Neither eSIM nor physical SIM is categorically safer or easier to replace. eSIM offers security equivalent to a removable SIM for authenticating a device to a mobile network, but neither format prevents fraud if someone tricks the carrier into moving your number. Replacement is easiest when your new phone and carrier support the transfer route you need—and when you can meet the carrier’s identity checks.
Is an eSIM safer than a physical SIM?
Not inherently. The GSMA says an eSIM provides a level of security and protection equivalent to a removable SIM for network authentication. The formats differ in how someone can access or move the service, but that is not the same as one being universally safer. GSMA’s eSIM overview describes the eSIM profile as residing in a secure element.

Physical theft and carrier fraud are different risks
A physical SIM can be removed and inserted into another compatible phone. That creates a risk if someone gets the card and can use it; a SIM PIN can require a PIN after the card is removed or the phone restarts. It does not protect against a carrier transferring your number to another SIM.
In a SIM-swap attack, someone impersonates you to persuade the carrier to reassign your number. The FCC’s 2023 order describes attackers having an eSIM reassigned to a device they control, giving them access to calls and texts intended for the victim. ENISA’s December 2021 report also describes fraudulent swaps through in-store and remote channels. The attack targets the carrier’s process, so choosing eSIM does not eliminate it. FCC 23-95; ENISA, Countering SIM-Swapping.

Practical steps to reduce exposure
- If you use a physical SIM, set a SIM PIN if your phone supports it. Apple explains how SIM PIN works in its iPhone cellular-service guide.
- Secure your carrier account with a unique password and use any account PIN or port-protection option your carrier offers.
- If your phone suddenly loses service unexpectedly, contact your carrier promptly through a channel you trust.
- Where available, use app-based authentication or passkeys rather than SMS for important account sign-ins and recovery. A SIM PIN does not stop a fraudulent carrier reassignment.
Which SIM is easier to replace?
It depends on the replacement phone, your carrier’s options, and whether you can access the old phone or account. A physical SIM can be quick to move if you still have the card and the new phone has a compatible tray. An eSIM avoids handling a card, but the new phone must support eSIM and the carrier must support transferring or reissuing the profile.
| Situation | Physical SIM | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| You have the old SIM and a compatible replacement phone | Move the card if the new phone has a tray and accepts that SIM size. | Transfer or activate the profile through a supported carrier process. |
| The old SIM or phone is lost or damaged | You will need the carrier to issue a replacement SIM. | You will need the carrier to transfer or reissue the eSIM; a transfer from the old phone may not be possible. |
| The replacement phone does not support the format | Not usable without a compatible SIM tray. | Not usable without eSIM support. |
The carrier’s recovery process matters in either case. It may involve remote account access, a QR code, an app, customer service, a replacement card, or an in-person identity check. In its 2021 survey of 48 operators in 22 European countries, ENISA found that 98% of surveyed operators had an in-store SIM-swap process and 79% had a remote one. These figures describe those respondents, not all carriers worldwide or the process a particular customer will face. ENISA also reported that 48% of surveyed operators said they had no SIM-swapping incidents in the 12 months before the survey; this is a self-reported result, not an estimate of an individual subscriber’s risk. What the transfer process looks like on iPhone and Pixel
iPhone
Apple lists several eSIM activation routes: carrier activation, Quick Transfer, a carrier QR code, a carrier app, and in some countries or regions, in-store activation. Quick Transfer is available only with participating carriers. Once the number transfers, the old iPhone stops using it. Setup usually requires connectivity, with exceptions for some eSIM-only models and regions. Physical-SIM support also varies by iPhone model and market. Check Apple’s cellular-service instructions for your model and region.

Google says a physical SIM or eSIM may transfer to eSIM during setup, depending on the carrier. Automatic transfer requires both phones to run Android 12 or later, have current Google Play Services, and use a screen lock. If the transfer is not detected or problems persist, Google directs users to contact the carrier. See Google’s Pixel SIM-transfer instructions.

What to check before replacing your phone
- Confirm that the exact replacement model supports the SIM format you plan to use, and check whether it has a physical SIM tray in your country or region.
- Check whether the phone is carrier-unlocked and whether your carrier supports eSIM activation or transfer on that model.
- Find out whether the carrier requires the old phone, an account login, a QR code, an app, or an in-person identity check.
- If your old phone is unavailable, ask the carrier how it verifies your identity and restores service before relying on a device-to-device transfer.
For a physical card, Apple documents ejecting the SIM tray with a SIM eject tool or a paper clip. The tool only helps access the tray; it does not replace a SIM or restore eSIM service. Apple’s instructions cover removal and insertion.
