The project documents a custom touchscreen main board paired with a radio and infrared shield, plus firmware that must match the board revision you have.
What ESP32-DIV is—and how it relates to Flipper Zero
ESP32-DIV is a separate handheld project built around an ESP32-S3. Calling it a DIY Flipper Zero alternative describes its broad role as a portable, multi-function toolkit; it does not mean the hardware, firmware, or accessories are interchangeable. The project documentation describes ESP32-DIV as a standalone device, not as a Flipper Zero expansion. Project overview

There is a different route for using wireless tools with a Flipper Zero: the ESP32 Marauder guide describes a compatible ESP32 expansion board connected to the Flipper over UART. Marauder runs on that ESP32 board, while a companion app on the Flipper provides an interface. That setup is distinct from building an ESP32-DIV. ESP32 Marauder’s Flipper guide

What the documented hardware includes
The ESP32-DIV project describes two core pieces: a custom main board and a shield. Its overview lists the following components; this is the maintainer’s hardware description, not an independently verified bill of materials.
| Part | Documented hardware |
|---|---|
| Main board | ESP32-S3; 2.8-inch ILI9341 TFT touchscreen; power regulation and battery charging/protection; CP2102 USB-to-serial interface; PCF8574 I/O expander; SD card slot; buttons; antenna connector; NeoPixels; and an optional buzzer. |
| Shield | Three NRF24 modules, one CC1101 module, multiple antennas, and an infrared transceiver. |
The project landing page says open schematics and PCB files are included, making the design inspectable and potentially reproducible by someone with suitable electronics and fabrication access. The documentation reviewed does not establish a complete verified parts list, exact component variants for every item, or current retail availability of a ready-made main-board-and-shield kit. What the project says it can do
The project advertises tools covering Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), 2.4 GHz, sub-GHz, infrared, RFID/NFC, GPS, and system functions. Its feature list includes wireless scanning and monitoring, SD logging, infrared capture and replay, sub-GHz signal profiles, RFID/NFC operations, GPS logging, file management, and firmware updates. These are project-described features, not independent findings about performance, range, compatibility, or whether a particular operation will work in a given environment. Some listed functions can disrupt or target devices and networks. The project warns: “This project is intended for educational and research purposes only. Use only on networks and devices you own or have explicit permission to test. Unauthorized use may violate local laws.” Follow that guidance and check the rules that apply where you are; the warning is not a jurisdiction-specific legal assessment. ESP32-DIV project warning

Plan the build and storage
Treat the custom main board and shield as the core of the build. Before sourcing parts, use the project’s schematics and PCB files to identify the exact revision and component variants required; the summarized hardware list alone is not a complete purchasing checklist. The reviewed documentation does not confirm a retail kit listing, so do not assume that a preassembled set is available.
A microSD card is a practical accessory to consider because the board has an SD slot and the project documents logging and file-related functions. The reviewed project pages do not specify a required card capacity or speed, so no particular specification can be presented as mandatory. Hardware documentation · Feature list

Choose firmware and flash the correct board
The project’s site displayed version v1.7.2 when accessed. It lists browser, desktop, command-line, Arduino IDE, OTA, and SD update methods, and its browser-based Web Serial instructions specify Chrome or Edge on desktop. Release assets and interface details can change, so check the project’s current instructions before flashing. ESP32-DIV flashing instructions
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the physical board and revision. Confirm whether you have an ESP32-DIV v2, v1, or a CYD board before choosing firmware. The flashing page lists these as separate targets.
- Open the current flashing instructions. Select a documented method—browser, desktop, command line, Arduino IDE, OTA, or SD update—and follow its current prerequisites.
- Select the matching firmware target. Do not choose a target based only on the device’s appearance or the fact that it uses an ESP32. The firmware target needs to match the actual board.
- Flash and check the result. Use the project’s procedure for the chosen method, then confirm the device starts and the interface responds. If it does not, stop and recheck the board revision and target rather than trying unrelated firmware images.
For comparison, Marauder’s release files distinguish a Flipper Wi-Fi Developer Board target, marked _flipper.bin, from other board targets. That suffix belongs to the Marauder release naming convention; it is not an ESP32-DIV firmware target. Marauder firmware targets

Which route fits your goal?
| Route | Platform and hardware | Interface and setup distinction |
|---|---|---|
| ESP32-DIV | Standalone ESP32-S3 main board with a touchscreen, paired with a shield listing NRF24, CC1101, and infrared hardware. | Uses ESP32-DIV firmware for the actual board revision; the project documents several update methods, including browser Web Serial on desktop Chrome or Edge. |
| Flipper Zero with ESP32 Marauder | Flipper Zero communicates over UART with a compatible ESP32 expansion board; Marauder runs on the ESP32. | A Flipper companion app provides the interface. Marauder has separate firmware targets, including a Flipper Wi-Fi Developer Board target. |
| Flipper Zero Wi-Fi Developer Board | Official ESP32-S2-based accessory for debugging and firmware updates. | It is a Flipper developer accessory, not the ESP32-DIV main board and shield. |
These are different hardware paths, not performance tiers. The cited project documentation does not provide independent comparative testing that would support ranking their range, effectiveness, or feature compatibility.
