A smart plug can cut and restore power to a server plugged into it, but it does not establish that the server has failed—and it cannot be controlled remotely if its own network or control path is unavailable. Choose based on what has failed and what kind of reset you need.
What each option actually reboots
The word “watchdog” can suggest a device watching over an entire system. In this comparison, however, the ESP32 watchdog is a hardware timer inside the ESP32 microcontroller. Its job is to detect certain failures in the ESP32’s own operation and trigger a configured response. It does not restart another computer merely because that computer is connected to it.

A smart plug has a different role: it switches electrical power to the load connected to it. If a server is plugged into a compatible smart plug, switching the plug off and back on interrupts and restores that server’s power. The plug’s ability to do so is not the same as knowing whether the server is healthy.

| Question | ESP32 watchdog | Smart plug |
|---|---|---|
| What does it reset? | The ESP32, according to the configured watchdog stage and action. | It switches power to the connected load, such as a server. |
| What makes it act? | A configured watchdog condition, such as software not feeding the timer as expected. | A person or an automation sends an on/off command; the plug is not documented here as a server-health monitor. |
| What does it depend on? | The ESP32’s firmware and configured watchdog behavior. | The plug, its network connection, and a working control path for remote commands. |
| Does it itself provide server health monitoring? | No. The watchdog covers the ESP32’s configured failure conditions, not a separate server by default. | No. Remote switching is not evidence that the server is unresponsive. |
| Can it interrupt server power? | Not on its own. | Yes, if the server is connected to a suitable plug and electrical setup. |
For a remote reboot, first distinguish a restart of the controller from a power-cycle of the server. An ESP32 watchdog suits the former. A smart plug can perform the latter, but a separate decision-maker still has to determine when to switch it.

How the ESP32 watchdog works—and where it stops
Espressif’s ESP32 Series Datasheet, version 5.3, describes two Main Watchdog Timers in the timer modules and one RTC Watchdog Timer. The watchdogs are intended to recover from unforeseen application faults. Their configurable stages can take actions including an interrupt, CPU reset, core reset, or system reset; only the RTC watchdog can trigger a system reset of the ESP32.
That scope matters. If an ESP32 is acting as a separate monitoring controller, its internal watchdog may help recover the controller if the controller itself gets stuck. It does not, simply by existing, check a server’s availability, decide whether a failure is serious, or switch the server’s power. Those would require a monitoring mechanism and a control interface beyond the on-chip watchdog.
The watchdog types have different jobs
Espressif’s ESP-IDF release-v5.5 watchdog guide distinguishes watchdog functions in the ESP-IDF environment:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Interrupt watchdog: protects against interrupt service routines being blocked for too long. Espressif describes its role as ensuring that “ISRs (Interrupt Service Routines) are not blocked for a prolonged period of time.”
- Task watchdog: detects tasks that run too long without yielding.
- RTC watchdog: normally tracks boot time until the user’s main function. By default, it is disabled immediately before that function runs.
These mechanisms are about the ESP32’s execution and boot behavior. A server that is frozen while the ESP32 remains responsive is outside their direct scope. Conversely, if the ESP32 monitor is the part that has hung, a configured watchdog may help it recover—but that alone does not prove the server has restarted.

Boot recovery is not ongoing server supervision
During SPI flash boot, the RTC watchdog and first Main Watchdog start automatically to detect and recover from boot problems, according to the ESP32 datasheet. That is useful for the microcontroller’s own boot path. It should not be confused with continuous checking of another machine after the ESP32 has started, or with a mechanism to power-cycle that machine.
The ESP32 Technical Reference Manual also covers watchdog timers; the cited manual is version 5.7. The details of a real implementation depend on the chip, firmware framework, watchdog configuration, and the external monitoring and control hardware. Do not infer a complete server-recovery design from the presence of watchdog timers alone.
What a smart plug can and cannot do
A smart plug is the more direct of these two choices when the required action is to interrupt the server’s AC power and restore it remotely. TP-Link describes the Kasa HS103 as a Wi-Fi smart plug that can remotely control connected devices and schedule devices to switch on or off. Remote control still depends on the plug and its control path being available.
In its remote-control guide, TP-Link says remote access can control Kasa devices, including plugs, from away from home. The same guide covers control failures and devices reported as “Local Only,” illustrating that remote access is a dependency, not a guarantee. The guide was last updated July 1, 2026. See TP-Link’s Kasa remote-control troubleshooting guide.

