect the last edited area. Look for a tab, a missing colon, an accidentally deleted parent key or inconsistent indentation. Restore the backup if you cannot identify the mistake, then reapply one change carefully using spaces. Start the server and confirm that Essentials loads before testing gameplay.
The setting appears correct but behavior is unchanged
- Run a full restart; a reload may not apply every Protect option.
- Verify that you edited
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlfor the server instance that is actually running. - Check the exact key and subsection generated by your EssentialsX version instead of relying on a copied example.
- Test the correct event. Fire damage, fire spread and block damage are separate outcomes.
- Look for another plugin or a world-specific rule changing the same behavior.
A setting works in one area but not another
Protect is not a region manager. A different plugin, world configuration or region flag may be taking precedence in the area you tested. Use your region-protection tool for per-area rules and reserve EssentialsX Protect for the broad controls it exposes.

Old screenshots do not match your panel
Control panels and file browsers change over time. One older setup guide was written for a former hosting-panel layout, so its screenshots and navigation may not match your host. The stable parts of the workflow are the server’s plugins/ directory, the generated plugins/Essentials/config.yml file, the protect: search and the restart requirement.
Protect versus region protection
| Need | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Stop a class of environmental damage across a server | EssentialsX Protect | Its prevent: controls are designed for broad environmental and block-damage behavior. |
| Restrict selected mob-spawn methods globally | EssentialsX Protect | Use the supported options under spawn:. |
| Disable a mechanic such as fire damage server-wide | EssentialsX Protect | Use the relevant switch under disable:, such as the documented firedmg option. |
| Allow different rules in towns, arenas or protected builds | A region-protection plugin such as WorldGuard | Protect does not provide region boundaries, ownership or per-region flags. |
You can use both approaches together. Configure the global baseline with EssentialsX Protect, then use region rules for exceptions or special areas. When diagnosing a conflict, identify which plugin owns the behavior and test in a location without a region rule.
Maintenance and upgrades
Keep a dated backup of plugins/Essentials/config.yml before upgrading EssentialsX or the Protect module. Compare the newly generated configuration with your saved version instead of blindly replacing one with the other. New releases can add, rename or remove options, and the exact line position of protect: can change.
After an upgrade, search for protect: again, read the comments supplied by the new file and retest every behavior your server depends on. Compatibility with a particular Minecraft release or Paper/Spigot build was not established in the available material, so consult the release information for your exact server version before upgrading a live world.
Keep the configuration readable for the next administrator: retain the generated comments, avoid unrelated formatting changes and record why a non-default value exists. If a setting is no longer needed, change it deliberately and test the result rather than deleting an unfamiliar line.
Quick Recap
Quick reference checklist
- EssentialsX core is installed alongside the Protect module.
- Both jars are in the server’s
plugins/directory. - The server was restarted after installation.
- The active file is
plugins/Essentials/config.yml. - The
protect:block was found by searching, not by assuming a fixed line number. - The relevant subsection is selected:
prevent:,spawn:ordisable:. - Only existing keys from the generated file were edited.
- YAML uses spaces, consistent indentation and valid value types.
- A backup exists before every substantial change.
- The change was applied with a reload and, if necessary, a full restart.
- The exact event and any adjacent behavior were tested.
- Region-specific requirements are handled by a region-protection plugin, not Protect.
