Enterprise LLMs can accept a large data dump without reliably using every relevant fact in it. The “context collapse” label is a useful way to describe this gap, not a standardized technical diagnosis: studies document position-sensitive evidence use, performance declines as inputs grow, and enterprise-specific problems such as noisy retrieval, conflicting facts, complex instructions, and sensitive information.
What does “context collapse” mean for enterprise LLMs?
A model’s context window describes how much input it can accept; it does not guarantee that the model will find, weigh, and apply every useful detail in that input. Putting more material into a prompt can increase the reasoning burden and expose the model to irrelevant, outdated, contradictory, or restricted information. The resulting failure may look like a missed fact, a partial answer, or a response that violates one requirement while satisfying others.

There is no single failure pattern shared by every model or deployment. The evidence instead points to several mechanisms that can combine in an enterprise workflow.
Why can a model miss information that is already in its context?
Relevant evidence can be harder to use in the middle
In “Lost in the Middle: How Language Models Use Long Contexts,” published in TACL in 2024, Nelson F. Liu and co-authors studied multi-document question answering and key-value retrieval. They found that performance could vary with the position of relevant information: it was often stronger when evidence appeared near the beginning or end, and weaker when the model needed evidence from the middle of a long input. This is a demonstrated reliability risk, not proof that every current model always ignores the middle.

For an enterprise prompt, adding documents around a supporting passage may therefore affect whether that passage informs the answer, even when the passage remains present.
Longer input can hurt even when retrieval is perfect
Du and co-authors’ “Context Length Alone Hurts LLM Performance Despite Perfect Retrieval,” in Findings of EMNLP 2025, tested five open- and closed-source models on math, question-answering, and coding tasks. They reported performance degradation of 13.9%–85% as input length increased, despite perfect retrieval and while the inputs remained within the models’ claimed context lengths. That range describes those experiments; it is not a forecast for every model, task, or production system.
The finding matters because better retrieval cannot necessarily remove every long-input problem. Even when the right evidence is supplied, the model may perform worse as the surrounding input grows.

Why do enterprise data and instructions make the problem harder?
Retrieved documents can be noisy, incomplete, or in conflict
In practice, an enterprise system may retrieve irrelevant passages, fail to retrieve a needed document, or surface sources that disagree. Chunking documents into smaller passages can also make it harder to retain global relationships. LongRAG’s authors discuss both sides of this trade-off: chunking can disrupt global context, while low-quality retrieval can add noise.
A larger context can thus contain more evidence and more reasons to misread it. The system must distinguish what is relevant, reconcile conflicting claims, and recognize when the available material does not establish an answer.
Meeting each requirement separately is not the same as completing the task
EnterpriseRAG, a 2026 benchmark from its authors, uses 983 expert-validated samples across six domains. Its tested models satisfied 80% of individual constraints, but only 26.8% of responses satisfied all requirements simultaneously. The benchmark introduces retrieval noise, knowledge gaps, factual conflicts, and complex instructions. Its results illustrate how component-level success can overstate whole-response reliability in that benchmark; they are not a measured failure rate for all enterprise deployments.

This distinction matters whenever a request combines several conditions—for example, answer from approved sources, include particular details, avoid unsupported claims, and follow a required format. A response that gets most of those right may still be unusable.
Some relevant information should not be shared
Information being available to an agent does not mean it is appropriate to pass into every answer or action. Microsoft Research’s 2026 CI-Work benchmark evaluates whether enterprise agents convey essential information while withholding sensitive context in dense retrieval settings. That makes access and information-flow decisions part of answer quality, not an afterthought to retrieval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should a system use a long context, retrieval, or both?
Long-context prompting and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) are approaches to compare for the work at hand, not universal rivals with one winner. LaRA is a benchmark study that explicitly compares RAG and long-context LLMs; its “No Silver Bullet” framing is a useful reason to test both against the task rather than assume one architecture is always superior.

| Approach | Where it can fit | Trade-off to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Supply a long context directly | Tasks that depend on broad document-level context or relationships across material. | More input does not ensure reliable use of every fact; evidence position and total length can affect performance. |
| Retrieve selected passages (RAG) | Tasks that can be answered from a smaller set of precise facts. | Retrieval can omit needed evidence or add noise, and chunking may lose global context. |
| Combine retrieval with broader context | Tasks needing both precise supporting details and some document-level or cross-document context. | The system still needs to control retrieval quality, conflicts, length, and what information may flow to the user or action. |
Whichever approach is used, the important question is whether the complete system delivers the right evidence, handles what is missing or contradictory, follows the full instruction set, and respects access constraints. Retrieval scores alone do not establish that the final response is reliable. Deployment-specific latency and cost also need to be measured locally; the cited studies do not establish universal thresholds for either.
How should teams test an enterprise LLM with large inputs?
Build an evaluation set from the actual work the system is expected to perform. The following checks translate the documented failure modes into a practical test plan; they are recommendations, not a production checklist validated by any one study.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Vary evidence position and input length. Keep the task and supporting evidence comparable while moving evidence between the beginning, middle, and end, then vary how much other material surrounds it.
- Test imperfect evidence conditions. Include irrelevant or noisy documents, missing evidence, and conflicting or outdated sources. Check whether the answer identifies uncertainty or disagreement rather than silently choosing a claim.
- Use complete, multi-part instructions. Score whether each requirement is met and whether the whole response meets all requirements at once. Do not treat component scores as a substitute for end-to-end success.
- Check evidence use and information flow. Verify that the response is supported by the correct material and that the system withholds information that should not be shared for that user or action.
- Test the deployed configuration. Record the model version, task, corpus, retrieval setup, and evaluation conditions with results so that a change in any of them can be interpreted.
Is there a safe context length or a universally better architecture?
The cited work does not establish one safe context-size cutoff for all systems. Results depend on the model, task, input, and system setup, so a context length that works for one workload should not be treated as a guarantee for another. Nor do the studies establish that RAG or long-context prompting is universally better. Teams need to measure end-to-end performance on representative tasks and state the conditions under which their results apply.