A plug switches power; it does not diagnose a hang
A person can decide to switch a plug after noticing that a server is unreachable. An automation could also issue a command if it has a way to detect a condition and a rule for responding. But the cited product information describes remote switching and schedules, not server-health detection. A scheduled off/on cycle is not equivalent to detecting that a server has stopped responding; it may interrupt a healthy server just as readily as an unhealthy one.
A responsive plug also does not prove the target server is functioning. The phone app may be able to communicate with the plug while the server is frozen, shut down, or disconnected. The reverse failure is possible too: the server could need a power-cycle while the plug cannot be reached because its network or remote-control path has failed.
Check load ratings and power-loss consequences
TP-Link’s HS103 product page calls the model a light-duty plug and lists a maximum load of 10 A resistive at 120 VAC. This is a manufacturer specification for that model, not a blanket endorsement for every server power supply or installation. A resistive-load rating does not establish suitability for a particular server’s load characteristics. Verify the current documentation for the exact plug, the server’s requirements, local electrical rules, and any relevant load limits before connecting equipment. The page is TP-Link’s HS103 product information; current availability is not established here.

Switching a plug off is an abrupt power interruption, not an orderly operating-system shutdown. The cited materials do not quantify filesystem, hardware, or workload risks for a particular server. Consider what the server is doing, how it behaves after power loss, and whether it is designed to restart automatically when power returns. Do not assume that repeated hard power-cycles are harmless or that a plug can substitute for a graceful shutdown path.

