Erlang and Elixir are distinct languages that share the BEAM runtime and the OTP ecosystem. For practitioners, that means you can carry knowledge of processes, supervision, and OTP application design between them—but you still need to learn each language’s idioms, tools, and release requirements. Start with the shared runtime model, then check language-specific workflows and version compatibility before building or deploying a mixed-language system.
What Erlang and Elixir share—and what they do not
BEAM is the virtual machine at the center of both environments. OTP supplies conventions, behaviours, libraries, and system-design tools used to build long-running applications on that runtime. The shared foundation makes it practical for an Elixir application to use Erlang standard-library functionality and third-party Erlang packages.

That shared foundation does not make the languages interchangeable. Erlang and Elixir have different syntax, standard applications, and developer workflows. A team still needs to account for language-specific code, build and dependency tools, and the compatibility of every component in its release.

| Area | Shared ground | What to learn separately |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime and concurrency | Both run in the BEAM ecosystem and use processes. | How each language expresses code and how a particular application organizes its processes. |
| OTP design | OTP behaviours, supervisors, and application-design concepts provide common architectural vocabulary. | How a given project implements and configures those conventions in its language and toolchain. |
| Libraries | Elixir can use Erlang standard-library functionality and third-party Erlang packages. | Whether a particular dependency builds, integrates, and ships with the versions and release setup your project uses. |
| Development workflow | Both draw on the BEAM ecosystem’s libraries and system concepts. | Elixir’s Mix-centered workflow and its documented standard applications differ from Erlang’s tooling and documentation path. |
How OTP supervision shapes a running system
Erlang/OTP System Documentation calls supervision trees a basic concept in Erlang/OTP. In a supervision tree, workers perform computations and supervisors monitor workers; a supervisor can restart a worker when something goes wrong. Organizing processes hierarchically gives teams a common way to structure and manage fault-tolerant applications.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OTP also offers standard behaviours for recurring roles. The Erlang/OTP documentation names gen_server for client-server behaviour, gen_statem for state machines, gen_event for event handling, and supervisor for building supervision trees. Using a familiar behaviour can make an application easier for teammates to read and extend. A custom structure may be appropriate in a specific case, but it can be harder for others to understand.
Design the failure boundary, not just the restart
A restart strategy is one part of fault handling, not a guarantee that the application cannot fail. Before deciding what should restart together, identify which process owns each piece of state, which failures can safely be retried, and what other work could be affected by a restart. Also decide how failures will be observed and what the application promises when a dependency or operation fails. OTP provides structures for managing processes; the application still has to define its own recovery and service guarantees.

What changes when you move between the languages
Language idioms
Expect to adjust to different syntax and coding conventions, including how code expresses pattern matching, data transformation, and error handling. Shared runtime concepts make it easier to discuss architecture across a team, but they do not remove the need to read and write each language idiomatically. When learning, focus on the code conventions used by the specific project rather than assuming that a concept transfers with identical syntax or practice.

Elixir documents its own standard applications, including the Elixir standard library, EEx, ExUnit, IEx, Logger, and Mix. Mix is Elixir’s build tool and part of its day-to-day project workflow; the other applications support tasks such as testing, interactive work, logging, and templates. Erlang/OTP documentation takes a broader system view, covering areas such as installation, language reference, system principles, OTP application design, efficiency, interoperability, and embedded systems.

For a practitioner coming from Erlang, the useful distinction is not that one workflow replaces the other: it is that Elixir projects have their own conventions and documented tools even while using the shared BEAM environment.
Using Erlang libraries from Elixir
Elixir can access Erlang standard-library features and third-party Erlang packages. This lets a team consider existing Erlang functionality without first rewriting it in Elixir. The existence of that interoperability does not establish that every package will work unchanged in every project.

Check a dependency before adopting it
- Compatibility: Verify the package against the Erlang/OTP and Elixir versions your project intends to use.
- Build integration: Confirm how the dependency is fetched, compiled, and included alongside the rest of the project.
- Runtime expectations: Check whether the library expects particular OTP applications, configuration, or process arrangements.
- Release and deployment: Verify that the dependency is present and usable in the packaged application, not only in a local development environment.
- Maintenance: Review the package’s release and support information before depending on it in production.
Mixed-language compilation, dependency management, cross-language versioning, and containerized release practices are recognized ecosystem tooling concerns. The Erlang Ecosystem Foundation’s Build and Packaging Working Group describes these as areas of work, not as a single universal solution. Treat packaging and deployment as project decisions to verify, rather than assuming that language interoperability resolves them automatically.

Which versions should you pair?
The Elixir stable documentation lists Elixir v1.20.4 and Erlang/OTP 27, 28, and 29 as supported versions. These version details can change: consult the compatibility table for the exact Elixir release you plan to install, then check the installation instructions for its Erlang prerequisite. The installation guidance lists Erlang/OTP 27.0 or later, but the compatibility table is the better reference for supported release combinations.

For a production project, record the chosen Elixir and OTP versions together and verify them across local development, CI, and release environments. Do not infer compatibility merely because two versions are available independently; the supported pairing is what matters.
A practical path through the documentation
- Orient yourself in Elixir: Use the official Getting Started material to learn the language and its basic project workflow.
- Learn the OTP model: Read the Erlang/OTP system principles and application-design material to understand processes, behaviours, and supervision trees.
- Build an Elixir application: Follow the official Mix and OTP material, and become familiar with the documented Elixir tools relevant to your work, such as ExUnit, IEx, and Logger.
- Check interoperability: When evaluating an Erlang library, verify its compatibility and how it fits into your build and release process.
- Confirm operations details: Use the version-specific documentation for supported combinations, installation, application design, and release decisions. A book can provide structured study, but it should not replace current version guidance.
Books and longer-form learning
For structured study, the official Elixir learning page describes Elixir in Action as covering Elixir and functional programming before moving into the Erlang VM, OTP, concurrency, fault tolerance, distributed systems, packaging, releases, and troubleshooting. It is presented as a route from language fundamentals toward production concerns.
The official Erlang documentation lists Programming Erlang: Software for a Concurrent World by Joe Armstrong, published in 2007, and states that a paper edition is available from Amazon and other bookstores. It also lists Learn You Some Erlang for Great Good!, Erlang Programming, Erlang and OTP in Action, and Designing for Scalability with Erlang/OTP. Books can help organize conceptual learning, but their editions and availability may change, and older material should not be used as the authority for current release compatibility.
