ESA’s “Navigation documentary filming at ESTEC” image shows the Erasmus High Bay in Noordwijk, Netherlands, set up for filming Finding Our Way: Inside the Galileo Project. The documentary traces Galileo’s history and the challenges of building an independent European satellite-navigation system. ESA scheduled its YouTube premiere for 15 October 2026 at 18:30 CEST; that date is in the future as of 9 October 2026.

What the ESTEC image shows

The European Space Agency’s image entry, published 5 October 2026, identifies the setting as the Erasmus High Bay at ESTEC, ESA’s technical centre in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The space was prepared for documentary filming. The image description does not identify the filming date, crew members or equipment, so those details cannot be established from the image record.

What the documentary covers

Director Johannes Walden described a three-part account that moves from Galileo’s roots to the system’s future:

#1 Best Overall
  1. Origins: The historical and political context in which satellite navigation—and eventually Galileo—emerged.
  2. Building Galileo: The technical, political and organisational challenges involved in creating an independent European navigation system.
  3. Today and what comes next: Galileo’s current position and the future direction of satellite navigation.

In an ESA interview published 8 October 2026, Walden said the production interviewed nearly 20 people, all high-level individuals with busy schedules. Coordinating those interviews meant changing the production approach: “I changed my mindset from a rigid storyboard and shooting plan to a more flexible and creative approach.”

Using archival photographs

Walden said the team had substantial recent ESA archive footage but fewer images from earlier periods, along with hundreds of photographs. He described using AI during production to enhance some images and turn others into short videos for the screen: “During production, the AI revolution was gaining momentum, which helped us enhance some of the photos we had or turn them into short videos to make them work for the screen.” This is Walden’s account of the production process, not an independent assessment of the resulting imagery.

Why ESTEC is part of Europe’s navigation story

ESTEC is more than the setting identified in the filming image: ESA also locates its Navigation Laboratory there. The laboratory uses a drone carrying satellite-navigation receivers to collect data for later analysis. That is broader context about navigation work at the site; ESA’s information does not establish that the drone appears in the image or documentary. See ESA’s Navigation Laboratory overview.

In 2025, ESA marked three decades of satellite navigation in Europe. On 2 September 2025, it opened ESTEC for a celebration with partners from across the continent, highlighting Galileo and EGNOS. The milestone helps place a film about Galileo’s history in the wider European navigation effort. ESA’s account of the 2025 celebration describes the event and its focus.
