Pico W is a specific Raspberry Pi board based on RP2040, while ESP32 refers to a family of chips and boards. Your best choice depends on the exact ESP32 model, radio workload, peripherals, sleep-and-wake pattern, and—most importantly—the measured current of the complete board in your intended setup. Published chip sleep figures alone cannot predict battery life.
What are you comparing?
Raspberry Pi Pico W pairs an RP2040 microcontroller with a CYW43439 wireless chip connected over SPI. Raspberry Pi documents 2.4 GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.2 functionality for the board. See the Pico board documentation and the Pico W datasheet.

ESP32 is a product family, not one board with one power profile. The cited sleep and Wi-Fi figures below are from Espressif’s ESP32-PICO Series Datasheet v1.3; they should not be assumed to describe every ESP32 chip or development board. Check the exact variant’s datasheet, wireless capabilities, software support, and the board’s power circuitry before choosing.

How do the published power figures compare?
The figures are useful for understanding chip behavior, but they are not a fair board-to-board test. One is an RP2040 typical deep-sleep figure; the others are ESP32-PICO chip specifications for particular modes. None predicts the runtime of a complete development board in a real wireless project.

| Measure | RP2040 in Pico W | ESP32-PICO | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep sleep | About 180 µA typical for RP2040, depending on process, voltage, and temperature; Raspberry Pi recommends powering off the system or RP2040 to minimize current. | 10 µA with RTC timer and RTC memory; 5 µA with RTC timer only. | These are chip/mode figures, not equivalent whole-board measurements. ESP32-PICO figures are from Espressif’s datasheet; Raspberry Pi’s RP2040 sleep information is in its microcontroller-chip documentation. |
| Wi-Fi activity | No directly comparable figure established here. | 113 mA receive current; a listed transmit peak reaches 370 mA under the datasheet’s stated 802.11b test condition. | ESP32-PICO values are test-condition-specific, not a typical application average. Packet activity, signal conditions, transmit power, and duty cycle affect energy use. |
Board-level consumption can differ substantially from chip specifications. A regulator’s quiescent current, indicator LEDs, USB interface, radio use, peripherals, battery voltage, and firmware all affect the total. A Wi-Fi board that sleeps efficiently but reconnects and transmits often may use more energy over time than a design with longer active periods and infrequent wakeups.
Which board fits your project?
Choose Pico W when
- RP2040’s resources and Pico W’s documented wireless features meet your requirements.
- You can use its 26 multifunction 3.3 V GPIO, including three ADC-capable pins, and its programmable I/O.
- You value the Raspberry Pi board and software ecosystem and can meet your standby-current target with the complete board design.
Choose an ESP32 board when
- The exact ESP32 variant’s processing, peripheral, and wireless features suit the application.
- You have confirmed its Bluetooth mode, protocol and software support, and any regional or firmware requirements for your project.
- The specific board’s measured sleep and operating current fit the battery budget.
For either option, map the required sensors and peripherals to the actual board pins before committing. The Pico W’s GPIO and RP2040 programmable I/O are concrete capabilities, but the right comparison is against the I/O and capabilities of the ESP32 variant you plan to buy—not an unspecified family average.

How to estimate battery life fairly
Measure the candidate board with the intended firmware, supply, battery voltage, access point, signal level, traffic pattern, and peripherals. Capture current across the whole operating cycle rather than relying on a single deep-sleep number.

Include active processing, Wi-Fi transmission and reception, connected idle, sleep, wake-up, reconnection, and sensor or peripheral activity.
- Measure each state on the complete board. Include the regulator, LEDs, USB circuitry, and any other loads that will remain in the finished design.
- Use the intended wireless workload. Keep access-point conditions, signal strength, traffic, transmit settings, and connection behavior representative of deployment.
- Record how long each state lasts and how often it repeats. Frequent wakeups or reconnects can change average consumption even when sleep current is low.
- Estimate average current from the measured cycle. Weight each state’s current by the fraction of time spent in that state, then use the battery’s usable capacity and the resulting average current to estimate runtime.
- Verify the estimate in the intended setup. Battery behavior, voltage regulation, and operating conditions can make actual runtime differ from a simple capacity calculation.
No comparable whole-board runtime result establishes that either Pico W or an ESP32 board lasts longer. A valid comparison requires named boards tested with the same firmware, supply, access-point conditions, signal level, traffic pattern, and sleep schedule.

What if your standby-current target is especially low?
Inspect the board’s regulator and indicator LED losses first; these can remain relevant even when the microcontroller is asleep. If the chosen board cannot meet the target, consider switching power off to parts of the system or using a purpose-built low-power board. Raspberry Pi specifically recommends powering off the system or RP2040 when minimum current is required.
