Error While Trying to Get a Backup: Find the Cause Before Changing Partitions

The message “Error while trying to get backup” is too vague to diagnose alone. Check for Microsoft’s specific WinRE servicing indicators, then inspect the backup app’s logs and backup set.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Error while trying to get backup” does not identify a particular backup app or a single cause. First find out whether the failure is in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) servicing or in the backup program itself; then follow the branch supported by the logs. Do not resize or delete a partition based on this message alone.

Start by identifying the failure

Before changing settings, record the backup application, Windows version, complete error text, and whether the problem occurs while creating a backup or restoring one. The phrase alone is too general to distinguish a Windows recovery update problem from an issue with a backup product.

  • Note the application name and version, if available.
  • Copy the full message or save a screenshot, including any error code.
  • Record whether the failure happens during backup or restore and what operation was underway.
  • Check whether the source disk, partition, drive letter, or backup destination has changed since the last successful run.

Check for evidence of a WinRE servicing failure

A Windows Recovery Environment servicing problem is one possible lead, not a diagnosis based on the backup message. Microsoft’s guidance describes a specific indicator: Event ID 4502 with the message “Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed” and an ErrorPhase value of 2. Microsoft says this case is likely caused by insufficient space on the recovery partition. See Microsoft’s KB5028997 instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Event Viewer and inspect the System log for Event ID 4502. Check that the event details include the quoted servicing message and ErrorPhase 2; an unrelated error or a different phase does not establish this specific case.
  2. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run reagentc /info. Review the reported Windows RE status and location to see whether WinRE is enabled and where it is configured.
  3. Compare what you find with the exact Windows update guidance for your version before taking action. A WinRE event does not, by itself, prove that Windows caused a separate backup application’s failure.

Apply the recovery-partition space guidance only to the covered update

Microsoft’s KB5120221 guidance for the Windows Recovery Environment update for Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2, published July 16, 2026, specifies 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition. That is a requirement for the update covered by that article—not a universal capacity rule for every Windows release, device, or backup application. Read Microsoft’s KB5120221 article to confirm whether it applies to your system.

#1 Best Overall
SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

Do not resize the recovery partition without checking the layout

Microsoft’s manual procedure in KB5028997 is conditional on the machine’s partition arrangement; it requires the recovery partition to follow the operating-system partition. The steps involve disabling WinRE and changing partitions, so a different layout may not fit the documented procedure.

  • Confirm the actual disk and partition order before following any resizing steps.
  • Use the Microsoft instructions that apply to the device’s layout; do not delete or resize a partition simply because a backup failed.
  • If the documented assumptions do not match your disk, stop rather than improvising partition commands.

If the WinRE indicators do not match, investigate the backup set

When the Event Viewer evidence and WinRE status do not point to the described servicing case, turn to the backup application’s own logs and the files it expects to use. The September 13–14, 2026 Windows 11 Forum discussion of this error phrase mentions missing or changed backup files or partitions, drive-letter or disk changes, and inconsistent backup sets; those are possibilities to check, not a confirmed cause for every user or product. The thread is anecdotal and does not establish a universal fix.

  • Use the application’s own documentation for product-specific recovery steps, since the error wording does not name the software.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The useful distinction is whether there is a matching WinRE servicing event, a backup-app log pointing to a missing or inaccessible backup component, or a change in disk or partition assignments. Without the application name and full error context, the cause of an individual failure remains unresolved. Do not attribute a backup failure to a Windows update unless the system’s logs support that connection.
