The European Space Agency (ESA) and Mistral have signed a Letter of Intent to explore cooperation on artificial intelligence for space. The framework names possible work in Earth observation and engineering, advanced AI capabilities for space, and skills development; it does not announce a completed deployment or a schedule for one.
What did ESA and Mistral agree to do?
The organizations signed the Letter of Intent in Paris on 16 September 2026. ESA announced it on 23 September. The agreement establishes a framework for exploring how Mistral’s models, cloud infrastructure and technical capabilities might support ESA activities. It does not publish a binding project list, budget or delivery timetable. ESA’s announcement describes opportunities the parties intend to examine.
Where might AI be used?
Earth observation and engineering
The parties will explore AI applications in Earth observation and engineering. ESA identifies improving engineering activities, making knowledge easier to access and automating repetitive work as practical aims.
Advanced AI capabilities for space
They will also examine advanced AI capabilities for space, including support for technical decisions that remain human-led. The announcement does not identify specific missions or operational systems that will use Mistral technology.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Skills and knowledge development
A third area is building skills and developing knowledge. The announcement does not specify a training program, participant count or schedule.
Does the agreement mean ESA is already using Mistral AI in missions?
No new operational deployment is specified. The Letter of Intent is an exploratory framework: ESA and Mistral say they will investigate potential applications, rather than report that Mistral AI has been put into service on a mission.

What would European infrastructure and safeguards involve?
The parties say they will examine options for deploying relevant capabilities on European infrastructure. They also name security, resilience, traceability, auditability and protection of sensitive information as considerations. These are issues for the exploration, not guarantees that a particular deployment or safeguard is already in place.

EVE (Earth Virtual Expert)
ESA describes EVE as a specialized capability developed through its Φ-lab with European partners to support Earth observation and Earth science. The announcement reports no performance results for either initiative, so it does not establish how they compare with one another or with the proposed cooperation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not yet known?
The ESA announcement gives no quantified performance results, spending, implementation timetable or measurable outcomes for the new framework. It also does not identify a completed project or promise a particular AI service. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and Mistral co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch described the partnership’s goals positively, but those statements are the parties’ views, not independent validation of results.
