Neither option is always better. A travel eSIM can be cheaper when your home carrier charges extra, while your carrier’s roaming plan may be simpler—or better value—if it already covers your destination. Compare the full trip cost, coverage, data limits, calls and texts, hotspot rules, and whether your phone can use another provider’s eSIM before choosing.
What “eSIM vs. roaming” really means
An eSIM is a digital SIM format; roaming is a service arrangement that lets your home carrier connect you to mobile networks abroad. You can roam using an eSIM just as you can with a physical SIM. In most travel comparisons, the real choice is between your home carrier’s roaming service or pass and a separate travel eSIM, often a prepaid data plan. Compare the options for your trip
Check the offers for every country on your itinerary, including stopovers. A plan that works in your main destination may not cover a transit country, and a regional plan’s coverage depends on its stated list of included locations.

Ofcom cautions that roaming terms can include limits on data speed or use. Its report also notes that an eSIM’s price advantage depends on destination, trip length, usage, and provider—not just the headline price. See Ofcom’s pricing and consumer engagement report.

What the available price comparison shows—and does not show
Ofcom’s 2026 report compared selected UK roaming options with travel eSIMs using provider prices collected in August and September 2025. For a ten-day trip using 10 GB in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, or Greece, the report found an average travel eSIM cost of £19.06, compared with £19.50 for the cheapest included roaming options in its UK operator sample. For its ten-day, 10 GB US scenario, the average travel eSIM cost was £21.99, compared with £49.28 for roaming options from the included UK operators.
These are historical averages for specified scenarios, not current quotes or a prediction for an individual traveler. The EU comparison used EE, Vodafone, and Three as the roaming sample; O2 offered free EU roaming. The results do not establish that an eSIM will be cheaper for another home country, carrier, destination, or plan. If your existing plan already includes roaming, Ofcom says switching may not save money.

When your carrier’s roaming is likely to suit you
- Your plan includes the countries you will visit, or its pass costs less than a suitable travel eSIM for the full trip.
- You want to keep using your usual number for calls, texts, or services that rely on it, and your carrier’s terms cover that use.
- You prefer to avoid installing and configuring a second line and are comfortable with the carrier’s roaming limits.
Before departure, check your carrier’s current destination list, rates, pass activation rules, and data limits. Apple’s guidance for iPhone and iPad also recommends checking with your carrier before travel and describes where to manage data roaming; menu labels and steps can differ on other devices. - Your home carrier charges extra for roaming and a travel eSIM offers the data, coverage, and validity you need for less.
- Your phone supports eSIM, is eligible for another provider’s service, and you can complete the provider’s setup requirements.
- You are happy to use a data-only connection for apps and online calls, or the eSIM explicitly includes the voice and text services you need.
Apple describes using a travel eSIM on its own or alongside a home line. If both lines remain on, the home line may still incur roaming charges, so check your carrier’s terms and set the data line deliberately. A travel eSIM does not automatically replace your normal number or provide ordinary voice and SMS service. Apple’s travel eSIM guidance also notes that local carriers may offer prepaid or postpaid plans, often with a local number, while worldwide providers advertise prepaid data plans in more than 190 countries or regions. Availability and device rules vary.

Check your phone and set up the chosen option
Before you buy a travel eSIM
- Confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM where you bought it. Provider and country restrictions can apply.
- If buying from a provider other than your home carrier, check that the phone is unlocked. Apple says an iPhone must not be carrier-locked to use another carrier.
- Read the offer’s country list, network, data allowance, validity, speed and fair-use terms, hotspot rules, and voice/SMS details.
- Follow the provider’s instructions to install and activate the plan. Do not assume installation and activation happen at the same time; check when the plan’s validity begins.
- When both lines are enabled, choose which line supplies mobile data and check whether the home line can incur charges for calls, texts, or roaming.
Before using your home carrier abroad
- Ask the carrier whether your destinations are included, what the plan covers, and whether you need to buy or activate a pass.
- Check the allowance, charges after it is used, any slower-speed conditions, and whether calls, texts, voicemail, and hotspot use are included.
- Confirm the device’s roaming settings and follow the carrier’s instructions. On iPhone and iPad, Apple documents the data-roaming control in its roaming settings guide.
A quick decision rule
- Choose roaming if your current plan covers the full itinerary at a price and allowance that work for you, and keeping your usual number matters.
- Choose a travel eSIM if your carrier’s extra charges make it poor value, your phone is compatible and eligible, and the eSIM’s coverage and terms match your needs.
- Compare both carefully if you need a local number, substantial calls or texts, hotspot access, or coverage across several countries. A low data-only price may not meet those requirements.
The answer depends on your home carrier and country, destinations, trip length, expected data use, and need for ordinary calls or texts. Compare current offers against those details rather than treating either option as universally cheaper or easier.
