Use ESPHome for configuration-led devices in its ecosystem, and consider Zephyr when your project calls for a modular real-time operating system (RTOS). Before committing, verify support for your exact ESP32 chip and required peripherals: these four options do different jobs, and there is no universal winner.
How the four options differ
ESP-IDF and Arduino-ESP32 are frameworks for writing applications in different development models. ESPHome is a configuration-driven firmware platform, while Zephyr is an RTOS. Treating them as four interchangeable ways to write the same kind of firmware can lead to a poor fit: start with your project model, then check target support and workflow.

| Option | What it is | Best fit | Key checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESP-IDF | Espressif’s official IoT development framework, with access to chip features, system components, and production tools. | Custom firmware using Espressif’s native APIs and toolchain. | Confirm the target chip and dependency versions. Setup includes a target toolchain, CMake, Ninja, and ESP-IDF. Official documentation covers both IDE and command-line workflows. |
| Arduino-ESP32 | The Arduino core for ESP32-family chips, using the Arduino programming model and ecosystem. | Applications that benefit from familiar Arduino-style code or compatible libraries and examples. | Check support for the exact SoC and every library you plan to use. C2 and C61 have additional setup requirements. |
| ESPHome | A configuration-driven firmware platform with an ESP32 component that offers framework selection. | Supported devices built through configuration in the ESPHome ecosystem. | Framework choices vary by chip. Current documentation defaults to ESP-IDF and recommends it when possible. |
| Zephyr | An open-source RTOS with a modular architecture. | Embedded projects whose requirements call for an RTOS and modular system architecture. | Support and peripheral completeness vary by device; check the specific chip, peripherals, and known limitations. |
Which framework fits your project?
Choose ESP-IDF for native Espressif development
ESP-IDF is the natural starting point when you want direct access to Espressif’s system components and chip features for a custom application. Espressif’s stable getting-started guide identifies itself as ESP-IDF v6.1. That documentation describes a defined setup with the toolchain and build tools, rather than a framework choice based on a claim of universal simplicity or speed.
Choose Arduino-ESP32 when its ecosystem is the right fit
The Arduino programming model can suit application development when the libraries and examples you need support your target. The Arduino-ESP32 getting-started documentation lists stable support for ESP32, C3, C5, C6, H2, P4, S2, and S3. It describes extra conditions for C2 and C61: use Arduino as an ESP-IDF component or rebuild static libraries. Check the current support table and each dependency before choosing a board.

- 2.4GHz Dual Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Development Board
- Support LWIP protocol, Freertos
- SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
- Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
- ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
Choose ESPHome for configuration-led devices
ESPHome is a better match when you want to create supported device firmware through its configuration-led approach, rather than build a general-purpose embedded application in the same way as ESP-IDF or Arduino. Its ESP32 component documentation currently sets ESP-IDF as the default and recommends it when possible. In that documentation, C2, C5, C6, C61, H2, and P4 require ESP-IDF; Arduino remains an option for classic ESP32, C3, S2, and S3. These are documentation and release-specific details, so check the version you plan to use.
Choose Zephyr when an RTOS architecture is a requirement
Zephyr makes sense when your project benefits from an RTOS and modular architecture. Espressif’s Zephyr support status identifies Zephyr 4.0 for ESP32-C3 as its first production-ready release for Espressif products. That does not establish equal support across ESP32 devices or peripherals: the status page flags limitations, including SMP functionality and Bluetooth. Verify the exact device and features against current upstream guidance.

- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
Check compatibility before you build
A framework’s general support label is not enough to establish that your particular board and application will work. Check the exact chip variant, required peripherals, framework version, and dependencies together.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the SoC on the board. “ESP32” refers to a family; support differs among its members.
- Match the framework’s documented chip support. Pay particular attention to the Arduino C2 and C61 conditions and the ESPHome framework restrictions described above.
- Check peripheral and feature coverage. This is especially important for Zephyr, where support varies by device and known limitations are documented.
- Confirm library and component compatibility. A supported chip does not guarantee that every Arduino library, ESPHome component, or other dependency supports it.
- Pin a compatible version set. Match framework and dependency versions to the project rather than assuming the newest release will fit existing code.
What setup involves
For an ESP-IDF build, Espressif’s getting-started guide describes installing the toolchain and build tools through Espressif Installation Manager, with GUI and command-line installation options. It also covers IDE and command-line project workflows. Arduino-ESP32’s documentation recommends installing through Boards Manager and directs readers to its supported-board information.