Choose by the failure you need to recover from
| Situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The ESP32 monitor itself can stop making progress. | ESP32 watchdog, if configured for the relevant failure. | It can trigger a configured recovery action for the ESP32; it will not, on its own, reboot the server. |
| The server needs an operator-accessible way to lose and regain power. | Compatible smart plug. | It can switch the connected load, subject to electrical suitability and remote-control availability. |
| You want the server to be detected as unhealthy and automatically power-cycled. | Neither device alone. | A separate health check, decision rule, and suitable control path are required; the cited materials do not validate a particular ESP32-plus-plug design. |
| The server should be shut down cleanly before power is removed. | Neither device alone establishes a safe graceful shutdown. | A power switch can interrupt power; an on-chip watchdog resets the ESP32, not the server’s operating system. |
| The internet or plug-control path may fail during the incident. | Neither guarantees remote recovery. | A remotely controlled plug depends on its network and control path; an ESP32 watchdog only handles its own configured conditions. |
If the main objective is “how can I remotely power-cycle a home server?”, a smart plug is the simpler category-level answer, provided the electrical match is appropriate and you accept a power interruption. If the objective is to make a DIY monitor controller recover from its own firmware lockup, the ESP32 watchdog addresses that narrower problem. If you need automatic server recovery, plan for both fault detection and the reset action rather than treating either component as a complete solution.
Set up remote smart-plug control
For a Kasa example, TP-Link’s setup guide describes using the Kasa app, a TP-Link account, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Exact screens and requirements can vary by model or change over time, so follow the current instructions for the plug you own. The cited guide, last updated April 17, 2026, is TP-Link’s Kasa smart-plug setup walkthrough.
- Confirm electrical compatibility first. Check the plug’s current model documentation, voltage and load limits, server power requirements, and local requirements. Do not rely on the HS103’s stated 10 A resistive at 120 VAC figure as a general server rating.
- Install and configure the plug using its maker’s current instructions. For the cited Kasa setup, that means the Kasa app, a TP-Link account, and the example’s 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi setup. Complete configuration before relying on remote switching.
- Test control while you are present. Confirm that the app can switch the plug on and off, and determine what the server does when power is restored. Avoid testing with unsaved work or an active workload.
- Test remote access separately. Away-from-home control depends on more than local pairing. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide addresses remote-control errors and the “Local Only” state; consult it if remote commands fail.
- Use the power cycle only when appropriate. If a graceful shutdown is possible, prefer it to cutting power. If the server cannot be shut down normally, consider the workload and recovery consequences before switching the plug.
A successful app test demonstrates that the plug can be controlled in that test; it does not demonstrate server-health monitoring, guaranteed availability during a future fault, or safety for every power-loss scenario.
Plan an ESP32-based recovery system without confusing its parts
An ESP32 can be one component in a larger monitoring arrangement, but the watchdog is not the whole arrangement. Before building one, define the fault it is meant to handle and separate three responsibilities:
Best Value
- Voice control: Kasa smart plugs that work with Alexa and Google Home Assistant. Enjoy the hands free convenience of controlling any home electronic appliances with your voice via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
- Easy set up and use: 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection required. Plug in, open the case app, follow the simple instructions and enjoy. Kasa app reqiured
- Scheduling: Use timer or countdown schedules set your smart plug to automatically turn on and off any home electronic appliances such as lamps, fan, humidifier, Christmas lights etc.
- Smart Outlet Control from Anywhere: Turn electronics on and off from anywhere with your smartphone using the Kasa app, whether you are at home, in the office or on vacation.
- Trusted and Reliable: Kasa is trusted by over 6 Million users and being the Reader’s Choice of PCMag 2020. UL certified for safety use. 2-year warranty.
- Monitor: Decide what observable evidence would indicate that the server is not operating as required. A watchdog configured inside the ESP32 does not supply that server-health signal.
- Decide: Set a rule for when the observed condition warrants action, including how to avoid responding to a temporary loss of visibility as if it were a confirmed failure.
- Act: Provide a control path capable of performing the intended recovery. If the action is to remove server power, it must be electrically suitable and account for the abrupt interruption.
Then configure the ESP32 watchdog for the controller’s own failure modes, using the relevant chip and framework documentation. That adds a recovery mechanism for a stuck controller; it does not validate the server monitor, the decision rule, or the external switching hardware. The sources cited here do not establish a particular ESP32-plus-smart-plug implementation that detects and safely resolves every server fault.
Think through what can fail together
- Server failure, controller healthy: A watchdog may never fire if the ESP32 continues running normally. A separate server check and an action path would be needed.
- Controller failure: The ESP32 watchdog may recover the ESP32 for a configured failure condition. Whether server recovery follows depends on the rest of the system.
- Plug or network unreachable: A remote command may not reach the plug. Remote-control troubleshooting can help identify connectivity problems, but does not make the control path independent of the network.
- Power restored, server does not resume service: A power cycle is not proof of a successful boot or restored service. The cited materials do not specify server behavior after power restoration; verify it for the particular server and operating system.
These cases are why “automatic reboot” needs a precise definition. It can mean restarting the ESP32, toggling a server’s power, gracefully restarting the server operating system, or confirming that a service is available again. Those are different actions and outcomes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling an ESP32 watchdog a server watchdog: Its documented watchdog functions monitor the ESP32’s own execution and boot conditions.
- Assuming a smart plug recognizes a frozen server: Remote switching and schedules do not establish server-health monitoring.
- Treating “remote” as “always reachable”: The plug’s network and control service must be available. A “Local Only” state or other remote-access fault can prevent away-from-home control.
- Using a rating as a universal compatibility guarantee: The HS103 specification is 10 A resistive at 120 VAC and the product is described as light-duty; check actual equipment and local requirements.
- Equating a power cut with a clean reboot: Power interruption is not an orderly operating-system shutdown and may affect active work.
- Assuming one recovery layer solves every outage: Monitoring, decision-making, controller recovery, remote command delivery, and server restart are separate parts of the problem.
The right choice is therefore conditional, not a contest between interchangeable devices: use the ESP32 watchdog to recover the ESP32 from configured faults, and use a suitable smart plug when you need a means to interrupt and restore power to a connected server. For automatic server recovery, neither is sufficient by itself.
