ESP32-S3 E-Paper Displays Compared: Waveshare 1.54-Inch Boards and Module Alternatives

A practical comparison of Waveshare's integrated 1.54-inch ESP32-S3 e-paper boards and the separate SPI display module, including V1/V2 compatibility, color, refresh behavior, touch, battery variants, and custom-build requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the integrated monochrome ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 when you want the simplest 1.54-inch status display, choose the 1.54G when red and yellow are worth slower updates, and choose the separate 1.54-inch E module only when you already plan to design the controller and wiring. The product name hides decisions about touch, battery inclusion, board revision, color, and software compatibility.

Waveshare documents the specifications below, but the refresh figures are manufacturer claims rather than independent measurements. Seller stock and bundle contents can change, so verify the exact listing before ordering.

The three choices are not equivalent

There are two integrated ESP32-S3 boards in this comparison and one component-level display route. The standard ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 is a black-and-white board with optional touch and battery configurations. The ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54G is a separate integrated board with a four-color panel. The 1.54-inch E display module is only a screen module with a driver board; it does not replace an ESP32-S3 development board.

What the standard ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 provides

Monochrome output for readable, infrequently changing data

The standard board uses a black-and-white e-paper display. That is a good match for text, icons, schedules, sensor readings, QR codes, and other information that can remain on screen between updates. E-paper is reflective, so it uses ambient light rather than a continuously powered backlight. Waveshare also describes the last image as remaining visible after power is removed.

Those properties support low-power designs, but they do not guarantee a particular operating time. Wi-Fi connection time, update frequency, firmware behavior, battery capacity, regulator losses, and sleep configuration determine system runtime. There is no verified end-to-end battery-life test for these boards in the available material.

Touch and battery are SKU decisions

Waveshare lists touch and non-touch versions, as well as packages with and without a battery. The shared product name is therefore not enough to determine what arrives in the box. Before buying, read the exact listing title, photographs, specification table, and package-contents section.

  • Select touch if the device must accept local input without buttons or a phone interface.
  • Select a non-touch version when the display is read-only and you want to avoid paying for unused input hardware.
  • Choose a battery-included package only if its capacity, connector, charging arrangement, and physical fit suit your enclosure; the product name alone does not establish those details.
  • For a custom battery system, the version without a supplied battery may leave more freedom, but it does not remove the need to design charging and protection safely.

V1 and V2: check the board before using code

The standard board has a hardware transition that affects software compatibility. Waveshare says V2 is being phased in from November 1, 2025. Existing inventory can therefore contain either revision, depending on the seller and shipment date.

Revision Processor/module identification Flash PSRAM Documented note
V1 ESP32-S3FH4R2 4 MB 2 MB Use V1-specific examples
V2 ESP32-S3-PICO-1-N8R8 8 MB 8 MB Whole-board sleep consumption is optimized; use V2-specific examples

Waveshare’s documentation states: “Example programs are not interchangeable between different versions.” Treat that as a practical compatibility rule, not a suggestion. Inspect the marking on the physical board or the seller’s photographs, then obtain the example package for that exact revision. Do not assume that a sketch that compiles for V1 will initialize V2’s display and peripherals correctly.

Symptoms of a revision mismatch

  • The project compiles but the display remains blank or shows a corrupted waveform.
  • Flash or PSRAM assumptions in the example do not match the board.
  • Sleep behavior differs from the example’s expected current draw.
  • Touch, buttons, or other peripherals fail because the pin definitions differ.

If any of these occur, stop changing display timing at random. Recheck the revision, replace the example with the matching package, and rebuild from that known-good baseline.

When the ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54G makes sense

The 1.54G is the integrated option for projects that genuinely benefit from red and yellow as well as black and white. Color can separate alerts from normal readings, distinguish categories on a label, or make a small status screen easier to scan without adding a separate indicator lamp.

Its panel is documented as red/yellow/black/white, with 8 MB of Flash and 8 MB of PSRAM on the board. Waveshare publishes one full-refresh figure and one fast-refresh figure for this model: 20 seconds and 15 seconds respectively. Those are specifications from the manufacturer, not timings measured by an independent test, and “fast” should not be interpreted as animation-grade responsiveness.

Use color selectively

A four-color e-paper display is best when an update can tolerate a long redraw. Design screens so the previous image remains useful while a new one is being written. Avoid interfaces that require rapid scrolling, live gauges, fast games, or frequent pointer movement. If the device must react immediately to a button press, let the ESP32-S3 provide immediate audio, LED, or network feedback while the display updates at its own pace.

The separate 1.54-inch E module is a custom-build component

The E module follows a different purchasing and engineering model. Waveshare documents a 240 × 240 E6 full-color panel, SPI connection, and versions supplied as a module with a driver board or as a raw panel. You still need a controller, power regulation, firmware, mechanical mounting, and a suitable enclosure.

What you must provide

  • An MCU or single-board computer with an SPI peripheral and enough GPIO for chip-select, reset, busy, and other signals required by the driver board.
  • Correct logic voltage and a power supply that can handle the panel’s update demand.
  • Firmware that implements the panel’s initialization sequence, waveform handling, partial/full refresh choices, and sleep behavior.
  • A mechanically safe flex-cable connection if you use the raw-panel form.
  • A plan for temperature and image-update timing. Waveshare warns that color can shift at low temperature.

