FeatureNAB’s open-source mmWave presence sensor pairs a Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6 with one of two radar boards and ESPHome to send presence and location data to Home Assistant. For the project’s 2D tracking use, choose the LD2450; the DFRobot SEN0609 is the alternative presence-detection board. The project repository provides PCB and enclosure files, but does not publish measured accuracy or detection-range results, so “precision” should not be read as a validated performance claim.
What the project does
The sensor is designed to track a person’s location in two dimensions so Home Assistant can trigger automations based on occupied areas of a room. The project gives examples such as switching on a reading light when someone sits in an armchair or a kitchen light when someone approaches a counter. Firmware uses ESPHome; the project’s hardware and integration details are in the FeatureNAB GitHub repository.

Those examples describe intended uses, not independently verified detection performance. The repository does not report controlled tests, numerical accuracy, or a validated maximum detection distance.
Choose one radar board
Both configurations use the same Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6 controller. Select one radar module for the build; the project does not call for connecting both at once.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Radar option | Documented role | Connection detail |
|---|---|---|
| LD2450 | Tracking-oriented option for the project’s 2D location use | 2 mm-pitch dual-row-header connection; the project warns this is not the common 2.54 mm pitch |
| DFRobot SEN0609 | Alternative human-presence radar board | Its own five-pin header |
The repository does not provide comparable measured range or accuracy results for these choices. It therefore does not support ranking them by detection distance or precision. The LD2450 is the documented choice when the goal is 2D tracking; SEN0609 is presented as the alternative presence board.
Parts and optional additions
Required for either version
- Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6 development board.
- One supported radar board: LD2450 or DFRobot SEN0609.
- The project PCB and the wiring/header arrangement appropriate to the selected radar.
Optional hardware
- An Adafruit SHTC3 temperature-and-humidity sensor, with a header to expose the I²C connector.
- Optional capacitors listed by the project for power stability.
For the LD2450 version, check the connector pitch before ordering or assembling headers: the project specifies 2 mm, not the more familiar 2.54 mm spacing.

Build the PCB and enclosure
- Open the project repository and download
LD2450_HAT.zipfrom its Releases. The repository’s described PCB workflow is for the LD2450 HAT; confirm the files and connector arrangement match your selected board before fabrication. - Upload the Gerber files from the ZIP to a PCB manufacturer. The repository names JLCPCB as an example, not as a requirement.
- Assemble the Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6, the single selected radar module, and any optional components using the project’s board files and connection details.
- For the enclosure, use the repository’s
FullAssembly.3mffile. Print the tightening ring at 0.12 mm layer height; the repository says the remaining enclosure parts can use 0.2 mm layers.
Configure ESPHome and Home Assistant
The project is intended to run ESPHome firmware and connect to Home Assistant. Its published description identifies 2D location data as the basis for zone-based automations. Follow the repository’s current firmware and setup instructions for the selected hardware; the project description alone does not establish exact entity names, configuration values, or a universal setup sequence.
Once the device is reporting the data exposed by its firmware, use Home Assistant automations to associate a room area with an action—for example, a reading-corner light with occupancy in that corner. Treat such rules as dependent on your room layout and installation, rather than assuming that the example will behave identically in every space.

What is known about cost and performance
FeatureNAB’s undated README estimates about $10–12 for its basic configuration before shipping and duties, and notes that prices can fluctuate. Circuit Digest reported around $10 per unit in coverage dated October 6, 2026. Both are source-reported estimates, not verified current checkout prices or guaranteed totals.
The project README does not publish numerical accuracy, controlled detection tests, or a validated range. The headline’s “precision” wording is not evidence of a measured result. Actual results should not be assumed from the project description alone.

Keep related ESP32 radar projects distinct
Other ESP32-C6 mmWave designs use different sensors and integration paths. For example, a separate Zigbee design uses LD2410-family modules and exposes moving/static presence states; its repository says the original maintainer no longer maintained it as of January 2026. That is not the same ESPHome-based 2D-tracking project described here. Likewise, a separate LD2450 project reports multi-zone tracking for up to three simultaneous targets, but that does not establish that FeatureNAB’s implementation supports three targets.