The module’s documented 27-second full-refresh figure is useful when sizing the user experience, but it does not tell you the total update time of your finished system. Controller startup, SPI transfer speed, waveform selection, and application processing add their own delays.

Why choose the module route

Choose it when the display component is the goal: perhaps you already have a preferred MCU, need a nonstandard enclosure, are designing a production carrier board, or want to place the controller away from the panel. Choose an integrated board instead when you want working ESP32-S3 hardware, documented examples, and fewer wiring decisions.

Refresh behavior and power: what e-paper can and cannot do

E-paper’s main advantage is a persistent image. Once a frame is written, the panel can continue showing it without continuously driving a luminous display. That is valuable for signs, room labels, inventory tags, and sensor nodes that wake, update, and sleep.

Persistence is not the same as zero energy use. The ESP32-S3, Wi-Fi radio, regulator, touch controller, battery charger, and wake-up circuitry can consume power even while the panel is unchanged. A realistic runtime estimate requires your update interval, network duty cycle, sleep current, battery capacity, and firmware. Do not convert the display’s image retention into a battery-life promise.

Plan around full refreshes

  • Update only when data changes materially.
  • Batch several values into one redraw instead of refreshing after every sensor reading.
  • Use a stable layout so readers can understand the old frame while a new frame is being written.
  • Keep a recovery path for a power interruption: redraw a complete frame after startup rather than assuming the panel still contains valid state.

Software support and a safe development workflow

Waveshare documents Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF development paths for the integrated 1.54 board. The 1.54G repository is described as including sample programs, factory firmware, hardware design files, and Arduino and ESP-IDF examples. That is a useful starting point, but the model and revision still control which files apply.

  1. Identify the hardware. Record the exact product name, whether it is touch or non-touch, whether a battery package was supplied, and the board revision printed on the PCB.
  2. Choose the framework. Use Arduino when you want a familiar sketch workflow and a quick prototype. Use ESP-IDF when your application needs Espressif’s native configuration, component structure, and production-oriented control.
  3. Start with the matching vendor example. Select the example for the exact display model and revision. Do not substitute a standard-board example for a 1.54G or a module example for an integrated board.
  4. Confirm the display alone. Build and flash the unmodified example before adding Wi-Fi, sensors, touch handling, or deep sleep. A known-good baseline makes later failures easier to isolate.
  5. Add one subsystem at a time. Test touch, networking, battery measurement, and sleep separately. Keep a full-refresh test available so you can distinguish application bugs from panel-state issues.
  6. Record your final configuration. Note the board revision, framework version, display driver, wiring, refresh mode, and sleep settings in the project README so a replacement board does not silently introduce an incompatible example.

Choosing by project type

Pick the standard integrated board for a monochrome information panel

It is the most straightforward choice when the display only needs black and white and you want the ESP32-S3 and panel on one board. Select touch only when local interaction matters, and verify whether the selected listing includes a battery.

Pick the 1.54G for occasional color-coded updates

Use it for alerts, classifications, or labels where red and yellow carry meaning and the interface can wait through long redraws. It is a poor fit for rapidly changing visuals, regardless of the ESP32-S3’s processing capability.

Pick the E module for a purpose-built controller design

Use the module when controller placement, panel size, SPI wiring, or enclosure geometry matter more than turnkey setup. Budget engineering time for the driver, flex cable, power system, temperature behavior, and refresh scheduling.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm whether the screen is monochrome or four-color.
  • Confirm touch versus non-touch.
  • Confirm whether a battery is included, and inspect the package contents rather than relying on a generic product name.
  • For the standard board, identify V1 or V2 before downloading code.
  • For the 1.54G, accept the vendor-published refresh behavior as a design constraint.
  • For the E module, plan the ESP32-S3 or other controller, SPI wiring, power, mounting, and firmware yourself.
  • Check current stock, shipping region, seller photographs, and firmware files at the time of purchase; those details are volatile.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying the wrong package

Symptom: the board arrives without touch or a battery you expected. Fix: compare the exact SKU and package-contents list before ordering; variants share a similar product name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flashing an example for the wrong revision

Symptom: compile errors, a blank panel, or nonworking peripherals. Fix: identify V1 or V2 on the PCB and use only the corresponding example set.

Expecting e-paper to behave like an LCD

Symptom: an interface feels unusable because every interaction waits for a redraw. Fix: redesign around infrequent updates and provide immediate non-display feedback when necessary.

Treating the module as a complete development board

Symptom: you have a panel but no MCU, pin plan, or working firmware. Fix: choose an integrated board for a turnkey ESP32-S3 project, or document the module’s controller, SPI signals, voltage, mounting, and driver work before purchasing.

Assuming a published refresh time is a battery estimate

Symptom: the finished device runs for less time than expected. Fix: measure the complete system with your Wi-Fi, update interval, sleep mode, and battery; panel refresh specifications alone cannot predict runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most first ESP32-S3 e-paper builds, the standard ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 is the sensible starting point: it combines the controller and monochrome display and is documented for Arduino and ESP-IDF. Verify touch, battery, and revision before writing code. Move to the 1.54G only when four-color output justifies its slower refresh behavior. Choose the 1.54-inch E module when you deliberately want a component for a custom controller design, not when you are looking for an equivalent ready-to-run board.
